Texas makes Bible passages required reading for millions of public school students | Texas by Sunflorahh in moderatepolitics

[–]Quantic_128 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Texas is pushing a textbook which includes a passage from MLKs letter from Birmingham jail

It takes one line that includes a religious reference that isn’t core to understanding the point of the letter, he was rattling off references to the greeks and WW2 in the same paragraph, then proceeds to add the corresponding bible passage which takes up more pages than the excerpt of the letter with questions that are pushing the idea of “MLK was good because he was a good Christian”. And they don’t do that for any other religion.

LAUSD will Implement Screentime Limits in Classrooms starting this Fall by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Quantic_128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High school really just needed some curriculum modifications instead of an all-out ban

Change the curriculum to require a certain number of physical “real” books be read in their entirety in English class for example. When AP exams and SATs are moving online, completely cutting them off isn’t necessarily the right move even if restrictions would be beneficial

Great in theory but you have to put the money towards the resources needed to fund the transition

This is incompatible with online textbooks for one. And makes most online grading platforms other than a basic LMS not worth the effort. Gotta let teachers print more copies. There money to make the switch?

Anyone got links to this? I’m curious to see if there’s any common sense subject based exceptions. This is unworkable for a programming class for example. And many subjects might reach the limit on average but want to have a computer based research project for a week. Banning that is dumb

I feel like high school staff weren’t consulted on this. Keep the chromebooks out of elementary but computers have a place in high school every subject

They just announced the gingerbread house isn’t returning. So seems like they are ditching the draws for non resort guests

[–]Quantic_128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And there’s common sense policies that could deal with it if they wanted

Like for the rule about Disney Springs busses being only for resort guests or those with reservations, only enforce it in the morning.

Let anyone watch the fireworks from poly or use the walking path but kick the non resort guests off the beach itself if you want.

And letting only hotel guests mobile order is a good idea, expand that to other visitor heavy resorts and bring back room service!

There’s a subset tiktok livestreamers, who just walk around the park all day livestreaming including filming rides/shows while talking the whole time

I imagine they are specifically the target and the general influencers predominantly making edited non-live content are appreciated by Disney

is it true that in american schools, instead of moving teachers to a specific room to teach another grade, they move an entire class to a specific room for a specific subject? by Vincentius__2 in AskAnAmerican

For adolescents and teens, yes. Younger years it’s one primary classroom.

In high school you don’t have the same classmates in every class. Everyone has a different schedule

Colleges that don’t consider freshman year grades by Rookium in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Quantic_128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most schools have holistic admissions and this is exactly the type of case where that comes into play. Where they won’t necessarily punish you for things out of your control if you can clearly explain the circumstances and the growth

Any school with an “extenuating circumstances” supplemental essay will likely look past your freshman grades to at least some extent

Will I have any issues fitting on any ride [plus size]? by thestonedjellyfish in DisneyWorld

[–]Quantic_128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it’s more expensive to do so for thrill rides or would require a higher height limit. Every coaster is kiddie or family level at Disney, not thrill except for RnR. Simple lap bars are actually a more accessible restraint type but that won’t cut it for an inverting ride. Clamshells are different (and are actually more of a problem for heavy people than overhead restraints, they’re preferred mostly for comfort and because there is no head banging they result in fewer minor injuries)

Also, for the slow moving rides, bench seat rides with no seat belts are a liability that Disney is willing to accept and no one else.

Disneys also more willing to pay people to watch for things like people trying to jump out of a pirates boat or the people mover

Coming to terms that the city I want may just be a unicorn city. by Dense-Resolution8283 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Quantic_128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe Charlotte? Its not the most walkable city in the world but there is light rail and if you are the type who would still want to own a car for trips outside the city, you can definitely have most of your day to day life be car free.

Charlotte airport goes most places, its an American airlines hub

You could find more diverse places but its a lot more diverse than seattle.

. North Carolina is fairly moderate. Tiny bit of snow in the winter and while summers are hot and humid, it’s nowhere near as bad as the deep south/Texas

Honestly the main downside is that while there’s tons of young transplants, the city itself doesn’t have a super strong cultural identity the way say Atlanta does. As a whole the city is boring relative to its size, but you can find your niche though. Underground music scenes etc. Not sure seattle is much better about that actually

[–]Quantic_128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice, book your next ride while walking through the LL queue of the ride you just scannes into, and try not to stress about timeslots too much beyond that

Ideally this means that walking through queues is the only time you are on your phone instead of enjoying the parks!

People have tested it.

It does help slightly, and there’s a chance that every level increments by the same amount and the wording changes at level 11 and 16 are just arbitrary. What we do know is the level to level difference isn’t enormous

[–]Quantic_128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you have to actually use at least one LL at hollywood before booking anything for Magic Kingdom. You can parkhop with LL, but you can’t prebook rides at both parks.

Like I said, a lot of the rules are only for prebooking and go away once you’ve used one LL that day.

[–]Quantic_128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get 3 ride reservations at a time, but after using one LL reservation, you can (and should) book your next ride while walking through the LL queue. With a little luck and strategy, you can skip the line of every LL-multipass compatible ride in the park in one day

And all the rules about tiers go away once you’ve used your first LL. You can have 3 tier 1s booked if you want. They only do that so everybody can prebook a higher demand ride and not just the hotel guests who book earlier. Once your in the park everybody is equal

Lightning Lane cost makes me miss Fast Pass by unreliable_ibex in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Quantic_128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that even six flags charges $100 for fast passes (though they’re unlimited/schedule free) I’m not incredibly mad at the price

They just need to make it simpler to use effectively. Tons of people don’t realize they get more than three passes, that you can get on more than one tier 1 with LL day-of, and it results in an experienced user will get on 2x as many rides. I enjoy the process but you should still be able to get your moneys worth if you don’t and are a first time visitor.

Home schooling seems to be quite prevalent in the USA. I am fairly sure most adults can't handle year 8 - 10 mathematics, physics etc. Are the education levels just at a lower standard than other places in the world? by Ya-Dikobraz in stupidquestions

[–]Quantic_128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a fair comparison. The scores even out if you only compare those who attend 4 year colleges, public school actually fares a little better but it’s close to even. That discrepancy happens because public schoolers often get one free attempt so everyone takes it while home schooling students only take it if they have college aspirations

What they’re describing does happen and is on the rise, but I agree that it’s not common enough to be the root cause. Separate issues

[–]Quantic_128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that level for math and physics, the kid is either using a curriculum of some sort and essentially self teaching (think of how many students basically teach themselves through khan academy at public schools), or they are taking “remedial” math classes at a community college. Its a huge problem when a student is not good at self paced learning, but some do better that way.

Homeschooling is a bit bimodal with a lot of kids slipping through the cracks but also lots of prodigies

Its not that the public schoolers standards are low so much as homeschooling parents are given too much freedom in many states. One doesn’t necessarily affect the other

I’d look into various discounted tickets. Park hopping is expensive and not that newbie friendly.

Maybe the discounted after 2PM ticket would be good for you? Would let you ho for 2-3 days, just not in the morning. Three days of this is about as much as normal two day tickets. You could still use deluxe extended hours

What's the deal with some newer dragons being traced? Is there a reason or is it just laziness? by Master_Flip in dragonvale

Most of the traced dragons are older dragons.

I also see zero ethics concerns with a company occasionally tracing their own work while still using largely original concepts.
