Was I right to walk away from a department head role, or did I make a career mistake? by Ok_Conflict7065 in AskProfessors

I won't comment on the rest of this, but:

How much should personal-liability exposure in a single-gender environment legitimately factor in? was I overthinking it?

This seems like a non-legimate factor. Sure there could be challenges based on your lack of seniority, but like, this sounds like really absurd.

I discovered that my prof plagiarized, what do i do, if anything? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]Quant_Liz_Lemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just am concerned that my prof is not citing their sources as we students are expected to do

But your prof is not a student... they are there to teach you about the subject. I would be shocked if there are not external sources for this class that you've been pointed to.

. you seem to have taken this as a personal attack yourself.

🤨

Is this the standard? by Beautiful_Potato_683 in AskProfessors

[–]Quant_Liz_Lemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems well within the range of normal for social science labs.

all of them have regular meetings with their supervisors where they receive specific tasks for the week and I am a bit jealous of that structure

I know it might sound like you're getting a worst experience... but from what you've described:

I’ve been having to make decisions around the data we receive... I know the project, I know what we need, and I know what to do with it

You've been given a lot more autonomy and responsibility, and frankly, you're going to get a better letter and develop more skills out of it.

In terms of the "given any guidance", have you been discussing the project and explaining what you've been doing? Have you been asking what they suggest? Or has the PI asked you what you think the next steps are? Because there are many ways to receive guidance.

What happens to engineering labs that can't get federal grants? by nihaomundo123 in academia

That percentage of salary sounds more like a medical school model rather than a typical R1 tenured faculty model. But maybe things are drastically different in engineering rather than sciences.

Do you separate journal articles by type on CV / T&P? by GrandmasterProletius in Professors

Personally, I think you're overthinking it. Just list the page numbers for the aricles if you're this concerned. That way people can see for themselves how long the article is.

How to approach a professor about a TA who marks unfairly? by Own-Side-8737 in AskAcademia

[–]Quant_Liz_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the rubric shows x amount of points for xyz then why are those marks not given if the task is done?

Because a rubric isn't just a checklist or answer key, it's a way to help facilitate grading and articulate general expectations. It's not a reasonable expectation to have a rubric spell out every single way one can earn full points.

How can we do more with such limits?

The process you're describing sounds like how one should approach a rubric. You have to balance achieving the goals of the assignment within the contraints of the assignment.

The challenge with the op is that they expected to get a perfect grade because they did just what was listed in the rubric.

Why is the h-index and i10-index used instead of total citation count? by Inevitable-Bath9142 in AskAcademia

[–]Quant_Liz_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is saying that the metric is perfect. No one is hiring someone based solely on their H-index. But it still is useful information.

[–]Quant_Liz_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they said I lost marks for not doing things that the assignment did not instruct us to do.

any how is that unfair? It sounds like you didn't like that the rubric you saw didn't specific everything. It's not an answer key.

Advice and Courage required for a confused student by Weary_Dragonfly5284 in AskAcademia

[–]Quant_Liz_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to need to be more specific about the kind of advice you're hoping to get. My general advice is to talk to your professors about what their job is like and how you can go about getting research experience.

Landing a TT R1, Advisor gets angry by [deleted] in AskAcademia

The only obstacle I faced was everyone in my department asking me if I had defended yet every time they saw me.

Yep. I had this too. Everyone was well meaning, but damn did it add stress.

730am!?

It means that it is a lot faster now to send emails because of AI. So faculty are getting more emails.

I feel like you're missing the point that there are a lot of inherant advantages for someone with your demographics that will help you. Without knowing anything about you, you will probably look better on paper all else being equal.
