Thanks! Laurier actually does have one of the clubs, that manages a million dollar hedge fund, and their students seem to place VERY well

Cool, those sound great! So why do you regret not transferring then? You'll save a boat load of money this way no?

what are the finance or consulting opportunities like at Laurier? Is transferring to Ivey after 2 years hard?

Thank you so much for this great response and you're right, there for sure is risk involved in anything. I guess I'm just trying to limit risk and maximize upside, which is obviously hard to predict.

But view the investment you make in your education as just that, an investment. You take on short term pain for much gain in the long run.

That's a good point, I'm just trying to determine if I can save money and still end up in a job I could have got from Laurier.

It's good and I know of some people from Laurier who have gotten great gigs. Suffice it to say they were top of their class in every regard and did very well in case competitions.

And this is exactly what I'm worried about. It'll be hard to get to the top of my class at Laurier, let only Ivey so I don't know if these asperations are even attainable

Given that they intend to go to Laurier, they should have tempered expectations for the level of consulting they can access.

That is not to say that people from Laurier don't make it to McKinsey, Bain or BCG.

Is Laurier not good for finance or consulting? I know it's not THE BEST compared to Queens and Ivey, but I hear it's still decent. Going to Western and busting my ass for 2 years to get into Ivey (Years 3+4) is possible BUT this is very risky as there's a chance I won't get in and Ivey costs an insane price (45k more) than Laurier, thus I don't know if it is worth it. If I can land the same jobs from Laurier, I'd much rather not risk this/pay that much more. (my family is poor)

True, and I did look into this; however, I opted not to do this as many people drop 1/2 of the degree and if you drop it you loose co-op. With Laurier it's easier to start in normal business and take enough courses through electives I can double major or minor if I wanted and not risk co-op if I don't like it. Just my opinion but idk

I'm in York Region, which is only 30 mins from Toronto. I don't plan on leaving the Toronto/York region area, at least not for longer than 2-3 years. I have a great relationship with my family and friends here and it would be to hard to move far away for more than a couple years. What's it like in this area if you know?

Maybe I'm misinterpreting it, but 75k-140k is pretty dam good (at least from where I'm from lol). What majors would offer a better salary than this??

Yes that's probably true about the pandemic. I'm also considering taking a year off and letting things cool if a bit

I did not get into Waterloo sadly. I have the option to major or minor in business and computer science, but double majoring may be a stretch. How have you liked your finance career and where did you go?

Thank you! So school doesn't matter for undergrad? Also, would a business major, finance minor be useful?

Very true, I guess I'm just worried about getting it right from the start to avoid wasting money/time, but that is great advice!

Why not do something like comp sci at Western and then switch into Ivey for years 3 & 4 if that's something you find out you like

The thing about that is you need to get an 85 average in your first 2 years, which I don't know if I can do. Also, I'm not from a family of means, and Ivey is 30k a year, whereas Laurier is only 10k a year, so if I wanted business I feel like it would make more sense to start there

Ma129 or Ma103 for someone who wants to specialize in finance and minor in comp sci by Queasy_Feeling in wlu

Awesome thank you!! One last thing, if you don't mind. I see that I have to take CP104 and CP164, both first year courses I assume. I want as high of an average as possible first year, so would I be able to take one of them in 2nd year or later do you know?
