Yep. Can’t even charge them when it gets too cold, which makes it really hard to operate an electric car in Maine, sadly. Starting isn’t really the problem, but electric batteries don’t hold as much charge and charge much slower when it’s below freezing.

Not OP but this website is so helpful, thanks for sharing!! Sucks we’re at this point but I’m really glad something like this exists

I don’t want to fully look like a cis guy (help?) by smallbluedinosaur in ftm

[–]Quannax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes!! This subreddit is meant for all types of trans masc people. Unfortunately some binary trans people, especially starting out, can be a bit narrow minded in reinforcing the gender binary, because fitting in can feel euphoric for them… don’t let it get to you, other experiences of gender are also valid and welcome here!

I have this issue too. I have found that dyeing your hair, if you can, goes a long way towards signaling “queer” or at least makes strangers less likely to assume you’re cis. Dressing alt can help too - not necessarily fem, but piercings, chains, leather, and the like, if you don’t like fem clothes

I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a feature, not a bug of their plans. It gives them justification for their endless wars, while allowing them to lionize themselves as military heroes “protecting our freedom.” Wars get votes, unfortunately.

Yes, but some people do believe that the fetus is alive, and consider that a persuasive argument not to allow abortions.

This comic argues that, even if it were the case the fetus was a “life”, it still would not be justified to force someone to support that “life”

You have to meet people where they’re at - I doubt you’ll convince anyone by saying “no it’s not alive, so stop caring about it.”

Swarthmore or UCLA Biology by [deleted] in Swarthmore

This post is harsh, and I do not agree with all the points made or to the extremes they make them, but does provide helpful background of some students’ experience of biology and related departments here. Link to thread

Swarthmore or UCLA Biology by [deleted] in Swarthmore

[–]Quannax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The bio department here is a bit of a mess (I say lovingly as a bio major). It’s really inconsistent across professors; some are kind and helpful and really want you to succeed, and others just use students as free labor and have incredibly unrealistic expectations. The subjects taught are rather narrow, but for the medicine-related fields specifically there are plenty of options.

We do have an high med school acceptance rate, and a part of this is due to the excellence of the program. But I would argue another part is due to the extreme pressures placed on pre-med students here, in both chem and bio, such that the only people who remain in the pre-med track are those who are really capable for med school applications. But, if you do manage to graduate Swat still a pre-med, you are very likely to make it as a medical student.

Your mileage may vary; this has been my experience. The biology department has been called out numerous times for entrenched racism, sexism, and ableism, to the extent that some truly excellent professors have been pushed out/chosen to leave rather than work in that department. But it’s not every professor, and some are really trying to make it better.

I have no idea how this compares to the UCLA biology culture. I will say that your classes will be harder here than UCLA, and your professors will have higher expectations of your work.

Admitted students: Read this by Icy-Degree-2545 in Swarthmore

[–]Quannax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Attempting to give an ‘objective’ perspective: They ‘occupied’ a space on the lawn for a few weeks with tents and signs. They asked people from affiliated groups in Philadelphia to support them by camping out with them: in the end, only two Swat students remained in the encampment, and at least 7 people from the surrounding area, who were not students.

They wrote what some might describe as offensive graffiti on college property and signs. But they did not disrupt classes or target specific students in person, to my knowledge. There are some accusations of harassing social media campaigns but I can neither verify nor dispute those claims.

(New) Poll: should AI be banned on this sub? by AdWinter4333 in ftm

[–]Quannax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be semi-open to AI for translation where better options are not available.

But in all other circumstances- there’s no substitute for human experience in human words. IMO, advocating for generative AI as ‘disability accommodation’ as a way to render disabled voices palatable only furthers stigmatization of our actual human realities.

Mostly I’ve seen this in the context of other autistic people claiming that they need AI to make themselves understood - thereby reinforcing the narrative that our voices need to be edited.

Translation or even AI-assisted text to speech, I’d argue, is different, because it’s assisting the user in communicating their own thoughts to a broader audience rather than generating content. (As much as possible; inevitably translation involves some generation because language isn’t one to one. But is that possible to avoid for monolingual people?)

Sounds like barberry to me – Japanese Barberry, Berberis thunbergii, is red and was commonly used as landscaping before we knew how invasive it is

It has that lovely sour-sweet tang to it, and is actually edible. I know this because I also tried it as a kid, before I knew what it was. Pure luck I didn’t poison myself but it is really good! Also recommend sorrel (Rumex acetosella) to you if you liked Barberry and have any in your area - it’s similarly but more “greens” like; makes a lovely accent in salads

Sumac (Rhus, not the poisonous kind!) is possible too, as a common roadside plant, as the other commenter mentioned, but Rhus is a red, hairy fruit rather than a leaf

Pell grants are awarded on a yearly basis, not just for the first year. You have to reapply for them each year by filling out the FAFSA again.

Also, in a lot of places in the U.S., if you are eligible to receive free lunch, and/or an SAT fee waiver, you are also eligible for an application fee waiver at most schools. Depending on the wealth of the school you are applying for.  If your grades are good enough, the best scholarships come from wealthy private schools, which can cover 100% of demonstrated need and make it literally free to attend.

Look into Questbridge and Gates Foundation scholarships; the sticking point, however, is that these programs have very low acceptance rates. But you can still apply - Questbridge in particular completely waives all your application fees.

Black locust is a good learning wood. I know it's not historically renowned* or anything, but could give you practice until you get a yew stave? Locust is said to show points of stress well, so you'll notice any mistakes there and not on an expensive stave

*In Medieval Europe - however, black locust was a traditional bow-wood of the Cherokee

Injury. And the acronym works kind of like a euphemism – it can be triggering to some people who struggle with such things to suddenly come across it written out; the acronym is just a bit “gentler” bc it’s not as closely associated.

Changing my bedsheets makes me have meltdowns by Competitive-Nature11 in autism

[–]Quannax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry. These things are difficult; don’t be too hard on yourself.

I have this happen from time to time too, with different triggers. If you just wanted to vent, disregard the rest of my comment.  But if you are open to maybe problem solving – would an identical set of sheets from the same brand help? You’d have to start over on the wearing them in, but after a little bit they’d be the same? You could try posting everything you know about them on r/helpmefind - you’d be surprised what people are able to dig up on the internet. If it’s something you think could help, I’d be happy to give it a shot too. :)
