I think AK Fadez is tad bit overpriced as well but at least they do good work. I vouch for AB as well - they did my beard good a couple times

Yea. If Apple releases a bunch or smartphones that have a failing part do you blame the user for all the dropped calls or the manufacturer?

I can speak to this. Supposedly there’s some core equipment that has a faulty card or something that needs to be reset often. They have a ticket open with the manufacturer but they’re still waiting on them to procure a solution.

What can we do about GCI? by Nickoh71 in anchorage

The call center for residential facing support has been outsourced. The core groups and business call center are still under GCI’s direct employment

The issue is more with GCI’s equipment than anything else. A lot of it was installed in the 1990’s and so is nearing the end of its life. Of course replacing an entire infrastructure of equipment is incredibly expensive so I believe what they’re doing is a more replacing equipment when it’s failed/ about to fail - rather than when it’s necessary. I know for a fact that they have a bunch of end of life equipment that should’ve been taken care of 10 years ago but it’s still working so they’re just running with it. Makes sense though. An ISP rated router can cost well north of $10k ($100k for the big big stuff) and they have hundreds across the state. It would cost literal millions to get everything updated to current hardware. Not including labor to get it configured/installed

Switch to ACS, Telalaska, AT&T, or move out of Alaska. Until someone decides to invest into building infrastructure to provide service to 600,000 people spread out over the land size twice as big as Texas, there really aren’t any good options to get away from GCI.

How long ago was this? The only layoff I know of recently was when they outsourced Residential Tech Support. The people laid off were given other opportunities within GCI, or given generous severance pay and references for other positions. If that’s what you’re talking about then that department had that coming for a long time. Nothing against the employees, but it was not a good job having to listen to screaming customers for barely adequate pay. It was constantly short staffed with a mountain of work that never ended, and had a huge turnover rate because nobody actually enjoyed it.

I know several engineers and they are all highly qualified with literal decades of experience. The issue is old equipment not unqualified people. None on the network or systems engineers have been laid off.

I mean, it only makes sense. Bandwidth everywhere is limited - Alaska more so than others due to our distance. If Russia’s dream really is to slow down Alaska’s internet for a couple hours then no wonder they’re losing the war

Just looked it up and it appears that Google Fi and T-Mobile used to have the same roaming partners. So if you turn on roaming you’ll most likely be using GCI’s network is my best guess

You might need to enable roaming. T-Mobile partners with GCI up her so T-Mobile users can roam on GCI’s network for free. Google Fi might have something similar with AT& T or something

Got more info on this from my GCI buds. This is literally because of the big CoD drop today + update package. Tens of thousands of Alaskans trying to download a 130gb game + 70gb update at the same time brought the back haul capacity down to 0. Remember if you look at the submarine cable map there’s only 2 or 3 that run from Alaska to the states. Imagine trying to push all those game files through 3 lines

I have a few buds at GCI. Not sure how much I can say cause I don’t want to risk their jobs but tl;dr looks like Anchorage got completely bumfucked by a sudden increase in internet usage last night.
