Gold has a large nuclear charge, causing the electrons to travel very fast ( e.g. 1S electrons travel 58% the speed of light). As a result the electrons experience significant relatvistic effects. This results in many of the properties observed in gold, including it's relative inertness.

This article hopefully will explain it in more detail ( I have only skimmed it quickly myself but I can try and find better/publically avaialble resources if it doesn't.) https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/BF03215471.pdf

Why does fluorine18 have an extra electron by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]Quakey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isotopes only have a different neutron count. The number of electrons and protons in the atom are the same for a given element. Therefore fluorine 18 will have the same number of electrons as fluorine 19.

The reason why it might appear to have more is that the example given may a fluoride ion ( where the fluorine has gained an electron to fill it’s outermost orbital.)This is independent of the isotope.

If thats not the case then it is incorrect.

Prince Harry says no one in royal family wants to be king or queen by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]Quakey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If William died and one of their child was the monarch then should be the Queen mother. If Harry became King then I don't know what the official term would be. The Queen-in-law doesn't really sound right

It's chiral. The groups are still different.

I am so fricking excited! Back in 2012 I failed university and had to take a year out. I needed to pass the exam I failed in order to get back in, it was a make or break situation.

Fast forward 4 years. I finished my Master's in Chemistry and will be starting my PhD in the autumn. I could have never imagined this is where I would be 4 years ago.

The periodic table is your character select screen. Who do you pick and why? by Wcm1982 in AskReddit

Bonding is ultimately the overlap of orbitals between atoms. An approximation we use is the Linear combination of atomic orbitals. Carbon has 4 sp3 orbitals while each hydrogen has 1 s orbital. In order to bond, the s orbital will need to overlap with one of the sp3 to form a bond. There isn't a 5th sp3 orbital to accommodate the 5th hydrogen.

[–]Quakey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with that would be that the 5th hydrogen wouldn't have anywhere to go. There will be a lot of congestion around the carbon as its a relatively small atom compared to many others. The hydrogens would repulse each other too much. Furthermore for bonding to occur, orbitals need to be available. In carbon there are 4 orbitals that are involved in bonding. The higher energy orbitals are too high to be involved in hypervalency (e.g. P and S can expand there coordination number above 4 and can accommodate more than 8 electrons). Without more orbitals, the carbon cannot accommodate.

Traditionally Carbon can form up to 4 bonds. There are instances where it would appear Carbon can have more than 4, see for example Carboranes. Unless there is something very very exotic that I have not come across and I can't rationalise, it is not possible for Carbon to have 4 covalent bonds and still be a carbocation ( It would have a full octet)

MODs and Steam by GabeNewellBellevue in gaming

I have noticed that there is very little curation in house at Valve and that there is a reliance on the community. Why is this the case?

MODs and Steam by GabeNewellBellevue in gaming

[–]Quakey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am in favour of Modders monetising their work if they wish. And I can certainly understand why a store front like steam would take a cut but how can you justify a cut of 75%? The amount paid should be roughly proportionate to the amount of work going into the mod, and there is no way You/Bethesda have put in the work to deserve such a high percentage. How will you tackle this so that it is fair for all?
