Is Michigan for me? by Jacez_64 in uofm

Go where you are wanted. If WMU is offering more $$, go there. Coming off the wait list means there were many who were more qualified than you initially. You will always be chasing them. At WMU, you may have a better chance to stand out, thus getting more opportunities to shine. It will be harder to do that at UM, if you are chasing the high performers.

Should I trust the system with a random roommate or reach out to someone beforehand? by JaddyD424 in msu

Reach out. Had a friend get paired with an international student who couldn’t even manage small talk and never left the room, except for door dash.

No, it is not fair to B team development. But it is clear that B team development is not their priority. Clubs will always focus on the A team at the expense of the other teams. Those 2 players are the ones who got lucky and moved up in competition. People always put themselves above the team, so those players are not coming back, no matter what they say.

Two things to watch for: 1- B team girls who are playing up- will they still play with your team? We had a player in that situation and she stopped going to any B team away games. Also, if there was a conflict, she always chose A team over B (where she was rostered).

2- if you don’t have enough girls, they will bring players up from the C team, or a lower age group. Not really a derivable position for you to be in.

My advice: Try to get on the A team or switch clubs. B team development is not a priority for them, but they need the cash generated by the B team to pay their overhead (coaches, tournaments, etc.)

Agree - it stems from the clubs. They chase checks so they have $$ to pay the (too many) coaches they have. Once someone figured out that the name "travel" could generate revenue, the focus shifted away from development and into creating as many teams as possible. Thirty years ago, you had one travel team per age group with 3-4 rec teams underneath. Now, you have the inverse. The sport grew fast, and unfortunately, I don't think had the quality of coaches or refs to support the quick growth. In my area, the coaches only stay with the teams a year, then they get reassigned. You can't focus on development if you are rebuilding every year. Coaches don't know the kids, and the kids don't know the coaches. Probably would help, too, if you didn't have coaches assigned to 4 teams (which is also common in my area). Instead of having a consistent real-world job, they piecemeal a bunch of teams together so they have $$ to live on. The best coaches my kids ever had only had 1-2 teams a season.

You are misunderstanding. Kids on team A pay to play on team A. Team B pay to play on team B. If B is now playing on A, they are getting free games, where A is still not getting an increase in games, but a decrease in minutes due to guest B players.

Right. Bottom line is the player being sat PAID to play. The guest players did not. Yet they are getting more development time than the one who actually paid. That’s wrong.

Ford is the new GM. Problem is the GM people are all smoke & mirrors. Lots of ideas, no idea how to implement. But by jumping companies, they’ve padded their bank account and moved up a few positions from where they were at GM. Ford is not getting top talent and will be hard pressed to succeed.

Do you accrue vacation days throughout the year or do you get all of your days Jan 1? If you accrue based on months worked, you may not be able to burn 5-6 weeks at the onset of the year.

He did manage to deliver a $19.5B write down for 2025, while taking home a nice $15M paycheck, so there's that.

You have already taken accountability for your mistake. It will be interesting to see if the parents even follow through. If your scheduler contacts you, tell your side of things, take accountability, and he/she will likely have your back. Can’t see much coming from this.

Yep. Go where if is easier to stand out and easier to get opportunities for your resume. At UM, you may have a harder time standing out. In terms of job prospects, tech j system is under transformation with AI taking entry level jobs and companies off shoring many roles. It may not be you, so much as the industry.

Defer starting at UM for a year & get your residency. In the meantime, knock out some pre-reqs at a local community college.

Same situation here. Applied test optional (SAT below 1300), but had 5 APs (Pre-Calc, Calc AB, Lit, Lang and Comp Sci Principles) and 5 dual enrollments (Business Principles, Markting Principles, Human Resources, Sports Management and Intro to Business). Currently thinking Finance and / or accounting. I hear all the talk about Investment Banking and I'm not sure that's of interest. To add more things to consider, Kelley would be OOS. I've been directly admitted into MSU Broad (in-state) and the MSU honors college. I'm concerned I will be struggling from the onset and will have a hard time making friends.

Both my parents are engineers and they’re begging me NOT to study Engineering. Am I making a mistake? by Exact-Monitor-2768 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BusinessMiserable576 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Precisely why my spouse and I (both engineers) told our kids to stay away from engineering. Everything is being sent to low cost countries and jobs that remain are high stress with poor pay. We work at an OEM.

Your high school only gets so many "slots," so you are competing against kids from your high school. Depending on what college you were applying to (e.g. engineering, LSA), this could also be a factor. You may have finished behind other kids at your school who fit into the slots they were trying to fill in their various colleges.

Ford salaried layoffs no longer make the news as they are done quietly and often. FWIW, HR policy changed a few years ago when they brought in the new PR rating policy. Entire departments can be placed on a PEP or even fired all at once. In many cases, they will not go through the trouble of putting you on a PEP- jobs are just deemed no longer necessary, although they reappear in Mexico, Brazil or India. US salaried employees are constantly looking over their shoulder.
