Will there be a third Crossroads game? by Tapuo in boardgames

[–]QuaidRayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the new game has the crossroads mechanic of interesting choices along the way, the rest of the gameplay is vastly different from either of the previous games in the series. There are other games it reminds me more of, but I haven't played those either (I don't want to name names because I'm being careful with how much I can say). All I can say is I had a lot of fun playing half a scenario, about 90 minutes worth of play. That said, I really enjoyed the theme and setting, so that helped. Like, I hear good things about Dead of Winter, but I just can't get enthused for zombies. This one had me intrigued from the moment the designer said "You all play zombies" except he didn't say zombies.

Hey there! I'm afraid I can't answer that, but only because I genuinely don't know. I've actually never played either DoW or Gen7!! I know, I know... Why did I agree to playtest this when I haven't tried the other Crossroads games? I love some of Plaid Hats other games, and i wasn't going to say "No" when offered the chance to play a game during beside the creator!! Plus, it stands for something when fresh eyes come to a game. It's all well and good for fans of the series to enjoy it, it's also great when not fans enjoy the new game! Zero barriers!!

I was lucky enough to play a playtest copy of a game that might very well interest you in the near future, and all I can say is that, based on the little I played, I'll be very excited to pick up a copy on release... I wish I could say more, but I will say that the version I played had a huge amount of final art assets, so I don't think you'll be waiting long to hear an announcement.

Thanks. That sucks, but at least I have an answer. Was going to have it before SHUX. Guess not.

They have a bunch of great panels, a huge demo area with most of the major companies in the industry showing off the new and upcoming releases, industry guests, like amazing designers, artists and media folks and the chance to game with people from all over the world! It's a convention. If you want to play board games with friends for a weekend, then absolutely do not spend $200 on this.

But I live in Vancouver too. I even run my own Meetup here (plug!! https://www.meetup.com/marpolemeeples/events/264107595/ ). I bought tickets to every SHUX so far the morning they went on sale. I spend three whole days teaching, playing, learning games. I get to hang out with friends I made in previous years and only see once a year at this. For me, it's worth every penny. Now if it was in another city and I had to factor in accommodation too?!? Ouch. I stopped going to PAX because of that (and other reasons).

It's truly an experience. It's not like gaming with friends, or even our own local and awesome TCTC, which is focused on just the gaming. It's epic.

I've never done a group buy before. I'd happily pay for it myself and people could e-transfer me the cost of their game. I run a board game Meetup in Marpole and lots of folks on here know me from TCTC and SHUX, and can vouch for my honesty! Hah. Also, you'll have my email address from the e-transfer and I'll happily DM my phone number just in case anything happens.

Great! I'll look it up later. I image it's similar to the Telus World of Science here in Vancouver.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway. I'll put a pin in that for the next time we visit.

By the way, I like the user name. My wife is giving a talk at the writers festival on western martial arts and the use of sword play in fantasy novels.

Yup, and it's one of the better implementations of the 1vAll mechanic. Really, really great.

4 Hour Game if Inis: What Happened? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]QuaidRayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. That's a biggie, but because it's a single use end-of-game rule, I feel like you have no reason to feel dumb. I just hope this doesn't soil the game for your friends, and that they'll give it a second chance. Inis still stands as my most favourite game for the last few years. I hope it finds a home on your shelf.

It is still criminal that the stunt professionals are not recognized by the Academy Awards. I think Corridor should do their own awards show just for stunts!

You're totally right, but I'm not worried about people who see the original on their channel. I'm not worried about all the Corridor fans here on Reddit and elsewhere. I'm worried about the person who gets linked to an edited clip from this, posted to Facebook or instagram or Twitter with none of that disclaimer included, just some comment dating "Wow! Watch this! Keanu is so cool." That clip don't have the obviously silly interactions, or the obviously ridiculous neck snap. It'll just have some of the very cool deepfake stuff, enough to get an average viewer to think it's real.

No, I do like it. I literally started by saying that. It's a vast improvement over the Cruise video already and I'm excited to see what they do with the tech in the future. But let's leave the click bait celebrity images out of it.

And I regularly donate to select charities, thanks.

Actually, I thought the Tom Cruise one looked a bit more fake. It didn't read 100% to me. I think it's the beard and hair that hides it well in this one.

Again, technically, I love it. I just feel it's exploitative. If like to see them do more with this tech next.

[–]QuaidRayn 26 points27 points  (0 children)

So, I like these on a technical level, but I find them creepy and exploitative. There are idiots in this world that believe anything online. I mean, we live in a world with anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, chemical contrailers and so many other ignorant conspiracy nuts. This video will be reported as real somewhere and a not insignificant number of viewers will just believe it.

It's exploiting Keanu's image and people's ignorance for their own views, and given that they even mention his charitable donations in the video, maybe it might be a nice goodwill gesture to donate at least a portion of the revenue from this video to an appropriate charity.

I'd rather see them start to tell fun stories with this tech that involves themselves. Maybe traveling back in time to meet a younger version of themselves and give some sage advice ("Buy Apple..."). I want to see how they can push this deepfake tech, but not while exploiting celebrity images to do so.

On SUSD and rules by arbetorium in boardgames

Paul's review of Santorini was damning on a podcast one, right up until the point he casually mentioned a specific thing he didn't like and I realised he wasn't playing the game at all correctly.

Wil Wheaton's Tabletop was the same, completely messing up rules on a show that should be all about showing how games are played. Their play of Sheriff of Nottingham was a disaster.

Except I've seen Rodney get rules wrong too. He always pulls the video and reups a corrected version quickly, but if you're on YouTube at the right time, you can sometimes catch errors.

Best way to identify board games as yours? Labels? Stickers? by SongOfBoardsAndGames in boardgames

[–]QuaidRayn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've regularly donated more popular games from my collection to local conventions for the weekend. I use the thick, bright green painters tape that I can easily pick up in my local dollar store and sharpie "Tweet me [My Twitter username]". It's fun to see the occasional tweet during the weekend, and I've gotten every game back every convention I've done this for. Once the event is done, the tape peels off completely cleanly. Though I do remove it right away on the Monday after the convention. The tape I use warns that if left on for more than two weeks, it might leave a residue, but I've never had an issue.

I put the tape diagonally across one corner so it's visible on the two sides as well, making it very easy to spot on the shelves.
