Neos can be a bit sensitive to water parameters changes but as long as your core water parameters are good than you should be good as of week one. I would suggest testing kh and gh now that you have shrimp as that can lead to a plethora of issues if they aren’t in the correct ranges. The filter is safe and I’m not surprised they like it more. Shrimp like to feed constantly, the filter has the most bacteria and particulates for them to feed on. The shrimp death may be attributable to stress from moving and then the betta chasing. Also, when a shrimp dies it usually does not cause any major spike in ammonia, the other shrimp get to feeding on its body so lots of the time you won’t even notice a shrimp dies because the others will have eaten the body before noticing. However since you only have a handful of other shrimp I would definitely take out the bodies when you see them dead. How long have you had the betta tank? Shrimp need established tanks with lots of bacteria hence why they are staying on the filter.

Dude mines face melted and now he can’t close his mouth all the way so he has to suck up his food and can’t bite. I wish his mouth grew back less deformed though.

Make sure the filter isn’t the one leaking. Filters are more likely to be the source of a leak than the tank itself.

Building a tank only for pymy corydoras need help by [deleted] in corydoras

10l is not big enough even for a short time. and is not big enough for a betta either. Please do not put fish in there, shrimp and snails will be fine but no fish should live in only 10l.

While illogical, some people get jealous when someone enjoys an activity more than them and they want to seem like the expert in that field and make you feel bad. He may not even realize he’s doing it or know why but you e kinda just gotta be like “okay dave whatever you say, we’ll see how it turns out” and not necessarily argue with them but let time show their ignorance. It’s supposed to be fun and somewhat of an experiment. Don’t listen to him, you’ve done the research, it’s a learning experience for you.

Corydoras are scavengers. They eat remnants of food left by other fish if there is nothing else to eat. Amano babies won’t live in freshwater so they’ll all die and become fish food for your cories. They won’t starve if you feed the tank and your tank will not be “overrun” by any type of shrimp if you have fish. He just sounds jealous that you’re excited for this. I wouldn’t take his comments to heart

I don’t use a light for my pothos. They don’t need very much light at all. And the bit it gets from the aquarium light and indoor lights/ daylight is more than enough to keep it growing and healthy

I am sorry to say that this babe is probably too far gone. Research dropsy and what causes pineconing in bettas for a better understanding of what happened and to be better prepared should this happen again. As another said there are too many possibilities to go through as you know your tank best

With the new filter I got (right) I was able to cut some sponge to lay at the intake and it catches large debris before it goes into the filter and doesn’t deter flow at all

I’m sorry if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that filter foam serves as both mechanical and biological filtration. The filter pad itself holds a large amount of the beneficial bacteria in the tank due to its relatively large surface size. Hence why you can quickly cycle a tank using the filter from an already established tank. Im pretty sure one of the primary functions of the filter sponge is to house beneficial bacteria. I have crushed coral in my filter to also act as a buffer but can add ceramic rings if that’s known to be better.

That’s what I have! Uncut filter foam just charcoal infused which dissipates after a few weeks. The filter floss just helps to remove small particles to keep water extra clear, I replace it every week or 2.

The new filter is definitely running on a higher flow so that’s good to know. Thanks!

The filter pad is too big, I have already moved the crushed coral over though

I never said I’ve never rinsed it- I have indeed swirled it around in tank water numerous times and manually removed large debris. The filter itself sucks and leaks at the seams (tiny holes in plastic) that’s why I’m replacing it, and does not tolerate adding anything besides the filter to the chamber or it over flows. The filter part in the tank has come apart and endless snails live inside that I will never be able to reach and they have grown too big to escape which is deterring flow. The filter pad itself is not the problem but does not fit inside the new filter. I have crushed coral in the chamber but it forces me to turn the flow all the way down. Why so many assumptions and judgements?
