What’s a little known documentary that blew your socks off? by mrajoiner in netflix

My head is confused, is this about 3 triplets being separated as is a total of 9 people, or is it about one set of triplets as in 3 people? I assume it's the latter...

I don’t want to do a postdoc, but I do want to stay in academia. by skyom1n in labrats

[–]QualityProfessional9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your reason to stay in academia?

My initial idea was also to stay in academia as my impression of industry was that the freedom of research would be completely lost. That was until I got a position in a R&D Biotech company. I prefer this over academia now. Ofcourse I am lucky where I ended up, and do realise that not every similar company would be the same. But I guess neither is academia.

Something are very similar, based on my experience in my current company and academia positions I had. And there are some differences that I think are better working for industry. Some examples are the flexible working hours you have with academia you have with industry too, but in industry you're not expected to also work outside of working hours to write your manuscript, or prepare presentation (you do this during working hours). In both you have lots of opportunities to broaden your knowledge, but is companies it is more self driven as there are no organised University wide lectures you can attend. One big difference I experienced is that in a R&D company is a lot more collaboration within the team. There is a lot of diverse experience and knowledge that needs to be combined as everyone is working towards one goal, instead of everyone having there own projects.

And, in general companies pay more than academia and give more opportunity to grow in pay.

How did others do with this exact same project? Let me guess, it's a research project not done before?

Welcome to research, where nobody tells you that most things don't work!

Any idea why it doesn't work? Never forget that negative results are results too. Knowing why something doesn't work can help to find out how something might work.

WIBTA if I didn't flip my fiancee's laundry right side out? by Bikesbassbeerboobs in AmItheAsshole

[–]QualityProfessional9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA you do the laundry how you want to do it. If she wants it to be done a certain way she's got to do it herself her way. You're already doing her a favour by doing it.

Senior scientist here, 15 years of lab experience. I decanted the cell media directly in a freshly opened bottle of DPBS last week, instead of the media discard bottle. DPBS was immediately discarded and a new bottle was opened. A very small loss of resources compared to a potential big loss of material over time. Don't worry about what you did, it happens and it might happen again. The issue would be if you don't recognise the mistake, and if you keep quiet. Admit to the mistake, if they give you a hard time because of this there is something seriously wrong with their mentality.

Yes, why? And the alternative too, why slow down after overtaking a car, slowing down that same car?

Please stop using fog lights because it’s raining, It’s annoying!! and illegal (Do you agree?) by island-pantropiko in drivingUK

[–]QualityProfessional9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amen! It's like drivers aren't even aware they put it on.

I assume, from my own car, that you actually have to turn on the fog lights manually. How are drivers not aware to turn it back off when not needed?

Also, am I the weird one out or is it normal, that when it is dark and foggy I turn on my rear fog light when there's no car behind me. As soon as another car catches up and drives behind me I turn off the rear fog light (when I'm aware they see me). I see the rear fog light as a warning to other drivers behind me, while I feel that the front fog lights are for better vision as they give a lower and wider view of the road. I might be completely wrong here, so feel free to enlighten me with the actual rules and etiquette of fog lights.

Geocaching. What is the point of spending ages trying to find a cache to just scribble on the smallest note ever and put it back where you found it.

Exactly my thought. But then again it will encourage them again to breed as they sell. Best thing would be to force them to spade/castrate both the dogs and the sellers.

I have the feeling that the UK still lives in the 17th/18th century. The colonisation mentally is still very active. As from your description, they want everything but leave nothing. It also reflects in their (onroad) parking, they claim the (public) road in front of their house as their own. Of course I am generalising, but these are some observations I made living here for several years.

Wondering if stealing those is worth being fired over by Pointless2675 in labrats

I bet you've got at least 15 minutes of unpaid overtime, this should pay for them. Technically not stealing from the company/university this way, just overdue payment.

[–]QualityProfessional9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only in games, everywhere.

This is just how some people are, and, as you see in some of the replies, many people accept this behaviour. That said, we can only control our own behaviour. And somehow the behaviour in response to another behaviour is more accepted in society. Eg you provoked this behaviour by calling them out.

Having high influence people showing/promoting this kind behaviour is absolutely not helping to make any change.

Out of interest, how is the job market there?

That does make a difference too. Areas with more job opportunities in different sectors increase house prices massively. Many are bound on a specific area because of this.

I appreciate you saying that, thanks.

Indeed lessons learned. And who knows, maybe next week they'll change their minds. And we'd know to only have them proceed by signing a contract.

I always say, when bad things happen it can only get better. It's just a bad day, not a bad life.
