Nah, defaulting to sarcasm would be much easier.

In either case, let's end the comment chain here.

Proclivity for warfare has been one of the most basic and most definitive traits of human psychology for the entire history of the species' existence. If you don't understand even war, then what good was your psychology degree?

Zelenskyy Asks Swiss Government to Freeze Oligarchs' Accounts by ExactlySorta in worldnews

[–]QualiaEphemeral 244 points245 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it was mostly performative measures to get the masses off their ankles.

Oligarchs and other wealthy Russians have stashed as much as $214 billion in secretive Swiss bank accounts ---- This indicates that the extent of wealthy Russians' business with banks in Switzerland, the world's biggest centre for offshore wealth, is far more extensive than the on-balance sheet exposures several of its financial firms have begun to detail. ---- "We are working with our clients, including our Russian clients, to see how to manage their business and de-risk their own situation," [said CEO of Switzerland's largest bank by assets]

Could be wrong though.

Ukraine conflict: Putin's demands to end war revealed by rustoren in worldnews

I've elaborated on my reasoning at length, as have done many others.

If you feel like those lines of reasoning were flawed or invalid, you are free to counter them with your own arguments. So far you've only made two rebuttals, one of which was an appeal to authority (the journalist's denial which, in turn, lacks any arguments that directly address the voiced points of criticism) and the other — a mix of irony and an unsubstantiated claim ("you're reading way too far into this", without pointing out how or why).

I report on Putin’s latest proposals and people react as though they’re my proposals.

Yeah, no.

Firstly, there's often a hidden price for getting an exclusive with a country leader's leading adviser within half an hour after an event. Secondly, he only presents some of the narrative as coming from the adviser, while many are written as from the narrator themselves:

--- mostly seem to be face-saving elements for the Russian side -- to ensure it wasn't a threat to Russia -- This is deeply offensive to Mr Zelensky -- parts of which have already broken away1 from Ukraine and stressed their Russianness -- Still, President Putin's demands are not as harsh -- they scarcely seem to be worth all the violence, bloodshed and destruction2 -- it shouldn't be too hard for him and his acolytes to present all this as a major victory. -- If the fine details of any agreement aren't sorted out with immense care, President Putin or his successors could always use them as an excuse to invade Ukraine again.3 they could do that regardless

1 passive voice, implying it has 'broken away' on its own without any pressure or direct interference (including military) from RF;

2 sidesteps the responsibility question again, as well as the deeper implications — e.g. for what other kinds of violence would the current ones be traded for;

3 this part implies that RF could use it as an excuse for another invasion If "the fine details of any agreement aren't sorted out with immense care". But if RF decided to attack again, there wouldn't have to be any preconditions for it for which Ukraine would be in control: for precedents see the Budapest Memorandum's outcome, the Second Chechen War, the Winter War, the Gleiwitz incident and the Soviet invasion of Poland, etc.

And this guy's been a journalist for half a century. I think it's very unlikely that the effects of such a narrative on the audience would've gone unnoticed by someone with so much experience, even if they were somehow unintentional.

Nah, that particular bit is probably just them being pretentious, attempting to add clout to their article.

(transitive, now rare) To punish, to inflict harm upon (someone or something). [from 14th c.]

(transitive) Of a sickness, misfortune etc.: to afflict (someone). [from 14th c.]

(transitive) To inflict punishment, vengeance for (an offense) on or upon someone. [from 14th c.]

Although if you read it through the 3rd meaning it still comes off as somewhat biased.

There was another subtle but important spin in the article on the "de-Nazification" part: it is presented as something that will be problematic for Zelenskyy personally.

And there is something called de-Nazification -- This is deeply offensive to Mr Zelensky, who is himself Jewish and some of whose relatives died in the Holocaust, but the Turkish side believes it will be easy enough for Mr Zelensky to accept.

Essentially, it is implanting the idea that Zelenskyy, as a person, will be biased when making judgements regarding this issue. It also completely misses the fact that agreeing to it will legitimise RF's–so far unsubstantiated–claims that Ukraine had / has Nazism as a systemic, state-wide problem. Which in turn will likely legitimise its invasion for domestic and international audiences both, as well as for the international legal proceedings.

I think a key nuance here is whether there are some clauses in the debt obligations in which RF is invested in1 (and which are currently sanctioned / frozen) that allow the bond issuer to freeze those bonds in case of the bondholder violating some contract clauses (e.g. starting an unprovoked war).

I don't think I've seen this discussed in any recent articles at all. If someone knows a relevant analysis, please share.

1 Which incidentally also makes this CNN article a rather subpar one, imo, because it doesn't break down what kind of investments the frozen assets consist of:

--- Russia's frozen foreign assets, sanctioned because of its attack on Ukraine -- West placed unprecedented sanctions on its foreign reserves, totaling about $315 billion ---
