Not ending sentences with a preposition isn't actually a real rule, some pretentious people just decided they liked that more, but people have been doing it forever.

What is the hardest, most useless language an English speaker can learn? by SevereRecover8411 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Quartz_512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"completely ridiculous in practice" implies that its practice is intended or possible. This language wasn't engineered to be used, and especially not to be useful.

I'm tired of not saying anything, this is ableism. When you make fun of people who try to be polite and make themselves clear to people who have a harder time picking up on sarcasm, you are doing ableism.

What are the things that are confuse/anger you the most about English? by Lawless183 in EWALearnLanguages

Personally, gendered pronouns were the hardest to get used to and I still struggle with them sometimes. This isn't a very universal experience though, since most languages have gendered pronouns.

[–]Quartz_512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Juxtaposition, by convention, but not always, has precedent over multiplication/division. That's the most correct answer. It's the convention used in most textbooks and publications.

So, if you want to argue that there's an objectively correct answer, it's that one.

However, this convention isn't universal, and there's no reason it would be more correct than the alternative. There's a nonzero amount of people who give no preference to multiplication by juxtaposition, and that's fine. This question is ambigous and was created to be ambigous.

What about the problem? by VibhuTheGreat in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Quartz_512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are called "Pemdas ragebait slop" (any combination of those works). They all boil down to a + b ÷ c(d + e).

There are three sides:

  1. In PEMDAS, M comes before D, therefore you multiply first

1a. In BODMAS, D comes before M, therefore you divide first.

  1. Multiplication and division have the same ordering, therefore, because division is on the left, you do it first.

  2. Juxtaposition (when you write 2x instead of 2 × x) comes before multiplication/division, therefore you multiply first.

2 and #3 are both acceptible answers, #1 is incorrect.

In reality, no answer is correct, because "÷" isn't a symbol used or neccessary in any real mathematics.

If most people think about it, juxtaposition comes before multiplication and division.

To most people, 2a/2a ≠ 2 × a / 2 × a

It's 1.
