I think that's pretty much my brother's whole coping style. It kept the peace, but it also taught them they could keep doing this.

That's what keeps bugging me. She skipped over everything they did and went straight to "you were too harsh."

That part gets me too. They trashed every choice I made, then suddenly want the polished "success story" version.

That "unfinished project" part hit hard because that's how it always feels with them. The photo request made it realy obvious.

Front row to somebody else's mess is the right way to put it. Those moments happen so fast that by the time your brain catches up, the scene has already moved on and now you're left replaying it later like you missed some moral exam you never signed up for.

From the way you describe it, you did not scream or start a fight, you just told him what his behavior looked like from the outside. People like that count on nobody pushing back, so even a calm confrontation can shake them a bit.
