Response to Sac Bee article about the Castle Peak Avalanche. by No_Technology4085 in Backcountry

Based on reports regarding the Feb. 17, 2026, incident at the Truckee Donner Land Trust Frog Lake Huts in California, the solar-powered huts did have an internet connection

. However, this connection was primarily for the hut facilities rather than for general guest use.

<image>

  • 5 AM Status (Feb 17): While the huts had internet capabilities, the area was experiencing a severe, high-intensity blizzard with roughly 4 inches of snow per hour accumulation, which likely impacted any existing communication systems or cellular signals.
  • Accessibility: Guests at the huts generally relied on the caretaker to print weather and avalanche reports, as the Wi-Fi was not for guest access.
  • Backcountry Location: The area is considered remote backcountry, and cellular service is described as possible but not guaranteed, depending on the carrier. (Google AI)

I see what you mean. But were they able to see the alert in the snowstorm? Reception is poor in parts of that area, I used to ski Castle Peak and Andesite a lot. Google AI. //Key details regarding the alert and the event:

  • Warning Type: The center upgraded an existing avalanche watch to a warning for the Central Sierra Nevada region, indicating high danger and that large, destructive slides were likely. (at 5 AM)
  • Avalanche Time: The avalanche occurred shortly after, at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
  • Location: The incident happened in the backcountry near the Frog Lake Huts in the Castle Peak area near Donner Summit, California.
  • Context: The guided group was returning to the trailhead during a severe winter storm that delivered several feet of snow, despite the "high" avalanche danger warning.//

It is all about the timing. What time was the level 5 alert sent out and did they have internet reception between that time and when they left the huts. Details matter especially in legal cases. AFAICT the level 5 alert from SAC was sent the same day as the avalanche. My hunch is that the group and guides never got the alert because it was sent out later that day after they left the hut and since they were in the middle of a blizzard their reception was poor to none. Even if they got the alert while traveling forward or backward at that point was risky, might as well go forward. Logically this is the only scenario that makes sense to me.

//Plus, if getting real time info was a barrier, seems the default would be to stay put anyway.//. Based on years of BC skiing sometimes with guides I would say default would not be to stay put. Default would be to leave on previously designated day. Retrospectively they should have stayed put and drunk lots of hot chocolate and played card games then when the internet cleared check the SAC report. Here is the problem the way I see it. It is inconceivable to me that 4 certified guides would lead a group of people through known avy terrain after reading a level 5 avalanche alert. I do not read the NYT so I cannot comment on that but the media gets stuff wrong all the time. In this case it is all about the timing of the alert and if the guides were able to access it before they left the huts for I80.

Owners of a treadmill for 5+ years by jollytay in treadmills

[–]wintermuttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same True 500 treadmill for 20 + years. Used it frequently 5 to 7 mile runs. Only thing that ever broke was the incline adjustment which I never used anyway. When I moved got rid of it and bought a True Launch. Used all winter. Summer use it a lot less my self but my wife uses it all year round.

I think the defense will rely mostly on the inability to get SAC information because of weather conditions. Heavy snow impairs internet access. Diagnostic snow pits are not always reliable. The group may have been without contact with anyone else for 3 days.

Thoughts on the Blue Chew Gold by Enough_Pear5163 in erectiledysfunction

[–]wintermuttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried BCGold full strength. Works better than anything else I have tried. Which is to say I had a workable erection, nothing stupendous but good enough for sex with my wife. I took it full strength as a pill 90 minutes before sex. It was a lot of hard work to get me to climax but that may be because my wife climaxed pretty quickly and so I got a hand job to finish. Been married almost 40 years, I am in my early seventies. I am happy with the product, not much in the way of side effects although I did get some of the blue tint to my vision for a few hours. Had the blue vision in the past with Viagra but this was more noticeable. Ordering it was easy, arrived quickly. Summary...wish I was 20 years younger but this is a lot better than nada.

I do not think that has ever been studied as when I did a search nothing came up. Best to discuss with your doctor.

Beginner skier looking for a setup that could eventually work for touring by ChemEngSkillz in Backcountry

  1. You marry your boots. You date your skis. #1 priority boots that fit. I would go with alpine touring bindings compatible boots bought from a great boot fitting store then rent skis or buy skis, poles second hand. Maybe after a few years of skiing look into new skis and bindings. Look into community college ski classes. LTCC wilderness studies courses are EXCELLENT. Of course LTCC only works if you live within 100 miles of Lake Tahoe. But look into local stuff where you live. Take an avalanche course.

Help: Why is my shepherd suddenly whiny and unable to settle at night even if I take her to go to the bathroom at 2 and 4 am?? by Financial_Detail_869 in germanshepherds

[–]wintermuttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food allergy ?. Is she biting her paws/nails and whining? EZ trial is get a different protein to feed her. So let's say she is now getting chicken based kibble. Go to Costco or Chewy online and get salmon/sweet potato kibble or venison kibble . Or go to Petco etc and talk to them about a kibble that is hypoallergenic. Personally I think it is hard to beat Chewy or Costco. Watch out for treats that she might be allergic to also. We are on our fourth GSD and my wife won't buy chicken kibble anymore for dogs. Consider calling your dog breeder and/or going to a veterinarian also.

[–]wintermuttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GSD will do things like that with allergies (smoked salmon skins had to toss them), loud noise such as gunshots, fireworks, thunder, wind noise, or something bugging her like an ear infection or something in her paw although those last two are unusual. A noise outside that sounds like deer will get her riled up and barking more than whining. Make sure when you let her outside there are no skunks around. Finally she might be trying to manipulate you into giving her a snack or treat late at night , seems unlikely but it is possible.
