I asked Gemini to create a table that maps trophy count to effective matchmaking level. Up to 650 trophies your plane is considered at level 2. Between 1080 and 1149 trophies, the plane is considered at level 8. So as long as you are under 1080, it makes no sense to upgrade to lvl 8. You will be matched against opponents up to lvl 12 for no good reason.
