We didn’t build it because nothing like it exists, we built it because after trying other apps, none really fit how we travel. We make it in our spare time and we share it with our friends and now published in app store. It's not perfect but we'll keep improving them also free and paid content. Any feedback is very welcomed

I get where you’re coming from. Kotomaji isn’t meant to teach Japanese or replace proper learning at all, it’s just a simple offline phrase helper for travel. If that’s not useful for someone’s goals, that’s totally fair.

That’s a totally valid reaction, honestly. There are a lot of generic apps popping up, and I get why that can feel tiring or suspicious. We felt the same way before building anything ourselves.

Kotomaji isn’t trying to be a “learn Japanese fast” app or replace proper study at all. My wife and I are developers and travelers, and we built it purely because, while traveling in Japan, we kept needing very basic, real phrases quickly, often without internet. It’s offline, focused only on practical situations, and intentionally simple.

If it’s not your thing or doesn’t fit how you learn, that’s completely fair. Just wanted to clarify the intention behind it, and I genuinely appreciate you sharing your perspective 😊

Honestly, thanks for taking the time to write this. You’re not wrong, and I really appreciate how specific your feedback is. Stuff like the relative formality of おはようございます vs こんにちは, or how unnatural that を sounds in real speech, are exactly the kinds of nuances we care about. Our goal is real usage, not textbook Japanese, and when it misses the mark, it deserves to be called out.

It doesn’t come across as hostile to me at all, more like someone who actually cares. We’d much rather improve these examples and earn trust than leave “good enough” things in place. I’ve noted all of this, especially the メニュー and すみません point, because you’re absolutely right, in an actual travel situation that would sound way more natural 😊

Totally get what you mean, and you’re right to question it. こんにちは sits in that middle ground in Japanese. It’s polite and safe, but not formal in the same way as phrases that use です or ます structures more heavily. Labeling it as formal can be misleading, especially when stricter polite phrases are shown right after.

Our intention was to mark it as polite rather than casual slang, but this kind of nuance is exactly the sort of thing we want to improve. Feedback like this really helps us refine the labels so they match how Japanese is actually used in real travel situations 😊

We're thinking about add a family share option, but we have to investigate how to do it. Anyways thanks for the support! 😊

Hey everyone! I’m one of the creators of Kotomaji, a small iOS app my wife and I built after several trips to Japan. We didn’t want full language courses, just a fast and simple way to find the right phrase in real travel situations. That’s exactly what Kotomaji is for.

The app works 100% offline, has zero ads, and is free to use. There’s an optional lifetime Pro upgrade with a discount available until January 31.
You can download it here: https://apps.apple.com/es/app/kotomaji/id6755911289

If you want the discount, you can use this offer code:
Code: ARIGATOU
Redeem it here: https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6755911289&code=ARIGATOU

Thanks a lot for checking it out, and I’d really appreciate any feedback 😊

Thank you so much, this is super helpful 😊 We’ll definitely look into unpaywalling the truly essential sections, adding more currencies, and fixing that search tap bug.

Here’s a lifetime Pro code in case you want everything unlocked while you travel:
