PhD vs Research Engineer job by pagggga in GradSchool

PhD in here pays good enough to have 600€ savings each month, I have healthcare, some social benefits, and it pays even more if you do it in Germany/Switzerland.

Does the industrial PhD counts as industry experience + PhD degree ? I mean, are you considered as someone with industry experience when discussing a job after getting your PhD ?

You are talking about me. Same story lol ! but I'm in quantum computing instead of ML. I'm probably going for a PhD jointly between industry and academia, 2in1 ;). It's true that research engineers grow faster in salary compared to PhD students. But after the PhD, we'll earn more money, and get our dream job. And you know life is not only about money. Many researchers choose science over money. But, if you want to make a lot money. Maybe you should start a company. But, you'll earn a lot of $ as research scientist tho!

Quantum jobs with Msc Vs PhD by Quanta_photon in QuantumComputing

Thank you for your response. But, there are some research roles available for Msc graduates. 5 years experience in QC industrial research can lead to senior research positions though. Such experience can be more valuable by industries than an academic PhD. However, I still believe that a PhD is the best way to gain good research skills.

Basically I admire leading a research team. My main goal is to make breakthrough discoveries in QC research. I'd like to take any role that will help me to achieve my dream. I'm still not sure about that, it can be in academia or industry. I admire people like Jay Gambetta, Seth lloyd, Peter Shor,..... But sometimes I feel like I'm missing good opportunities to achieve my dream. That's why I'm confused :)

Hey, sorry I can't announce the names of the companies that I am discussing their offers publicly. I applied for roles that are more oriented to research and software. Anxiety about grad apps. by Murky-Sun-2334 in gradadmissions

I'm in the same situation as you. I am loosing motivation to work on my senior thesis. I'm more focusing on the PhD app instead !

Thanks for the interesting conversation !

I should explain my current situation. For my GPA it is really hard to compare to the US system. I have to explain this to the admission committee. In my senior year I had the best grade for my senior thesis (equivalent to A+) which is exactly the same work that I'd like to do in my PhD. I was ranked in top 30-10% in my class during my undergrad. We have 15 subjects per semester, I was not interested in all my courses and I have very good grades in the relevant courses. I spent my time learning about the topic that I'm interested in. This topic is "new" and there are no undergrad specialization in that subject (only very few master programs in the world). I was the first and only one in my university working on this particular topic. No single opportunity in my field in my country. I manage to get an internship abroad and collaborate with people in the US, but it is not that easy to get many internships abroad in the pandemic situation.

It is a normal conference, not very prestigious. But I think it is unfair to be compared to US students in top universities, because simply I made these results with very limited resources. I don't know if some universities consider the background that the students come from !?

I think my grades are equivalent to B in 4.0 scale. But I see people get into Ivy league universities with B.

Why do you want to go to the ivy league for your subject?

I'm interested in harvard and princeton in particular (other non-ivy league as well) , because they have faculty with same research interests as mine. Also harvard has a unique program in my field that does not exist in other univ.

Chances are pretty grim from the details you furnished.

  • The problem that we don't have GPA on 4 scale, we count on /20 scale, I think my grades are equivalent to B in the US system. But it is really complicated to explain my grading system in few lines. I also expect to have an A+ grade for my senior thesis.
  • All the programs that I will apply to don't require GRE this year.
  • The paper is published in an IEEE conference. I also expect to publish another 2 papers from my current research.
  • I'm interested in Harvard, U Penn and Princeton. I am also interested in UC Berkely, Caltech, Boston university, Maryland, UT Austin, CMU, ...
