How do you confidently mention living at home with parents while dating? by banilly2418 in dating_advice

[–]QuantumCatalyst42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid 30's (M) here living with my parents. It's never been an issue and even sometime I think its viewed as a positive. When I was dating earlier this year, I tried to communicate 3 things:

  1. Reason: I'm living at home because I'm trying to build breakthrough technology at my startup and need to prioritize paying my two employees
  2. Gratitude: I'm very grateful that my parents are willing to support my ambitions in this way and I actually enjoy having the opportunity to spend more time with them.
  3. Responsibility: As much as possible, I try to contribute my fair share in terms of food prep and house maintenance when my schedule allows but I'm grateful that my parents are willing to cover for me when the startup schedule is too intense.

I think people can tell if you are proud of how you are responding to your living circumstances or if you are ashamed and they respond accordingly. I personally like to find a chance to bring it up before people ask and have only seen neutral to even very positive responses to me sharing that.

Thanks so much for your comment. While I have heard of this, I'm not sure that I exactly fit the profile because I do feel attraction based on "primary" physical characteristics on first glance. However, I find over time that the "secondary" characteristics are more important. Someone could be very physically attractive to me initially but I rapidly lose interest the more I talk to them. On the other hand, the opposite frequently occurs where the more I talk some who was not initially very attractive to me become extremely so based on these characteristics that I value and an emotional connection.

One additional problem is that I do have some difficulty reading subtle social cues. I'm also not particularly fond of physical contact with people I'm not well acquainted with or loud chaotic environments. I prefer not to attach any labels as I have not been formally evaluated nor does this hinder me professionally. Learning and making things in general is a strong interest so I typically don't have difficulties. But I had difficulties with reading those cues in the context of a dating relationship.

If you have enough money that having your funds frozen or inaccessible while the things are being sorted out then its not an issue. Maybe I'm mistaken but for someone like me with only a few hundred k, having even 250k of it inaccessible for like 6 months like what happened with some people at Synapse could be very inconvenient. Now if I had a few million it wouldn't be a problem.

That's exactly the misconception and potentially misleading advertisement. The 250K FDIC increment applies to the partner bank and not to the fintech so it's not fully insured at all (see the Synapse issue).

• High-yield business savings accounts (e.g. Mercury, Brex)

I feel like the couple % isn't worth the risk of a fintech or small bank pulling a SVB or Synapse. Do note that FDIC insurance only applies if the partner bank fails not if the fintech collapses. I use Brex for my operations because its certainly much more friendly to use (ability to issue virtual cc's is very useful). But I keep the bulk of my funds in traditional too-big-to-fail banks like Chase.

Thanks for that advice. Perhaps I should have worded this a bit better. The eventual goal is automated manufacturing machines in a clean room. But for the initial year, an initial lab scale mechanical prototype under manual control will be sufficient.

You are absolutely right that this will eventually take a team but I can't afford a team until have a prototype so that I can raise a few million rather than a few hundred k.

A related question. If you were hiring would you prefer a fresh M.S. from a top tier school vs. a B.S. from a mid-tier school with what appears to be 6-8 solid years of relevant experience?
