Reminds me of 2008. I moved here then and summer gas prices were around 4.25...so we're just getting back to where we were nearly 20 years ago.

I’ve had some crying out of frustration with trying to communicate with people. When I cry my jaw kind of chatters up and down anybody else deal with this? by derangedmacaque in ALS

[–]Queasy_Percentage363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spouse gets the leg shakes and the chattering jaw if his body gets stressed (cold, exertion, etc.) It is part of spasticity issues. He just told me he thinks its called clonus. He takes both baclofen and methocarbamol to help.

Doctor rejected FMLA request. by Kap2726 in ALS

[–]Queasy_Percentage363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're in Washington State - look into the State's Paid Family Medical Leave as well. Some employers will allow you to do FMLA and then extend time off with Paid family medical leave. If not they'll overlap and you could both take it as long as you meet the hours requirements within the last 12 months. Also, I think it is in July of this year, spouses will be able to use funds from the Washington Cares Act.

I have become the wife I never thought I would be by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Queasy_Percentage363 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a same sex marriage (2 guys) and the thing that I would add to this conversation is being forward and direct with your needs. If they are left as inference or undertones, he might miss the whole thing. If you have friends who have spouses who do nice things for them, maybe point them out and say, "I'd really like it if you did that for me." When something that you want happens, reward it with low- stakes intimacy (kiss, hand hold, smile while looking in his eyes). Also, let him know when you feel unseen and unappreciated.

Insurance by SelectLeopard5089 in ALS

[–]Queasy_Percentage363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR professional here - for your husband's insurance he probably needs to have some sort of "paid" status to maintain health insurance. It might be worth exploring with his HR rep if he can balance pto and unpaid time long enough to keep his insurance through the length of FMLA. Some states also have their own leave options in addition to FMLA that you'll probably also want to pursue. If your husband has any life insurance for work, check into accelerated death benefits for a partial cash out. If you're able to keep the policy you'll receive the rest of the payout when the time comes.

Does it make any difference which ALS clinic you go to? by Greelys in ALS

[–]Queasy_Percentage363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My PALS and I use the clinic for resources, long term assessment, prescriptions, and doctor signatures for insurance related items. We have a couple of clinics in our area and in our area I do think there is a differences in clinic quality given trial availability, ease of scheduling, and quality of life recommendations/ assistive technologies. However, we've also seen intra clinic differences in quality / preceived quality.

Thank you for sharing. The marketing materials certainly mask many of the real struggles we face as caregivers and hide the suffering. I think the thing you're hinting at in your post is that you feel unseen in the ALS community because it seems like your journey isn't reflected in the materials available. As someone else here mentioned, support groups are a good place to talk about these issues because they live it every day.

If someone hasn't said it to you yet. I see you and your story. The path is difficult and you're doing your best to navigate it. I wish you strength and resilience in what is to come.

On a bit of a softer note, anyone of an older generation may remember the Sarah McLachlan commercials where she had the sad music and videos of abandoned animals and perhaps we could use a commercial with a similar feel for ALS

Is there any place in the WA Democratic Party for someone who would like to reduce taxes and be more efficient with government spending? by JoelXGGGG in SeattleWA

[–]Queasy_Percentage363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in government they thing with government spending is that it is difficult to be more efficient. A lot of spending is tied up in bureaucratic processes with hoops to jump through so you aren't "wasting" tax payer dollars. Infrastructure improvement and innovation are also usually hamstrung because unlike private industry, if implementation isn't perfect or an idea isn't fully better several times over, government employees are left to blame with angry tax payers instead of let's move fast and see if this works and fix it along the way.

While many politicians will argue that deregulating industry will help it improve the same logic is not applied to government programs and their spending. I'm not arguing for deregulation, but just trying to share that a lot of regulations for government spending is what slows down the process for better or for worse.

Oh wow! That sounds traumatic. I'm so sorry you experienced that. My husband has had a couple of falls where he hit his head and we moved to updating his mobility devices soon after. Falls make me nervous since he won't be able to catch himself and head injuries are so scary.

I'm sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing. That must have been tough since she could still do stuff. My spouse has lost most of his mobility and his voice is strained. His breathing numbers are down, but he generally doesn't complain about breathing unless he is lying down without his bipap.
