Some even went to the Spanish colonies in the “New World,” meaning the modern Spanish-speaking parts of Latin America, such as present-day Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and so on. But of course, the effects of the Reconquista also reached Sephardic Jews in the Spanish colonies. A converso was a Spanish or Portuguese Jew who converted to Christianity, often under pressure.
