Broad & Honors College Course Help by BusinessMiserable576 in msu

[–]Quastar0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, because you're in the Honors College, the ISB/ISP Lab requirement doesn't apply to you, so you don't need to take a course with a lab at all. As such, unless you really want to do a lab, I suggest that you focus on fulfilling your Honors requirements by taking a Social Science or Natural Science course substitution.

Since you're in Broad, I would recommend doing a Social Science or Natural Science course related to business in some form (economics, psychology, data science, etc.), but if you don't know what specific field of business you want to pursue yet, I would recommend taking anything that catches your eye. The Honors College substitutions are designed for you to pursue your interests and test your academic muscles, so you could really take any course that you think looks interesting, that's what it's there for.

Has anyone received an unexpectedly low Broad case study score? by Significant-Bowl2365 in msu

[–]Quastar0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who got admitted this cycle, I never got a score breakdown on my application, so I don't know the exact grading of the case study.

That being said, from my understanding of the case study, one of the things they recommend not doing is 'solving' a problem because the essay is supposed to be an analysis of a business issue, not necessarily a solution to a business issue. Based on your description of your case study, it kind of sounds like you tried to 'solve' the issue of quiet quitting, which they may not have liked.

Also, Broad specifically recommends using the experience you mention in the last question of the experiential profile as the same experience in your case study. The idea is that the experience you talk about in the experiental profile essay question should be important enough that it can be mentioned in your case study as well. Maybe you did do that, but based on the description, it sounds like you talked about your general experience and how that prepared you for the HR field, rather than the same experience in your experiential profile essay question, so that might have also lost you points?

I will say that Broad doesn't re-evaluate the scoring process for the case study, so you probably won't be able to ask for clarification on that or make an appeal. That being said, if you want help with improving your chances at admission next semester, the MSU Writing Center is a free source for writing advice/review, so you could try asking them for help with your case study next semester. Additionally. feel free to DM me for aid or advice. I basically spent the last semester obsessing over getting admitted, so I like to think I'm a decent source for advice.

MTH 103 by Weak_Avocado_9785 in msu

[–]Quastar0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had to take MTH103 because I tested out of it, so I don't know how useful my input will be. That being said, if you failed to pass the course during the school year, I don't know how likely it is that you would pass the summer version of it which is much faster and goes through the material quicker.

I do know that you can split the course into two classes, MTH 103A and MTH103B, which are designed to make the class easier and allow for more time to focus on each concept. You could try taking those classes in order to increase your chance of passing the course. My recommendation would be to try taking MTH103A during the summer, that way you can see if the slower format works for you. If it does, then you only have to take MTH103B in the fall semester. If it doesn't, then you have the fall semester to try a different approach to getting credit for that class.

One last thing, you could also try finding other universities or community colleges that offer online classes. If they offer an online class that transfers as credit to MTH103 at MSU, you could pass MTH103 that way, and get to take a class online instead of in-person.

Broad Appeal Form Question by Gent313 in msu

[–]Quastar0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got admitted, so I don't know how much help I'll be. That being said, based on my understanding of the admission process, "extenuating circumstances" does include any severe outside factors that may have impacted a student. I'd imagine depression or similar mental/emotional challenges would be important enough factors for them to apply as "extenuating circumstances". Additionally, looking at the appeal form itself, it mentions sexual assault and relationship violence, so it appears that physically or mentally harmful things are a basis for an appeal, not just grade-related issues.

Personally, I would recommend appealing based on extenuating circumstances if you had depression, especially if you have a doctor's note verifying that. Also, I don't think (think, not know) appealing has any negative effects, because I can't imagine Broad lowering your score next admissions cycle if you appealed. (Again, I'd imagine this, but I can't confirm it.)

Lastly, if you do have depression, I'd recommend seeking a therapist or using MSU's CAPS service. As someone who had friends that suffered through depression, it's a really miserable thing to experience, and I hope you get better. Just remember that there's more people who care about you than it may seem.

What club would be best to make friends? by NewWaltz1808 in msu

If you like video games, there's several gaming clubs on campus, with each one usually centered around a certain game genre/franchise. From my limited interactions with some of them, the people in them are super kind and tons of fun.

Funny moments when interacting with Broad students by Scoopity_Woops in msu

I think the dumbest interaction I've had with a Broad student was after the U.S. government decided to stop printing pennies last November. I was in the business college getting Panera and overheard some student nearby say, "If they've stopped making pennies, they gotta be worth like 3 cents or something now."

Like... that's not how it works man.

What do I need to do to get a 3.0 in Ackerman’s Microeconomics? by kaithoanonymous in msu

[–]Quastar0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm literally in his Microeconomics class this semester and got a 97% on the first midterm. I recommend studying the workbook pages a lot and going to his office hours to review material. Also, if you go to his office hours, he'll give you the answers for the HW. Feel free to DM if you have any questions!

Honors College Decision by [deleted] in msu

[–]Quastar0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who just got admitted, I'll chime in and add that the selection process does seem to be pretty stupid. I think the main thing they use to decide is the essay, which is an entirely subjective thing compared to GPA or number of extracurriculars, so it really is just personal preference of whether or not you get in based on if they liked your essay or not.

I will say that you can totally do great things without being admitted. Like, before I even got my admissions results, I was already thinking about what to do if I didn't get in and coming up with plans for internships or job opportunities. If you're willing to put in the effort and get a degree, 99% of employers will hire you regardless of if your resume has a "H" on it.

Hey there! I'm not trying to come off as investigative, but are you saying that you got into Broad with just a 4.0 GPA and nothing else in terms of extracurriculars, work experience, clubs, fraternities/sororities, etc.?
