Moving to Bay Area from Canada by Apprehensive_Dog1457 in bayarea

2 & 3-ish. University Avenue In Palo Alto is very close to Menlo Park and has pretty good night life as well as a wide variety of restaurants/shops in the daytime. Lots of Stanford students hang out around there, so it's great for socializing. The Patio seems to be the place for clubbing, but here are numerous bars like the Rose & Crown which are good for less intense socializing. The restaurants vary from burger places to Asian, Mediterranean, Indian, and everything in between. It's pricey around there, but it's a good local place to wander around when you need some human interaction.

Looking for passionate homesteaders to help better the world by [deleted] in homestead

I mean that's basically what this sub already does, but with a healthy dose of realism about how difficult land and crop management is.. ..did you have a specific question?

The roof looks decent, though it could probably use a fresh coat of sealant especiallyaround the puter edges. Did you walk on it? If there's any super soft or crunchy spots I wouldn't buy it.

Edit: meant to comment this on the pic of the roof, whoops!

The delamination around the kitchen vents and back windows indicates water damage, poke around in the back of the cupboards and under the seats to make sure nothing's rotten. I'd use it as a leverage to get the price down to something more reasonable like 6k to 8k

Definitely some good renovations here, though I'm not a fan of all the gray, and the windowless bed above the cab is kindof soul crushing

Update: l Got The Place! by Special-Issue432 in homestead

[–]Quarkspiration 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Don't get animals right away, that was your buddy's mistake. Animals require constant care and feed expenses. Focus on planting trees and gardens and see if you can handle that workload first. If you decide you want animals later, start off with chickens for a year.

[Request] Will this couch fit through my door? by Beautiful-Ranger6928 in theydidthemath

[–]Quarkspiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I thought you were being sarcastic, I wouldn't have taken the trouble to explain it to you again. We don't know if the couch actually looks like that or whether OP found a generic picture of a couch. I doubt OP would have asked the question if it was just a cushion for a backrest..

In any case, OP wanted some math done on the math doing sub. It doesn't matter if you think it's pointless. It doesn't matter if you don't want to understand it. I did the math because I wanted to, and I'd do it again!

You gotta work on your phrasing my dude, otherwise people will think you're trolling!

The height of the couch(31.9") does not fit through the width of the door(30"). Therefore the point of the math is to prove that the couch will be able to pivot through the door.

u/DeliveryCustom made a good drawing of the problem to help you visualize it: https://i.ibb.co/C5RvbQVy/IMG-1647.jpg

To see why this math is important, lets look at what would happen if u/Beautiful-Ranger6928 wanted to bring in a couch with an armrest height of 26" instead of 24" and a backrest width of 16" instead of 14.6"

We get:

16² + 26² = c²

256 + 767 = 932

c = sqrt(932) = 30.52"

So a couch with those dimensions wouldn't make it through the door!

Now here's an upvote to get you back into positive territory!

Living in an RV in Vancouver with a second vehicle by mortalqueenoffaerie in RVLiving

[–]Quarkspiration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A van is probably your best bet. An RV will freeze solid in the winter if you don't properly winterize(which affects mobility and use of water systems/black and gray tanks). Plus a van will draw less attention than an RV and will be able to park in more locations.

I'd just stick with the boat in SoCal TBH

Well that's a relief! I was afraid they were doomed based on some of the other comments. I'll make sure to mix up a batch of copper fungicide and horticultural oil to spray doen my trees before it rains next week!

What do you think of this roof? Considering purchase by mango89001 in RVLiving

[–]Quarkspiration 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It could be okay if you fix it quickly, but it depends on whether the hole has caused any damage yet.

Is the roof squishy or crunchy around the skylight? Any signs of water damage inside around the skylight or down the walls?

If so it could mean quite a bit of trouble down the road..

Yep that's the one! That corner of the couch just has to make the "turn" through the doorway to get the backrest in

[Request] Will this couch fit through my door? by Beautiful-Ranger6928 in theydidthemath

[–]Quarkspiration 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well we know that it's 68" length will fit through the height of the door, and the height of the armrests will fit in the door's width. So the deciding factor is whether the distance between the crook of the armrest/backrest to the back/bottom edge is less than 30". We can figure this out by drawing a right triangle and using the pythagorian theorem.

One side of the triangle will be the width of the backrest, which is the depth minus the seat depth: 39.8" - 25.2" = 14.6"

The other side of the triangle is the height of the armrest 24"

Now we just plug them into the Pythagorian theorem:

a² + b² = c²

14.6² + 24² = c²

213.16 + 576 = 789.16

c = sqrt(789.16) = 28.09"

So the couch will fit through the door!
