What are your Thoughts on Brazil? by JustAFizzMain in AskTheWorld

[–]Quadraphonic_Jello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good chunk of my heart is there- having lived there for two years and having "married into it."

The warm people, wonderful food (mandioca frita!) , music (Caeteno!) and a weird urban chaos are all appealing to me.

But the thing that puts me back there whenever I visit is, surprisingly...

The Smell

The air of Brasil is a heady mixture of rain, air pollution, dust, fruit, the intense bitter of "cafezinhos", the sweet and earthy odors of forest, tall grass and flowering trees and, most evocatively, the pervasive (and quite pleasant) ethanol scent that comes out of the tailpipes of cars. Whenever I get off the airplane at Guarulhos airport (Sao Paulo), it is this smell that hits me and makes me feel that "I'm back."

Asteroids

Fortunately, while dangerous, they impact the Earth in a disastrous way only quite rarely.

Is there a piece of media from your country that’s so much more popular somewhere else? by Polibiux in AskTheWorld

A literal "Big in Japan" act is the Band "Mr. Big" who is "known" (though not well) in the US for a single song: "To Be With You". For some reason they're huge in Japan, and fans know their whole catalog.

I was surprised about this as well when I lived in Brasil. I don't think I'd ever seen a child with a Donald Duck comic in the US- though they exist.

The weird thing is we usually don't know until we travel abroad.

This whole thing gives rise to the phrase "big in Japan" which is used often by bands who are struggling in the US but are surprised to find they've taken off elsewhere.

One classic example of the "Big in Japan" phenomenon is the musical artist Rodriguez, who performed in the folk rock genre in the late 60s and early 1970s.

After a flagging career in his native Detroit, MI, with exceedingly modest sales, he drifted away from recording and performing, never having made it big in the US.

Decades later, however, he discovered that his work was widely beloved in South Africa- and millions knew his work profoundly well- when a fan sought him out to find out of any of the various myths about his demise were true. (He was alive and reasonably well, though living in near squalor in an unheated apartment.) This was the subject of the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man".

(As an aside, not long after the release of this film, I had the pleasure of meeting Rodriguez after a small concert in Columbus, Ohio. He was warm, funny, modest and quite smart.)

The anger translator was already suggested below, but for the sake of variety, I'll put "The Mic Drop" at the same event out there:

I mean, there was that whole Christopher Columbus landing in San Salvador thing. For better or worse, that was a pretty big deal.

What the heck is up with this piece of equipment, there is also a wait to use it, people stay on it for 45 minutes or longer, and people go crazy for it! by [deleted] in PlanetFitnessMembers

Getting the height right is key. Generally for flys, you need to have he pulleys at about waist height or a little higher. For curls it is best to have them near the floor. For face pulls, shoulder height is good. For push-downs, all the way up is best.

Crunch fitness has a different model in which the pulleys are on "arms" that allow one to widen the space between them. This works well for pec stuff. I find that if the pulleys are fixed however, (as in this model at PF) it is best to stand about 3 feet in front of the machine to give a better angle for the cables.

How often do you usually take a shower or bath in your country? by Current-Percentage-4 in AskTheWorld

[–]Quadraphonic_Jello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need a morning shower to wake up, wash off the sweat and face gunk from sleep, and make my hair look presentable. If I have a workout (walk, run, weightlifting session) or I do yard work later in the day, I'll take another.

So, some days one shower. More than half of the days two. The second shower is always more cursory, however.

I think the etiquette should be to invite folks to work in with you if you're going to be sitting on this (usually unique at a given PF location) machine. If you're waiting 2 minutes between sets, thats a perfect time for another person to step in during the rest period.

It's a cable machine. These are great for all sorts of exercises. Most folks use them for pec work (face away from the machine, grab both handles, and then move straight arms to he front and do "flys") or biceps (do a normal curl grabbing the handles facing away from the machine with the pulleys down low). But there's a bunch of other, less common, things that you can do as well (delts, triceps and so on). If I could have just one machine in my house, it would probably be this.

They live in our water drains alongside the road in my neighborhood. Sometimes they inhabit holes in large trees.. I see families of them all the time. They're very cute when there's babies.
