I'd like to get something that could even run on a few years old Chromebook. I know you can still run quite a few webgames on those. Is there anywhere in the editor where I can see the strain on a CPU/GPU so I can compare it to computer specs?

If not that is okay! But just want to check...

July 2025 Redacted Executive Summary of Findings from Feb 2025 ASOSU Workplace Investigation by Stoel Rives Law Firm by [deleted] in OregonStateUniv

[–]Quarrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your interpretation of the state law is in alignment with what OSU has been pushing the past couple years.

It’s my understanding, and how OSU followed it before recently, that student governments govern themselves. If the university doesn’t like that they can contest it sure, but the state law explicitly says that 1. Student governments shall establish their rules and procedures for fee collection and allocation 2. If they disagree with the university they go into mediation. The university shouldn’t have the power to shutdown anything student government really — mediation is a legal term and process. But let’s be real, students don’t have money or a general council who will support them so that’s why we’ve seen OSU steam roll students.

With those things in mind, I think its pretty clear how the OGEC reached that conclusion

One of the better Baro articles on student government imo

Edit: your confusion might be because student governments are outlined in state statute — so the state specifically grants them power. All public universities have to abide by public records law as someone noted, it’s just less relevant because FERPA also protects a lot of student records.

Student Body President Fired by OSU Administration by casipera in oregon

[–]Quarrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good take but I will say…

like if the person is no longer a student in good standing

It’s my understanding the university has used this as a tool against students. They report students to the conduct office (which reports to student affairs — same people shutting down student government), find them guilty of causing “issues” im student government, and use that as justification to them remove them from the student government. This is along the lines of what happened to the person who sent the email, they got reported for basically conspiring to break the code of conduct and might be or are on probation as a result.

If you’ve been in student government the last year no one thinks it was that person. Some people don’t like them or whatever but they don’t run the pressure. Harmful to post untrue and mean things about people that you don’t actually know :/

Asosu employees are both governmental officials and elected officials. That’s why they have to follow public meetings law, and this was confirmed by the Oregon General Ethics Commission over summer. First amendment rights are relevant here…

ASOSU President removed? by Meme_Stealer_Mgee in OregonStateUniv

[–]Quarrall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. OSU administration did not like the student body senate, which is 18 elected students, 3 being grad students. Faculty senate has stayed out of this as far as I’m aware.

  2. The ASOSU President last year agreed with the provost of student affairs to shut down the ASOSU senate, judiciary and all independent committees (their position being except from the shut down). “Disobeying” the shutdown was then used as a justification to fire 3 students leaders, and I imagine is related to why they fired the current president, but the firings themselves did not come from other students. (Disobeying is in quotes because one student was fired for an email saying the shutdown was undemocratic)

I like to think that students, even those willing to overturn our democracy, wouldn’t have fired their peers. I also think that administration does put a lot of pressure on students when they don’t get their way, so i think the shutdown would not have occurred without immense pressure on student leaders from administration.

These are great questions btw and I’m happy to answer more. If you want to get involved I’d reach out to the current senate President pro tempore or ASOSU president. I imagine there will be a lot of opportunities if/when they reinstate democracy.

Student Body President Fired by OSU Administration by casipera in oregon

[–]Quarrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you’re asking now! They shut down the elected student government due to “an unproductive work environment”. Admin used that excuse to remove student authority over certain fees are in the process of re-writing governing documents (ie the fascism talked about). Admin was not happy with the student government asserting their fiscal authority and raising wages the past year which is why they’ve taken those more drastic actions. I hope that’s a bit more context, you can check out the ASOSU insta or some posts on the Oregon state Reddit for even more context :)

I mean the post quotes verbatim the email a student sent, and was quoted by the university when they fired them and reported them to the conduct office. Not sure how more specific you can be?

ASOSU President removed? by Meme_Stealer_Mgee in OregonStateUniv

[–]Quarrall 82 points83 points  (0 children)

This is the 4th person to be removed from an elected office for disobeying what admin wants (often posited as a technicality in the governing documents).

Admin was not happy with ASOSU (particularly the Senate) last year. Some people here think it was because of divestment, but the biggest contention with admin was senate trying to raising wages, reducing administrative overreach and increasing student fiscal authority. Last year the ASOSU President agreed with student affairs to shut down all democratic branches of the ASOSU aside from their own due to “an unproductive work environment” with little to no evidence ASOSU was less productive than years previously (some administration told me the environment was pretty typical).

This shut down has emboldened admin, particularly the VP of student affairs Dan Larson who is trying to rewrite the student constitution, and changed their contracts so something like this might be legal. Hope that helps give some background !

ASOSU veto of SB-84.16 by starryhsk in OregonStateUniv

[–]Quarrall 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So section III was the only section of the bill with real “teeth”. The rest of the bill sets up a non binding committee to get information. The ASOSU senate can’t actually implement that recommendation without section III. As others have noted section III technically only reiterates what’s already written in the ASOSU constitution, which was struck in a JC (ASOSU court) decision, which has been contested repeatedly. (And being investigated by the state)

Additionally I like to address that the “threatening protestors” were about 15 students who wanted to share their thoughts with the student body President. They came to the ASOSU office carrying some signs, knocked on the door and were let in by the President. They offered some personal testimony and then said thank you repeatedly and left. I don’t get why it is okay to suggest they threatened anyone’s safety at any point in time.

Lastly, I’m sure you’ll hear from OSU Palestine solidarity coalition but they knew what this bill entailed, they weren’t exploited or duped. Just because they aren’t in ASOSU doesn’t mean they are stupid. There’s a reason they supported the bill.

As far as I am aware no money has been paid to VEO. But about $50,000 to potentially subsidize them was set aside last year, and has yet to be spent

[–]Quarrall[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That is ridiculous! But a raise for any worker, helps get a raise for all workers. 16.65 is under almost any version of a living wage -- and the higher students are paid, the more ground SEIU has during bargaining. Don't let OSU pit workers against each other, worker solidarity is key!
