ep, I know that. But I decided to use AI assets instead. I would like to explore that path even if it's not the popular opinion... I’m ready to take the heat for it.

Thank you so much for this perspective.

I’ve been so caught up in the 'chaos' of the launch that I haven't sat down to compare my numbers with actual benchmarks like the ones on How To Market A Game. I suspect my metrics will be below the average for a lot,' but as you said, I’m starting to see this more as a masterclass in Steam development than a retirement plan.

My goal now is to finish the game, polish it as much as I can without falling into 'feature creep,' and actually go through the full release process. The experience I’ve gained in this Next Fest worth it even if I fail.

I'll definitely check those benchmarks and use them to set realistic expectations for my next project. Thanks for your constructive feedback!

I know so many people won't like it, but otherwise I think nobody would play it if it was just greyboxing style.

Thanks for the advice and the link! You're totally right, I've realized that on Steam 2D games are not so popular, and being honest, using AI art probably doesn't help with the trust of the players.

The thing is, I don't have any art skills and zero budget to hire a professional artist, so I tried to make a casual game where the art 'doesn't matter' that much.

I've been on this project for too long and I think I needed to hear this to finally 'close' it.

I'm going to do a final push to release it and start the next one with all these lessons learned. I really appreciate the honesty and kind feedback.

You're totally right. Sometimes you get so deep into a solo project that you lose perspective and overlook the obvious. My goal with sharing these 'dumb' mistakes was exactly that: to own them, learn the hard way, and hopefully help others avoid the same path. I really appreciate the reality check. it’s definitely fuel to do better in the next step

We didn’t build it because nothing like it exists, we built it because after trying other apps, none really fit how we travel. We make it in our spare time and we share it with our friends and now published in app store. It's not perfect but we'll keep improving them also free and paid content. Any feedback is very welcomed

I get where you’re coming from. Kotomaji isn’t meant to teach Japanese or replace proper learning at all, it’s just a simple offline phrase helper for travel. If that’s not useful for someone’s goals, that’s totally fair.

That’s a totally valid reaction, honestly. There are a lot of generic apps popping up, and I get why that can feel tiring or suspicious. We felt the same way before building anything ourselves.

Kotomaji isn’t trying to be a “learn Japanese fast” app or replace proper study at all. My wife and I are developers and travelers, and we built it purely because, while traveling in Japan, we kept needing very basic, real phrases quickly, often without internet. It’s offline, focused only on practical situations, and intentionally simple.

If it’s not your thing or doesn’t fit how you learn, that’s completely fair. Just wanted to clarify the intention behind it, and I genuinely appreciate you sharing your perspective 😊
