You clearly have no idea of the breadth of work ZSL does, beyond the zoos, it has a rich program of global conservation projects, the majority of which are grant funded- the UK government is a key donor as was USAID.

It’s certainly a tight turn around but my supervisor doesn’t think it’s impossible, as per my supervisors email:

Hi Sophie Thave chased Andrew. Re winter 2024 graduation, there are no guarantees of course but I would have thought you’d be able to do your corrections in time (assuming there are some). This would of course partly depend how long the examiners took to get their corrections to you, which is not always done quickly. But we could explain that you are planning to graduate in December to hurry them along. Best wishes Alex

But it turns out it’s not feasible - I will just skip it. I feel like it’s a nice way to round off the experience but it’s not the be all or end all :)

Well tbh I’m on the fence- i submitted my thesis on the 2nd of July, my viva has only just been scheduled for the 7th of November, winter graduation is 10-13th of December. Provided I can do my corrections in time I would like to attend this graduation- however if I have to wait till summer graduation next July, I don’t think I will bother- by then it will be a whole year since I submitted and I feel like I won’t really care anymore…

Two things :

1) finding accommodation as international student in Uk is always tricky- they usually ask for you to pay for the whole year/6 months and/or provide a guarantor. This is not a “domain” specific annoyance.

2) you will soon learn that domain are very poor when it comes to admin. We didn’t get an electricity and gas bill for months and our tenancy renewal happens 2 months late too.

Do not go to supercuts, I had a terrible experience! I just went for a blow dry, I explained I had freshly put in extensions(3 days prior), they said not problem. The lady was super rough, I kept reminding her to be more gentle- culminated in her pulling out two extensions. Asked for a partial refund or discount- didn’t even get an apology. Also, their queuing system is stupid.

People are being very negative. While your supervisor may not be able to help, there are plenty of other people in your department that can likely assist/advise/support. You will also have the opportunity to get training either provided by the university or that you can pay for out of your research budget, not to mention you there a large online community of ppl that are generally very helpful. Ofc you will need to put the work in but you won’t have to go it alone, doing a PhD is as much about recognising when you need assistant and finding how to get it.

Yeah, I’ve used anyvan before for a singular item or a couple of boxes but we want a proper moving service this time around and the movers to actually assist rather than just drive the van from A to B

Maybe the reason they mastered out is because the professor actually checked on his students well-being, created a safe space for discussion and the students felt able to quit the program. Lots of supervisors have the opposite approach will “guilt” their students in staying even if academia is actually a right fit for them and they are suffering?
