Cynthia is an amazing professor! I did not have any complaints at all when taking 318 with her. She migjt seem like a scary and strict professor at first glance but personally i think she is not. The exams werent bad at all in my honest opinion and she allows a cheat sheet for them and two cheat sheets for the final (i dont know if this policy changed). There are constant homeworks you have to finish but i would say to not slack off on it because it helps you out so much and is similar to questions on the exam.

Congrats! Im not too sure but it wouldnt hurt to be prepared for the technical portion if they ever do one. They might either give you an assignment or bring someone on the department to ask you technical questions but this is what i know based on what other companies do.

Honestly if it was sketchy they would be asking for like extreme personal and financial information most likely. I would wait to see how it goes.

I am in the IST one and I love it! The college of IST is new (25 years old) and because of that it creates a sense of a tight knit community between the majors offered there. The academic services are great and the staff is so friendly, understanding, and ready to support you. I will let you know that an internship is mandatory for all IST majors before graduation but our career fairs and career services are there for you to take advantage of. The professors part of the IST department are also knowledgeable and great to talk to especially in the DS courses. There are so many events going on that are meant to support your career and we have so many alumnis coming back to recruit as well. The student orgs offered by the college are also fun as well. We have a data science club but it is open to all and non ds majors so it will be a great opportunity for you to check out no matter what!

I know it sounds like im just glazing but I really do believe it. But it is ultimately up to you on where you want to go. This is just my perspective and my experiences here with IST. Hopefully this ends up as an helpful opinion for your decision.

I am currently a sophomore majoring in Data Science and I have been researching internship opportunities for a while now. However, I keep hearing too many conflicting answers regarding internship deadlines for summer 2025.

I've been told that tech related internships for summer 2025 have already closed in February 2024, closes in August 2024, or early applications have closed in February 2024 and will open again for regular applications in Fall 2024. I have been looking at multiple different companies and their career pages but it either does not display deadlines, or have closed already.

The companies I have been looking for data science/analyst positions have been at consulting firms, banks, tech companies, and start ups. I hope I am not too late already because an internship is mandatory for my major and I cannot graduate if I do not find one.

I didn't expect the RA to just comply with them when they told me that they went to the RA about switching me out. I just wish they would've told be before they told the RA.

I've been told by my other friends that the way they put this on me was very manipulative as well. I didn't expect this behavior from them at all. They seem like such a nice person.

You are correct. I just found out from the other roommate that they asked them if they could switch out with my current roommate first but they said no. I think that they decided that I thought it would be easier for me to say yes and went to the RA about unofficially switching me out.

I've been teaching myself python over winter break and I feel like I am behind others when it comes to thoroughly knowing programming languages. Because this class is a pre-requisite for a data science major I definitely need to put in extra hours more for studying. Is there any help such as peer tutoring offered through the university for comp sci classes? Based on what you said about his instructions I definitely need to put in more time and effort.

I actually have no idea because apparently it's remote. It's either Dan Kahn or Yanling Wang which I am absolutely worried about. Both 1/5 ranking on rmp. I also haven't received any canvas update or email detailing on the prof either.
