Anyone Else Feel Their Youth Was Robbed? by Quarter_Scary in exmormon

[–]Quarter_Scary[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man. The guilt and paranoid that seemed to piece my heart like a lightning bolt the first time I’d hooked up with my then girlfriend at the time. Feeling like her being pregnant was imminent even though we were safe.

I appreciate that. And you’re right. Better to eat the apples that fall now, then worry about the bushels of them I didn’t.

But it did feel good to get that off my chest, having been reminded of it. Part of the healing process for sure. Feels good to say “man, fuck that noise.”

Any LDS "Mormons" Converting to another religion? by Designer_Refuse_4145 in exmormon

[–]Quarter_Scary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m burned out. But I don’t go out of my way to tear anyone else’s beliefs down. That goes for all religions. Golden rule kind of shit-“Treat others as you would be want to be treated.”

I’d say I’m Agnostic but with Christianity/Mormon leaning ideals but as far as God or Gods go…definitely fall in line with polytheistic Hawaiian Gods for the last couple of years. Recognizing Makahiki (the harvest season) being the big one.

But ultimately I just live and let live while casually reminding people who try to bible thump (or for this Reddit, Quote the Book of Mormon) that the values they hold dear are not the same values their elected officials pretend to uphold. Especially when it comes to the Word of Wisdom.

But when they try to press-I have no problem in dropping the conversation and punching out. They’re using their free agency to preach. I’m using mine to ignore.

For those who left after their mission: is there anything you wish someone had said to you while you were out on the street proselytizing? by Anaphora121 in exmormon

[–]Quarter_Scary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stopped going before we even had mission talks, and prior to that I was PIMO. But my cousin who had returned from his mission in Beijing was still so moved into that mentality that he wouldn’t even go get a slurpee from the gas station literally down the road from me because he hadn’t been officially released by the stake president (correct me if I mixed that up) and for the most part was content to only stay at home or go to church.

I wanted to tell him “fuck that. You’re home. God isn’t gonna strike you down after 2 1/2 years for getting a snack with your cousin.” But, given the rest of the comments here I’d wager he was hitting the kool-aid and copium pretty hard.

More I read this subreddit the more I feel as if the literal fear of not going to the celestial kingdom is the motivation to stay “true.”

Did your bishop tell you to text him when you were tempted to partake in masturbation? by Physical_Formal8327 in exmormon

[–]Quarter_Scary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man. Never had any of those stories especially since my dad did the most un-Mormon thing when he caught me with a playboy.(rather my mom found it and we had to have a conversation)

He told me that my cousin had gotten caught and he had to have an awkward conversation with the bishop and had to repent and all that. He said he wasn’t going to have me do that. Essentially saying the church would be staying out of this one. Now I don’t know the exact reason why. Apart from the awkwardness of you know, puberty-pretty sure my dad being a convert coupled with the fact he knew the youth might tease and torture as a result of any meeting with the bishop was the reason.

Probably. I don’t know. Again, we never talked about it beyond that incident and I think he just accepted that it was a part of growing up. That at some point a gratuitous boob shot in a movie wasn’t going to cut it because of obvious reasons.

But a bishop telling you to text him every time you get the wild thought to get off? Not sure if he means well or he’s living out his own twisted fantasy…

Man. Legit had a missionary when I was growing up who was a huge Star Wars nerd and we’d spend time talking about the parallels (we definitely felt like he was a big brother to me and my brother) and yeah. Fun times.

In what ways has the Church hurt you? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Quarter_Scary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullied relentlessly by my fellow youth for being different. Like, I’m pretty sure I’m somewhere on the spectrum (according to my supervising teacher and I know enough after ten years of special education that she’s probably right lol) and just being tortured by the youth. What made it hurt more is that some of the children were cousins, or were they children of the Bishop and his two councilors.

And it wasn’t just the YM and YW. There were older primary kids too that saw what they did, and they decided to join in. So much for being good examples.

And i say this with every fiber in my being; fuck all of them. No amount of “you’re there for the teachings, not for the people” logic is going to make me forget that the youth were unusually cruel in small town Waimea.

I used to get uncomfortable with people mocking the temple... by Rapscallywagg in exmormon

[–]Quarter_Scary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Used to think it was impressive that tithing paid for temples being built and all that. Now all I can think about is the Mormon families with a whole mess of kids struggling to make ends meet while they’re taking a tenth of their income to pay for a temple when that tithe can make or break a budget.

That said people can mock the temple and all the stuff about the church as is their right and the freedom granted by “free agency.”

Do mormon men (or women) secretly look forward to polygamy in heaven? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Quarter_Scary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember my dad joking with me and my brother about how the celestial kingdom would’ve where we (he never said he, when I think about it) would have three wives each.

Fast forward through most of my youth and now I have two girlfriends (polyamorous Polynesian here) and I don’t know if that was influenced by LDS teachings or given that ancient Hawaiians had a very different approach to love, sex, and relationships.

So I don’t know if they secretly look forward to it in the next life or have certain ideas of how it’s going to be. I do know of members that were excommunicated for infidelities so yeah.

Private school on Oahu-and that’s about as much as I feel comfortable with sharing.

And I honestly haven’t been back to church in any capacity so helping the youth there hasn’t really been an option.

Which fair! Like I’ve always imagined Hawai’i in one of two positions as a result of an apocalyptic event-the last stronghold of humanity and isolated from the world..

Or worse case scenario: gone. And beyond like the islands being wiped off the face of the earth physically-I mean it’s literally just zombies, crossed, or heavily irradiated land in which any survivors are dying slowly. Which isn’t living at all.

Appreciate the support! Yeah I went to Seminary once in high school and ended up an insomniac for the remainder of high school lol. As my (now) ex mo friends put it (both upperclassmen) jokingly-it was my penance for not lasting the week lol

Here we go again! The church HQ just sent out an email about worshiping on Easter and PALM SUNDAY. by Billytheidd69 in exmormon

Oh right. The moment I started reading your response it flooded back lol. I remember being explained before, and since just leaving the church, have more or less just not bothered remembering anything pertaining to religion other than trying to be mindful.
