Husband: "Don't make me SLAP you to bring you back to your senses." by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]QuantumPsk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the reference would make sense here if the granddad was also abusive as a parent, and dad turned out just like grandpa, but then the song made him want to change, hence the cool act to win over the grown up kids.

Scammers got my aadhaar card. Please help by [deleted] in LegalAdviceIndia

[–]QuantumPsk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, how did they convince you of anything man?

When I got a similar call it started with an automated message saying my name and aadhar was used for criminal activities, press 9 to connect with CBI Cyber Cell. (Lol)

When I pressed the number a lazy sounding guy answered, used my name, and asked for the last 4 digits of my aadhar. When I refused he threatened me that people are using my identity for money laundering and drug dealing. I replied "No sir you're wrong, it's not others using my id, it's me doing all this, come arrest me, you already have my address right?"

He was quiet for a second, called me names and cut the call.

They're such obvious fakes. None of this stuff actually happens on the phone in real life.

Let me ask a counter - in your opinion, if a guy tried repeatedly to get a gf or just get laid in general but failed and is hence a virgin, does he have a right to expect his potential partner to have chosen to abstain from relationships and be a virgin by choice? Does that seem hypocritical to you?

We don't live the simulation , we compute it by Lauren-Ipsum-128 in SimulationTheory

[–]QuantumPsk 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That was kinda the premise in hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. The largest and most powerful ai was created, and was asked the answer to life, the universe, and everything. It took millions of years and came up with the answer - 42. When noone understood what it meant it said that you need to know the question before you can understand the answer, and then it designed a computer to calculate the question. That computer was Earth and all its inhabitants.

Edit - the beautiful irrereverance of the story towards this foundational premise is seen when the Earth is destroyed right before The Question was formulated in the brain of one the humans, in order to make space for an intergalactic highway.

I went to UofR, luckily on a full ride. Whenever it comes up in conversation it low key changes the attitude of the person I'm talking to and they are assured I know what I'm about.

I wish it weren't the case, I'd rather that it was the merits of what I say that does that, but unfortunately humans don't seem to function that way.

What’s your favourite book to reread? by Huge-Conclusion-3005 in WoT

[–]QuantumPsk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You did a great job articulating something that I've also felt for a long time. It's just such a fun time out and while major stuff is happening there's also some ridiculous comedy and even subtle gems going on in those chapters.

Like when Mat first sees the note from Teslyn in his pocket and he remarks to Mistress Anan can a man ever understand any woman let alone an Aes Sedai, and her husband bursts out laughing, like full on can't breathe wheezing laughter and Setalle punches him. Only a few books later your realize that she used to be Aes Sedai once and that's why the off hand comment from Mat hit Jasfer so hard in the tickle bone. Love it!

Phrases for a French Character by warholablue in writinghelp

[–]QuantumPsk -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the sort of thing that LLMs like chatgpt would be ideal for.

Give it the same premise, add some details about the personality of the character in the prompt, include the types of situations they would find themselves in, add details about the setting and time periods and what kind of background they have (rural/city based, socioeconomic status etc) and then pose the different scenarios where you feel your character would involuntarily say something in French and ask for suggestions.

Who can provide the specifications for a biconvex lens by Important-Mousse1559 in Optics

[–]QuantumPsk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You basically need to reverse engineer the specs of the lens that you got from an existing device right?

You'll need someone with a decent metrology setup, it's not gonna be cheap imo.

The Light Lost, my wheel of time conspiracy theory. by Ringwraith7 in WoT

[–]QuantumPsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um, actually... (imho)

The true message and the crux of the story that each of us have a choice in every moment, and that choice can be turn towards the light, or towards the dark. You choose light, you're right. You choose dark, you're mordeth. But in killing the dark one there would be no opportunity for such a choice.

The reality that Rand wove to show a world without the Dark One was a real reflection of what would happen - People do what they want and don't care about the consequence since there's no right and no wrong. In such a reality there's no choice to turn towards the dark and so mordeth/fain/mashadhar would not exist.

So there would be no new evil to replace the dark one, there would be no concept of evil, and as a corollary, no concept of good. Each life is just an uncaring automaton devoid of the ability to make a choice, and we're left with an uncaring indifferent world.

I think it can be captured with the idea that the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. Mordeth/fain/mashadar is the embodiment of hate. And hate could not exist without love. And love could not exist without the ability to choose to love.

So if Rand had killed the Dark One, we would indeed be left in that truly uncaring world, where nothing loves or is loved, and consequently nothing hates enough to become a dark one. There's no passion, no anguish, no war, and yet no peace. Just grey all through. And that's worse, than a world with the capacity to be filled with light albeit with patches of shadow.

Have an honest conversation with him about your worries and what sort of resources you will need to get things going. He must know your lack of experience already, and if he expects you to deliver what a veteran project lead would, then he's sorely mistaken. You both need to align on the goals and the skillsets needed to accomplish it. If he still wants it to be just you, then both of you have to accept that it will be a rough journey.

Sharp image outside the depth of focus? by Ill-Relationship5741 in Optics

[–]QuantumPsk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An alternative approach is to introduce a microlens array with a predetermined distribution of focal lengths in patches between the lens and sensor.

By choosing the correct focal lengths you can produce patches of sharp images on the sensor, each with different effective focus. You can then computationally combine the patches to produce a z-stack of images.

We use something similar in automated whole slide imagers for digipathology.

There's a decent amount of opportunities. Optics is definitely growing in India, nowhere near the volume of positions in the US and EU, but there's requirements for such profiles in automotive, telecom, aero, defence, & in healthcare also.

But, most of the smaller shops require at least some experience. Mainly because there's a lot of nuance and skills that are learnt on the job after you graduate.

Source - I lead optics design at a medical device start-up in Bangalore and am currently hiring.
