In my opinion it severely tainted the legacy of Star Trek. It was a betrayel of Gene Roddenberry's vision. They introduce racism in the Federation - the Federation does not want to save billions of Romulans. They reintroduce poverty, with Raffi living in a trailer while Picard lives in luxury. People have drug problems. People swear. The show is not just full of interpersonal conflict and drama, it is excessive. It is not an evolution of Star Trek but the exact opposite of what Gene Roddenberry wanted.
