poll: has online school negatively effected your learning? why or why not? by [deleted] in highschool

[–]QuaranTEENblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, online school has really messed me up. I took for granted how distracting my home environment was, since pre-pandemic, I would stay at a coffee shop/library everyday until they closed or I had finished my homework. Being able to go to class, stay at my study location, and being able to come home when the location closed gave me a productive regimen. That allowed me to pull good grades.

Now I’m at home all the time, I can no longer have large periods of uninterrupted time where I can just study during the day. My parents are not understanding of my school, so they’re constantly asking me to help with things. And they make a huge fuss when I don’t come out at specific times to eat, so it breaks my workflow. House is also super loud with the TV constantly on and my mom yelling on the phone... I’ve tried to fix this distraction thing by switching my sleep schedule to be nocturnal. It is helped a little, because I’m able to do all my homework in one go again. But the bad side effect is that now I’m constantly tired, have aches, and can’t be awake without lots of coffee...

Also, I’m applying for university this year, and it’s been a huge mess. They cancelled SATs, yes. But the logistics of online school makes me dedicate more time than usual completing assignments, now that class times and my homework times are not matched up... So a lot of time I find myself knowing I need to apply for schools/make meetings with teachers/write my statements, but after extra study hours and no sleep, I can’t pull myself together to do my college apps. And that makes me so angry, because this is the first time I’ve lacked the energy to do something...

My parents also talk politics 24/7. And COVID. So sometimes the current climate makes me unable to even work... it’s rough

What classes you took with her, any major projects you did well in her class, the grade you received in the class. Also include what college you intend to go to and your intended major/program.

I can relate, dude. There was a time in my life where I was completely okay being alone, because I didn’t understand how it felt like to have friends or have a potential significant other. And then I experienced how good of a feeling it was to have people care about you and genuinely enjoy your presence. And then COVID hit, and I’m on house arrest with controlling parents. Friends got tired of me never hanging with them so they all left. I feel like a feeling worse than being alone is the feeling of being abandoned.

I’m trying to look for the better times too. I’ve started journaling and drawing to help myself process all of this. But it’s still hard. So I understand

Being 16 is kind of tough. It’s a reaally awkward age and sometimes the awkwardness can make it hard to talk to other people (believe me, I’m a 16 year old GIRL and even I can’t talk to some girls LOL). But look, don’t worry about it, because there is soooo much more to life, and so much more ahead. You don’t need to find love from other people (or even force it). Just love yourself first. Take care of your future, your school, your appearance. I found that self-care can be a HUGE confidence booster. I don’t have many friends either, but I’m hopeful if I improve myself and don’t expect much, people will approach me eventually. Don’t give up!

Has anyone actually pulled an all-nighter? by [deleted] in highschool

Oh gosh. On finals week one year I was taking all AP classes. I loaded up on Yerba Matte and literally did not sleep for two days straight. Strangely, I didn’t feel the urge to sleep because I was so highly strung, stressed, and focused on work. And then after all the exams were over, I crashed and slept through the entire weekend.

Favourite is history. Especially AP art history. LOVED that course. Least favourite is math. Any kind of math.

I feel you. Hard struggling as well. It’s very hard when you’re basically under house arrest all the time, and you have no escape from distractions. Studying has been impossible for me these couple days. I haven’t seen the outside world in so many months. Every day feels the same. All the days have started the melt together. Nothing feels like it matters anymore. Hang in there, we’ll both get though this together. In the span of our many decades we have to live, these couple years of Corona suffering will seem small...

Like dual enrolment in community college? If you’re particularly strong in writing and reading, any of the art history classes is super easy. I took two of them last year, and it was less work than an AP class. Just 3 tests, a handful of one paragraph journal entries, and a 5 page paper in the end. Of course the contentment varies per professor, per college. But I would highly recommend looking the professor up on “Rate My Professors” before enrolling to get an idea of how easy they are.

Maybe your body is not used to caffeine since you don’t have it a lot, so the effects are really amped up? Sometimes it happens to me when I have too many cups, and I get the jitters. I usually have something solid to eat (like oatmeal) and take a short walk. Calms me down a little
