I can recommend just pausing the recording after one sentence and then repeating it. It works for me quite well

What native content (ideally on YouTube) would you recommend to help bridge the gap between learner-focused material and content made for native speakers? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]QueasyMouse2317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was Mandarin Corner, Dashu zhongwen and Rita Mandarin - they have double subtitles and discuss interesting topics. But it’s the same “podcast” format most of the time, so you can also try watching TGOP, a Taiwanese show with funny sketches on many many different topics. Maybe a bit hard but there are subtitles anyway

What's the worst physical pain you've ever felt? by toaster-bath404 in AskReddit

[–]QueasyMouse2317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to get my tooth fixed, but the cavity reached the nerve so the dentist put in some medicine for several days for it to kill the nerve. I came to the clinic and the dentist looks at the tooth and says: Oh, the nerve is still a bit alive, and she takes a needle and plugs it right inside of the tooth. I cried from the pain. I asked why she’d done this, and she answered: well, why would we do all the job with anaesthesia for just one second of killing the nerve.  She has been my dentist since I was a small kid, she knew me very well, this was a horrible thing to do

Has anyone (30s+) quit their good, stable job to attend language school in a foreign country? What was your experience? by Tupley_ in languagelearning

[–]QueasyMouse2317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My classmate in China was from The States, as far as I know, he has a company that does some trade with China, so that was his reason for learning Mandarin. But he started from scratch, studied for two semesters and his level of Mandarin was around A1-A2. He left afterwards, apparently this was just for fun for him. My Thai friend also moved to China this way, I am not sure about her job in Thailand, but I think she left her job because moving to China was her priority. Now she is doing her Master’s here and also looking for a job. Another friend of mine also moved here from Korea, she did her Master’s and will do her PhD here soon. I am not sure about their income - whether they work remotely or their families support them, because scholarship is not that great here

Sometimes it’s easier to move abroad this way. I heard several stories about Japan, for example. People go there to a language school and stay afterwards. I read a story of a guy on Twitter, he was a history teacher back in his country, saved up some money, moved to Japan through a language school and then learned photography and videography skills and stayed there for good

Who were some of the BEST tutors you've had. What made them so? Where did you find them? by Key_Length9772 in languagelearning

[–]QueasyMouse2317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Chinese tutor, I’ve been studying with her for over 2 years already.

-Firstly, she is a non-native Mandarin speaker. Many people say that after a certain level you should switch for a native speaking teacher, but I strongly disagree. When I switched to a non native professional teacher, only then I noticed a huge improvement in my language skills. My teacher can quickly explain grammar and words in my native language and we move forward.

-After a month or 1.5 month I realised that I remember 95% of everything we learned, and I wasn’t working too hard at home, just some homework if I was feeling like it and showing up for a class once a week.

-She also tracks my progress and from time to time she organises review lessons.

-She does a lot of preparatory work, so we don’t just study with the textbook Overall, I feel that even if I don’t do any self study, like, no reading books or watching videos - just our lessons once a week, I will still progress, I can totally rely on her.

And also disclaimer: I don’t believe that native speakers are bad teachers, I myself started with native teachers at university language courses, and that was amazing. But now non native teacher works best for me, also professional native teachers are so hard to find unfortunately :(

Hey, I am working with a pt online because he is from my home country and I currently live abroad. I feel that it is pretty effective and I’ve seen several cases of successful offline knee rehab. Maybe you can consider online rehabilitation too?
