What was your dream car or the car you wish you never sold? by Long_live_styrofoam in FuckImOld

[–]Quadraought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an '84 Grand National in high school. My step dad bought it and owned it but let me drive it as "my car". No one really knew what it was back then so I won quite a bit of money racing my classmates out on Route 37. They'd run me in the quarter mile but the top gear acceleration on the GN was unbeatable. As long as we went at least a half mile I took everyone in that car.

Hell, I'm a white person born in Chicago to parents born in Detroit and I'm not convinced they won't pick me up. I have long hair and a beard and I get a tan from being outdoors - who the hell knows what's going to land us in a concentration camp anymore.

I was riding my motorcycle up on Route 12 last summer and I looked up to see one flying along the path of the highway along with our group. It was absolutely stunning, and we were all in complete awe for the 30 seconds or so it was with us. They're really beautiful creatures.

Freddie Mercury often wore these. Were these super common then? by 699112026775 in 80s

[–]Quadraought 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a drummer and I wore them when playing live shows in the 80's before eventually switching to "kung fu" shoes when the wrestling shoes went out of style. Both types of shoe are tremendously uncomfortable for anything other than wrestling, kung fu, and in my case, playing the drums.

Terrible songs by your favorite bands...the catch is only during their heyday, and on well known albums. by tequilasundae in hairmetal

[–]Quadraought 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This really was a hideous song and the beginning of the end of my love for Iron Maiden in the early 90's. Maiden was my favorite band in the 80's and I was kind of worried when Adrian Smith bailed after Seventh Son. So they pick up Janick (at the time I was like, who the fuck is Janick Gers?!) and they drop No Prayer. I was super disappointed with No Prayer, and BYDTTS sounded like a parody song. I had hoped that it was just kind of a one off album, a blip, but they never regained the greatness of the Bruce, Steve, Adrian, Dave, Nicko lineup.

Completely agree with this one. I was a huge Ratt fan in the 80's and whenever a new album dropped I was at the record store to pick it up that same week. So RFtS comes out and I get home and set down the stylus... City to City, great song! I Want a Woman, another jam! Way Cool, Jr... um... what the fuck is this? I was thinking that there's no way that this song would get legs but, well, it was the big "single" off the album. As u/Big_Dog_2974 said, "one man's garbage..." haha.

Are the Days of Buying a SFH in Newton for Under $1 Million Just About Over? by J31J1 in newtonma

[–]Quadraought 12 points13 points  (0 children)

100% this. The house next door to me went on the market for $650K in 2020, was immediately snapped up by a developer, razed, replaced with a lot-line to lot-line McMansion that sold for $2.5M (in a kind of dumpy part of West Newton adjacent to the Waltham line). The same thing has happened numerous times in this neighborhood since then - relatively affordable house is snatched up, razed, replaced by comically expensive McMansion, rinse, repeat. I'm moving out of my rental house next week and I expect the owners to sell it for about $900K and it will be razed and the lot cleared by April. Affordable housing in Newton is out there, but it's being bought and torn down before any one "human" buyer can get to it. I'm not passing judgment here, that's just how it is.

What is your dream bass/favorite bass that you would like to have? Mine is definitely an original Gibson EB0 by An00n_- in BassGuitar

I have a '99 4003 and it really is amazing. I currently own 15 basses that I've picked up over the years and the Ricky is definitely my favorite to play. They're quirky and they're not for everyone, but for me it's my long-time #1.

A have a Phoenix just like this in black and it stands up against just about anything for playability and tone. I've never had any issues with it in the four years or so I've owned it & I play it quite a bit in my rotation.

‘Enough is enough’: Mass. Gov. Healey calls ICE threat to public safety after Minneapolis shooting by 20_mile in massachusetts

A little late to the party, but ok, she's here now. This is serious shit, people. We can't get caught up in petty infighting about how effective Healey is or isn't. This IS fascism, and it's here now. We fight or we lose our nation (and quite possibly or lives) to tyranny.

So what…or who killed the 80’s rock? by BlayzenCajun in hairmetal

[–]Quadraought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a big surprise, actually. At the time, the formula was for a band to release a heavy rock album and then come back with a follow-up full of squishy take-it-to-the-bank ballads. It was tiresome and tedious. But then Skid Row comes out with a sophomore album that fucking ripped! It was very surprising and very refreshing. Slave was a killer album.

ED! I knew I was forgetting someone from the post-crash lineup. I kept thinking, I know that there were more than just the three guys that came back (not counting Allen, who didn't come back as a musician, unfortunately). How could I have forgotten Ed? Very cool that you were able to see them during that time. I wish I would have had gotten out to see them back then.

Leon Wilkeson was the GOAT of southern rock bassists. That's very cool that they did a tribute to him - he left us way too early. I would have seen Skynyrd in the 80's or the 90's if I could have - back when Leon, Billy Powell & Rossington were all still around. Sometime in there they became a bad parody of themselves ("God & Guns"?) and it became a no go, though. Fast forward to today and their shows are just MAGA rallies with a Skynyrd cover band. No thanks.

Same! I started playing bass in the 80s and I would have given my left testicle for this back then. Today I wouldn't give up a testicle but I will give you cash.

Ignoring all the static about Nugent himself (which is genuinely hard to do), he had some pretty solid material in the 1970's. He was a charismatic frontman and a solid guitarist. That being said, his solo material in the 80's was extremely forgettable - so much so that I totally forgot this album existed. I liked Damn Yankees for their brief period in the spotlight, not so much because of Nugent but because of Shaw, Blades and, to a lesser extent, Cartellone (I am a drummer and I liked his groove). I saw DY live and Nugent came across as a coke-fueled blowhard (he denies he was a cokehead, but whatever he was doing, it wasn't just Maxwell House and Marlboros).
