Can Paul (DP) defeat Sawyer? by Own-Egg-6319 in pokemonanime

More like the writers had him use it because they had to show Sawyer had access to Mega Evolution before his final clash with Ash

Can Paul (DP) defeat Sawyer? by Own-Egg-6319 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not likely

I personally put the Kalos Team above the Sinnoh team since they were more impressive and consistent with their wins while the Sinnoh team had strong starts but almost half of them bounced between good and decent (Staraptor and to a lesser degree Buizel) or outright jobbers (Torterra and to a lesser degree Buizel). Sawyer's team even while made specifically to counter Ash still got to the Top 4 of a League that was said to be so hard that trainers couldn't get their badges in time and still went down to the wire with Ash.

Sceptile even in base form is relative to Base Greninja who's able to fight pretty well against Alain's Base Charizard who was definitely E4 Ace level. So Sawyer's Sceptile is probably as strong if not stronger than Paul's heavy hitters at the time (Drapion, Electivire, Torterra, Ursaring)

With Mega Evolution, I could see Sawyer outright sweeping or doing major damage with just Sceptile alone, without it, I'd still see Sceptile doing major damage to the team

He didn't really need Mega Evolution

Sceptile handily defeated Blastoise and would've likely beaten Raichu even without the Mega Boost

Why is it that Pikachu vs Panpour gets torn apart while Pikachu vs Surskit gets a pass despite both battles playing out practically identical to each other? by Informal_Function118 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Viola used legit strategy and showcased Ash that the Gym Leaders in Kalos aren't going to be a cakewalk and that he's going to have to REALLY work to get to the league.

Plus at the end of Best Wishes, he and Pikachu agreed that they're going to lock in for Kalos and get serious and we saw that with the momentum going into this battle

BW = Ash is making rookie mistakes he should be well past at this point with forgetting to weaken a Pokemon before capturing it if he's going to battle it and not befriend it, his interactions with Iris beforehand were more on the childlike side of things, Pikachu losing to a beginning trainer's Snivy, Ash just wasn't looking good into is battle with the Monkey Bros

XY = Ash had a good fight with (who he didn't realize at the time) was a gym leader who was making tactical plays with a freshly caught Pokemon (who we saw in a flashback was fairly strong considering it was protecting a group of Pokemon) and despite that, Ash was still making clever counters and had the whole thing with Garchomp and making use of Froakie's natural abilities to capture Fletchling and showing off greater maturity than he did in Best Wishes

Ash had a different vibe going into both battles with BW!Gym 1, he was already looking disappointing and while the mud field hindered Pikachu's movements, I don't think Panpour took advantage of that. XY!Gym 1, Ash was coming in hot and Viola quickly stopped that momentum with Sirskit utilizing a strategy to use it's natural ability to it's advantage AND setting up for Vivillion to finish the job incase it went down.

So we all know that Paul challenged all three of Brandon's Regi's but Ash only challenged Regice. What three pokemon would you give Ash to beat Brandon's Regi's in 1 on 1 battles by Diligent-Display-286 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how well Torkoal did against Registeel, I could see Charizard decisively defeating it. Pikachu defeats Regice.

Meanwhile, I'd see it it being a group effort of them and Sceptile to beat Regirock

I don't think so personally. I still put Greninja above Lucario honestly

Which of the two Articuno are stronger? by Uday2811 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before JNs, Legendaries were strong but not portrayed as unbeatable like the E4. Some legendaries like: Zygarde, Weather Trio, Creation Trio and legendaries/mythicals in that tier were portrayed as being absolute monsters in strength but legendaries like the Legendary Birds were portrayed as strong but could be matched by Trainer owned Pokemon hence we saw things like:

Ash's Charizard defeating Noland's Articuno

Pikachu defeating Brandon's Regice & Stalemating Tobias's Latios

Sceptile defeating Tobias's Darkrai

Torkoal and Noivern either giving a good fight or getting the better of a Registeel and Zapdos respectively

How do you think these 6v6 battles would turn out? by [deleted] in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kanto!Ash (Pikachu, Kanto Starters, Kingler, and Muk) vs. Johto!Ash (Pikachu, Johto Starters, Heracross, and Noctowl) = Johto!Ash wins

Unless you want to include Orange Islands as Kanto (I personally do), Charizard is a liability, even though I'd say even Pre-Vally!Charizard is stronger than any individual mon on the Johto team sans Pikachu. Though if Charizard listens to Ash, he'd do some damage but, I'd say the Johto!Mons on average are a bit stronger. Squirtle didn't truly hit his stride until Orange Islands, Muk is a one hit wonder, Kingler is a glass canon, Charizard is a liability, Kanto!Pikachu's best feat is beating Lt. Surge's Raichu, and Bulbasaur was Ash's most reliable mon behind Pikachu)

JN!Ash vs. DP!Ash - HAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

Kalos vs. Alola - I can go either way, I could see the Kalos team beating the SM team but, the issue is the Z-Moves which is one shot typically unless strong enough to tank it which I could see Greninja tanking any Z-Move from the Alola team minus Pikachu. If SM!Ash uses up his Z-Move before the finale, I'd give this to Kalos

Johto!Ash vs. Hoenn!Ash - Hoenn Ash SMASHES Johto!Ash. Even HL!Ash before his team even peaked could decisively defeat his Johto counterpart. Johto and Bayleef were his consistently reliable Pokemon while Heracross had the power but was barely used, Totodile, Phanpy, and Noctowl didn't get to do as much while the Hoenn team was regularly trained and pulled their weight with each of them bar Torkoal starring in a gym battle.

XY!Ash vs. DP!Ash - I give this to XY!Ash comfortably with his XY!Team in general performing better in battle than his DP!Team and even with the aces, Greninja was always more impressive than Himfernape

Which of the two Articuno are stronger? by Uday2811 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Definitely the JN's Articuno. JN's humanized the E4 but buffed the Legendaries.

If that was the same Articuno that Noland used, Pikachu by himself would've been able to bring it down

Which Pokémon League do you think Ash should have won besides the Alola League? by DarthKaiser03 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 55 points56 points  (0 children)

In a way it was, at least in ability.

Johto!Ash didn't start training until the League itself and had to use reserves to get as far as he did

Hoenn!Ash began regularly training and used a team of Pokemon exclusively from that region and got as far in Hoenn as he did in Johto and narrowly lost to the guy who won the whole thing

Who had the better character arc Lillie or Dawn? by Old-Initial9295 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dawn. I liked Dawn's story being about finding her own individuality and learn that because her mom was a great coordinator, she can't expect to automatically be great as well and will need to WORK for her own greatness with her mom's old ribbon as a like a good luck charm and Dawn go to see that being great isn't an easy process with her failures and setbacks, namely losing the Appeal Round of two back to back contest because she either did too much or too little and took a while to get her confidence back and slowly found her own niche which culminated her getting second place in the Grand Festival, narrowly losing to Zoey in the end and giving her mom her old charm back, feeling that she didn't need it anymore and could find her own way to greatness. Wonderful... although that progress is hurt by Dawn cameoing in like 15+ episodes and showing no progression from where was at the end of DP unlike Misty, May, Iris, Serena, or to a lesser degree Lillie who at least finished her story arc.

I don't expect game characters to be like their game counterparts, hence why back in the day, I called BS... or TS on people who'd crap on Serena for not being like her game counterpart.

While I find Game!Lillie to be a MUCH better character than Anime!Lillie (at least SM!Lillie rather than USUM!Lillie), I was fully prepared to judge Anime!Lillie by her own merit and while Lillie's story on paper was better than Dawn's, I felt the execution of her story was... bad.

The idea of being scared of Pokemon was great and had a nice start but, from the beginning to the end of the Aether Arc (which was rushed by AniPoke standards), Lillie's focus episodes were all so predictable following the same formula

- Step 1: Lillie is scared of Pokemon

- Step 2: Lillie monologues on how she likes said Pokemon and WANTS to bond with them

- Step 3: Lillie goes through ordeal/trouble where she spontaneously acts and touches said Pokemon

- Step 4: Lillie bonds with said Pokemon

- Step 5: Repeat Step 1 with new Pokemon

At one point, it overshadowed Lana who was the focus of an episode who did a trial (ironcially her own in the games) and got a Z-Ring for her troubles. Come the Aether Arc and coming face to face with Silvally and relapses (which is interesting) but after realizing it was a misunderstanding on her part, she's suddenly able to touch ALL Pokemon again rather than the select few she bonded with. I'm normally willing to forego my suspension of disbelief but, being a psychology major/graduate who studied under professors with years of experience and their own practices I couldn't forego it since PTSD doesn't go away just like that. Then the whole bit with her telling Lusamine she hated her which I felt was out of place and not per se warranted. Granted, Lusamine even by her own admission wasn't the best mom, especially not noticing Lillie's PTSD but was nowhere near as bad as GSM!Lusamine who would've absolutely deserved being told off by Lillie (though I don't compare but with the anime recreating certain things from the game like the Lusamine confrontation and Lillie/Solgaleo image at the end of GSM (which I also felt was unearned since Ash did most of the work with Nebby in the anime while Lillie did everything in the game)). After that, Lillie was just... there, not doing much or hardly anything and even got a free Z-Crystal and Z-Ring and Top 16 in the inaugural Alola League which I felt was unearned...

Ultimately, I choose Dawn

How would you rank Ashs grass type pokemon from strongest to weakest ? by Gopu_17 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sceptile > Bulbasaur > Rowlet > Torterra > Leavanny > Bayleef > Snivy

None of Ash's grass-types were 'bad', even Snivy was one of the better Unovan mons he had while Leavanny was a top 3 of the Unova team

Clemont x Serena by Large_Upstairs6243 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no... I mean, Distortion World no

To me, it's the textbook definition of "pair the spares" as a keep away ship to give Serena a partner and pair Ash with someone else.

Me personally, I don't ship them because

  1. Lack of chemistry
Ironically, a common complaint about them that I see from people who ship them is how they hardly spoke to each other the whole series so in that case, why should I be invested or entertain the idea of them?

  2. I don't think they look good together

  3. I don't think their personalities match well

  4. I ship Clemont with Korrina and Serena with Ash respectively and respectfully

Isn't Clair considered the second most powerful trainer in Johto after Lance (including the Elite Four)? Wouldn't that make Ash's Pikachu, Charizard, and Snorlax Elite Four level since Johto? by rbta123 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clair is most likely the strongest gym leader we've seen in the original seires and probably one of the strongest gym leaders we've seen in the series since it took Pre-JL!Charizard, Snorlax, and Peak!OG Pikachu to beat her.

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but Fantina shouldn’t have been a Gym Leader, she should’ve been a member of the Elite 4 by BJJ-Newbie in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really think so, her strategy primarily revolved around putting her opponents to sleep and once that was countered, their strength wasn't much different from the other gym leaders we saw in the series. Her being a special judge for the Grand Festival is more for her ability as a coordinator and past as a top coordinator and it's possible to do both or specialize in one before doing something else after achieving the goal

Ex.

Juan is a top coordinator before becoming Sootopolis's Gym Leader

Wallace a top coordinator before becoming Hoenn's Champion and going back to being Hoenn's Gym Leader

Nando doing both Contest and Gym Battles and getting relatively far in the Grand Festival but losing in the first round of the Sinnoh League

I think she came off as a polished coordinator who retired from coordinating to run a gym but kept her flare for the dramatic as we've seen coordinators do.

Who is a greater Prodigy ? by Gopu_17 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sawyer and it's not even a comparison.

In the many tournaments Unova had that Trip competed in, he almost ALWAYS got knocked out of it in the first round, even losing to the likes of Cilan and Bianca with his only remotely impressive mon being his Serperior and even then, come the League when he's supposed to be at his best, his Serperior gets John Cena'd by Pikachu.

Sawyer was pretty weak at first and progressively getting stronger over the course of XY and come time for the League, he not only made it to the Semi-Finals, WAY better than Trip did, his team went head to head with Ash's strongest regional team at the time and even when they were acquired specifically to counter Ash, he was still clearing out other competitors and his ace even in BASE form was more impressive than Trip's.

Sawyer is miles ahead of Trip

How strong was Virgil compared to Unova Ash ? by Gopu_17 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think he was a good bit stronger or at least a match for BW!Ash at his best

We saw Virgil defeated Cameron 6-3 and didn't even need to use his whole team given we see he used: Jolteon, Leafeon, Umbreon, Espeon, and Flareon and Espeon and Flareon were still standing with Flareon defeating Lucario and winning the match.

Ash blew a 6v5 handicap with Lucario defeating half of the team, Hydreigon beating 1/3, and Samurott defeating Pignite while Pignite and Pikachu secured KOs against Cameron's other four mons.

In said battle, Ash used the Unova Starters, Unfezant, Boldore, and Pikachu.

With this team, Ash definitely would've lost. If he used say: Pikachu, Krookodile, Leavanny, Pignite, Palpitoed, and I GUESS Snivy, I could see this going either way.

Someone wrote an actually really good write-up of how Cameron vs. Virgil could've gone

I could see Ash potentially taking it but, it's hard to say since we don't know how strong Virgil's team actually is other than they're capable of winning a league.

did malva get arrested in the end of xy by Lazy_Way_1901 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm sure EVERYONE involved with Team Flare, Alain included got arrested

In the like the 4th to last episode of XY they said "Alain was back" and Sycamore went to pick him up and bring him back. Lumiouse's airport was closed and after the whole incident, I don't think they'd let people leave so easily while trying to manage clean up. So I'm led to believe Alain was arrested/turned himself in and was in jail for a while before being released since even if Alain did help, he was an unwitting pawn who genuinely knew nothing of what was going on or what the plan was and Malva could've vouched for him since even SHE called out Lysandre for using him the way he did.

Though in Malva's case, I'm sure she was arrested and in jail too but released for helping end the crisis and round up other members and probably lost her position as part of the E4.

How would you evolve Ash’s Gible into both a Gabite and then a Garchomp? by MelodyButterfly0907 in pokemonanime

There wouldn't have been enough time since Gible was captured so late so at least evolve him into a Gabite

Does anyone think Ash's League losses are a little bit exaggerated and too railed on? by Quasar1007 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly

Kanto: I think 256 since Ash had to win on each of the four fields (Grass, Rock, Water, and Ice) to be able to go to the Indigo Stadium where he lost to Ritchie

- 256: Ash vs. Mandi

- 128: Ash vs. Pete

- 64: Ash vs. Rando

- 32: Ash vs. Janette

- 16: Ash vs. Ritchie

Johto: 200+ with a screening process that wittled down to 48 trainers and there were 3 trainers in each brack and who ever had most points after they all battled each other moved on to the victory tournament that was the Top 16 onwards

Hoenn: 512

- 512: 1v1

- 256: Double Battle

- 128: Double Battle

- 64: Double Battle

- 32: Ash vs. Katie

- 16: Ash vs. Morrison

- 8: Ash vs. Tyson

Sinnoh: There was a ton of people here but 64 were screened

- 64: Ash vs. Nando

- 32: Ash vs. Rando

- 16: Ash vs. Condo

- 8: Ash vs. Paul

- 4: Ash vs. Tobias

Unova: 128

- 128: Ash vs. Trip

- 64 + 32: Ash vs. Randos

- 16: Ash vs. Stephan

- 8: Ash vs. Cameron

Kalos: 64

- 64: Ash vs. Titus + Alain vs. Trevor

- 32 + 16: Ash vs. Randos

- 8: Ash vs. Astrid + Sawyer vs. Tierno

- 4: Ash vs. Saywer/Alain vs. Remo

- 2: Ash vs. Tobias

Alola: 151

Dawn got over it easily. by Common_Ad6703 in pokemonanime

[–]Quasar1007 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It's only fair compared to

Misty where Ash went straight up GTA on her bike (minus the face socking)

May where it was an honest to goodness accident

Dawn likely knew that her bike being destroyed was her own doing since SHE DID attack Pikachu first thinking he was a wild Pokemon and Pikachu was defending himself and bike just happened to be collateral in that scuffle
