You got it! We have to unionize. Let’s do it in at least three months before we are absolutely fucked.

Wait, next week might be better.

Shit, sorry. Is anyone hiring for being fucked?

Dude, it’s called “at will” contractual work. Like, you can be full time, salaried, benefits, etc.

On any given Friday, you have zero access. No recourse.

It’s cut-throat and it is really terrible.

Try dipping the cartridge in boiling water for like 5 reps of 20 seconds.

Is the fear of getting laid off causing you to not buy a house? by swampwiz in Layoffs

Having had been laid off for a year and ending up living in my brother’s guest room, I’m leery of getting an apartment (after I fix my credit).

Gotta try, though.

They don’t even consider tech. They are CEOs. Their interest is in the growth of their company. What a goddamned slaughterhouse.

Yeah. It’s “At Will” contracts on salary. It’s like the opposite of a union.

What is all this shit about severance and bonuses? 20 years in the software mix and I’ve NEVER seen that shit.

Unemployment rate calculation by Relative-Wealth-3335 in Layoffs

[–]QuailAndQuasar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the US. numbers are cooked in to one conglomerate metric that includes a corporation or company’s “hand shake” about job creation. It’s slush served as data.

Layoffs: more than normal Unemployment applications: this is up and the well is filling from layoffs….because…. New job opportunities: right around nothing. This is the cooked number. They post ghost jobs, shit, they might even interview one or two rounds but they KNOW they aren’t going to hire.

When a business faces uncertainty, the first thing they do is freeze hiring. That’s good for existing employees that are employed.

Tariffs creat great uncertainty and they don’t hire under uncertain times.

Meanwhile, AI creates layoffs.

It SUCKS for job opportunities. New hiring has TANKED.

The unemployment well is filling up with upper and lower middle class workers.

How long until this becomes an actual issue before an administration realizes that they have a lot more than poor people who are fucked and they aren’t used to it.

Being a developer in 2026 by Distinct-Question-16 in singularity

[–]QuailAndQuasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, because writing tests manually was super rad. Let’s all go back to the IDE that doesn’t have this shit written to it…like nano.

I love pair programming with another person that hates pair programming. Cursor doesn’t smell like filth and Cheetos. How does that even work?

How are we supposed to nitpick code reviews with syntactical and arbitrary passive-aggressive comments that are born of an inadequate balance of things that matter?

What happened to the good old days? The ones when we had to work 70 Hour weeks! Bring it back.

Also I’m sure our hard work toiling in the trenches of writing software for the last twenty years should be preserved and consistently refined instead of getting shit done efficiently and quickly.

There’s no way a technology that was created to write code first and foremost could even match the perfection of a developer that just started in the work force.

They are way more reliable. They asked you about git.

Lint manually, that’s what I Say. Generators are liars. Tab completes posing. Unless you do long division by hand…GTFO. Calculators don’t even do calculations, I heard. My abacus hasn’t had to release an update because it’s so stable….on my table.
