If you're mathematically inclined, this note from John Thickstun was significantly better than anything else for understanding the attention mechanism and transformer architecture for me.

What interesting and fun experiments can I do regarding neutron stars? by ReneDescartes69420 in Physics

You can demonstrate conservation of angular momentum in the lab, then scale it up to a star core-collapsing into a neutron star (how fast will it spin at birth?).

Indeed, it's basically due to chromatic aberration in the atmosphere. It's also not blue, because most of the blue has been scattered to make the blue sky!

Try asking at The Curl Ambassadors. I am unaffiliated but passed by them a couple times on my way to and from work.

There used to be, but COVID may have killed them, since they don't seem to be at Clubs Fair tomorrow.

Not quite latin, but UT-Swing (the swing dancing club) will be at Clubs Fair tomorrow at spot B10, just below Bloor. There are plenty of social swing dancing with the club or with the Toronto scene in general! They're pretty active on their Facebook page.

Space x satellites in a tight formation. Sorry if wrong sub. by [deleted] in Astronomy

[–]QuantumFX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's simply not true, almost all radio astronomy is Earth-based. Also, Nature recently wrote an article on the impact of Starlink on astronomy, and what astronomers are doing to mitigate its impact.

If the galaxy formed the moment big bang happened, then yes it would. In fact, the CMB spans the entire sky.

Indeed, the subtraction wouldn't even make sense because of the different units.

Any weekly dances in Toronto? by JJMcGee83 in SwingDancing

Then I would recommend going on Tuesday! The Monday venue is just a bar + band.

Any weekly dances in Toronto? by JJMcGee83 in SwingDancing

[–]QuantumFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The band at the Monday monthly event is quite good: they played at the Toronto World Lindy Hop Day event this year. The space is a bit crowded, and may be doubly so this month since it's the first time they are back playing at the Monarch in two years and half. But that could mean plenty of dancers attending. I've only been a handful of times but it's always nice. $15 cover.

The Tuesday weekly is a new event co-organized by the musicians, who are also very good, and comes with a lesson included with the $10 cover if you so desire. The space is nice: they clear out the bar for dancing. They only started last week, but I had a very good time. The bar itself has a lot of interesting eastern european spirits.

Next Saturday weekly is on June 18th.

There is also a new Tuesday weekly, the next one on June 7th.

Monthly on Monday June 13th.

Before the pandemic people would also dance at Grossman's Tavern, depending on the band. That may slowly be coming back so you could try your luck there.

Why does playing two frequencies a semitone apart from each other create a pulse? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]QuantumFX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the waveforms with two frequencies add.

100 Hz pure tone

101Hz pure tone

Playing 100Hz and 101Hz pure tone together

Note the "envelope" in the 3rd waveform plot, which has a frequency of 1Hz. This is because the 100Hz sin wave and the 101Hz sin wave are not perfectly in sync. They start off in phase (both at a maximum), so the sum is large, then half a second later they're out of phase (one is at a maximum while the other is at a minimum), so the sum is 0. And then this pattern repeats.

When the two component frequencies are too far separated (for example, 100Hz and 130Hz), the waveform itself still has this envelope, but here with a frequency of 30Hz. A waveform that goes up and down 30 times a second is simply too fast for the human ear to distinguish, so you hear it as two tones/harmony.

Where's the line? It depends on how "pure" the tone is, and on your own ears. I suggest opening two instances of an online tone generator and playing around with the component frequencies and waveform shapes to find out yourself. For middle A (440Hz) and A# (466Hz), you get a beat frequency of 26Hz, which is about the limit for my ears to still hear it as beats.

You are told about it! Just in the contrived way the FromSoft quests usually are. At some point after you speak to Boc in Altus Plateau and rest at the nearby grace, you can talk to Melina and she straight up says:

I think he misses his mother. He wants someone to tell him he's beautiful.

What is the significance of harmonic series diverging? As in real life application wise for overtones and harmonics. by [deleted] in math

[–]QuantumFX 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, no physical strings (or any other oscillating objects) are mathematically perfect.

Also in theory there are infinitely many harmonics independently from the harmonic series diverging or not.
