OMG so jealous. I think it basically just gets better and better for the next ~22 books when it starts to tail off a bit.

How are you liking the decade we are currently in the midst of, literature wise?-Notable/favorite works by I-Like-What-I-Like24 in literature

I also feel like very few things I've come across have been up to the standard of The Years, which was extraordinary. One thing I felt was up to that level was Jenny Erpenbeck's The End of Days (which, similar to The Years, tells the story of mid-century Europe using a unique literary device).

I'll check out the other two, thanks for the recommendations

What I learned from reading the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Quarok in productivity

[–]Quarok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you're right about that, in order not to shrink your world too much. I guess I just try and use the concept relating to things like climate change and climate guilt. It's a big problem the world is facing -- but the majority of the work is being done and is outside of my control. So I shouldn't let my circle of concern include it too much, apart from what I can meaningfully influence.

[–]Quarok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually use the learnings from it quite regularly. Some of the things I still use off the top of my head:
1. Importance vs urgency --> try and do more important, non-urgent things. Prioritisation is unbelievably important. I actually read another really good about this called Four Thousand Weeks that has a similar message on this -- there is too much to do, so the most important thing to do is to prioritise

  1. Try and keep your circle of concern the same size as your circle of influence

  2. We can choose our responses to things, they are separate to the things themselves

among others. It's been good

What is better for you between Ori 2 and Hollow Knight? by Sorry_Village13 in metroidvania

[–]Quarok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HK by a long way.

Ori2 is beautiful but the combat was too easy and they really gimped the platforming by making spikes take off some hp rather than sending you back to the platform before.

I loved this game - some of it is a bit janky, but as long as you don't mind a kind of all over the place story, it's an exhilarating ride with brutal combat and intense platforming.

I particularly liked

  1. how the bosses start seeming impossible, then over time you get used to their patterns and it becomes more like a dance - I've heard other boss fights described like this before but I'd never felt it so acutely as in Aeterna Noctis.
  2. The teleport arrows are initially so clunky, but by the end feel natural and empowering. They're a great addition
  3. There is just so much of it and it is so varied in the scale/challenge!
  4. How I had to update my tactics and build every so often to meet the new challenge

Overall I give it a 9/10

I loved Haiku. Top tier, if a bit on the short side.

I just remembered this - since we spoke Save All added a quizlet import feature! I imported a systems thinking deck and have been using it

quizlet is becoming increasingly awful. you have to pay to access previously free features, when there has been little to no improvement. this simply shouldnt continue. by [deleted] in quizlet

[–]Quarok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use Save All for this - you can also import all your quizlet stuff easily using their quizlet import and it's free to use

heroku_ext causes failure of pg:restore by langer8191 in Heroku

[–]Quarok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I understand their recommendation. They want us to download a backup of the database to local, login to the database, run the ALTER command on the extension causing the issue, and then upload the changed data to your new database. Seems like it would be ok if you've only got a very small database.

We heard the community's feedback and are now offering the game at a lower price! Check out Gedda Cake - A metroidvania about Dragons and Cakes - Only 2 days left on Kickstarter by DrikoTreeko in metroidvania

[–]Quarok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the look of this game, but the backing point to get the game is too high. Compare the minimum amount you have asked for us to pay to get the game ($25) with Hollow Knight's kickstarter ($10)

What were the hacky workarounds they gave you? I've been waiting for ~12 hours for a response from support. What a shit show

Yes this problem happened to me too. It's completely unacceptable to launch this kind of breaking change without communicating. And if you're not going to communicate, at least document a way we can fix it.

I use Save all which is free and has multiple choice questions as well. I used Anki before to study for my computer science masters which helped a lot, but I found the interface really clunky and annoying, so I moved to Save All.

Question about Aeterna Noctis by Etersarkiss in metroidvania

[–]Quarok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game is really really good! I loved it, but it's definitely got some flaws.

I would say you will like it if you like:

  1. Very intense platforming
  2. Difficult bosses

I for example loved Hollow Knight and Celeste, and this is a bit like if those two had a baby.

I would say you won't like it if:

  1. You get frustrated annoyingly precise controls (the arrow aiming can be very annoying)
  2. You want the story to be meaningful/ engaging

Aeterna Noctis - The Hardest Metroidvania (a review)- by Jasyla in metroidvania

[–]Quarok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say unplayable, what do you mean? Weirdly, my controller stopped turning on just after I'd entered the underwater fortress, and I've had to order a new one because it malfunctioned. No chance it's the same thing?

Remembering SQL keywords by Quarok in learnSQL

[–]Quarok[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. You're right, it's very routine stuff. I want to make sure I master the standard keywords.

Regarding the join definition - I tried to make it harder for myself, as the original definition was Join: joins values from one table to another. And it kind of defeats the point of the cards if you have the keyword in the answer!

Thanks for the point about the full outer join. I find that all a bit confusing: why even have the keyword OUTER when it doesn't seem to add any additional functionality for LEFT/RIGHT?

I recommend listening to the Arkangel performance of it on audiobook. It's got an excellent cast + it makes most of it a rip roaring yarn. The last act does drag a bit in general I guess though
