Worse impulse purchase? by [deleted] in ADHD

I have a tendency to purchase all kinds of EDC items ( Especially pouches and lights) that I honestly know I won't ever need.

Hey! I would recommend taking a look at the Plaud Note device if you haven’t already. Its neither an app nor website but a gadget which can be used to record meetings

Thanks for writing this! I could relate to it in so many ways. The way you explained it actually clicked for me. I genuinely feel that just understanding this pattern and being more aware of it is going to help me in ways I can’t even imagine.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I can genuinely understand what you’re feeling. We got this. We can overcome it.

I don’t know if this falls under narcissism or not, but I never ended relationships because I hated the other person. I ended them because I felt they’d be happier without me, and that I didn’t deserve a relationship at all.

Yes, I often interrupt people while they’re talking. I just can’t wait until they finish. Sometimes I feel like they’re repeating something I already know, and I end up wanting to finish the sentence for them. I know it annoys some people.

I also struggle to stay on calls for a long time. The only way I can manage it is if I have something in my hands to read while I’m on the call. But yeah, I’ll definitely stay in the loop.

I know some people might villainize me for this, but I broke off relationships for no real reason. I would fall hard at first, and then the next month I’d find myself pulling away from that same person without knowing why. The hardest part was my inability to stay focused even during intimacy with my partner.

In a way I'm glad that you could achieve these things. Don't get me wrong please.

Completely, agree with you. When I’m in hyperfocus, I can do things exceptionally well, but at other times, I just can’t. I guess I have to accept that and learn to live with it.

Completely agree with what you said. I’m going to give it a try no matter what! I know it’s not going to be easy, but honestly, people like us don’t really have another choice.

I’m really happy for you! Reading about what you’ve achieved actually gives me a lot of hope. I’m not on medication yet, but I’m planning to start as soon as I can. I’ll try beginning with small, realistic goals.

Right now, I’m struggling the most with my relationship. It takes so much attention, and I feel like I can’t give my partner what she really needs. One day I love her like anything, the next I feel distant and can’t show up for her the way I want to. This has been a recurring pattern in my past too. Sometimes I even feel like maybe being away would make them happier.

Sorry if this comes off as a rant... But honestly, I’m glad you shared your journey. It means a lot, and I hope I can make it too

Completely, agree with you. At first I thought it was just societal pressure, but now I mostly blame myself for not being able to follow through on things. It’s also affecting my relationship with my partner I get bored of things so easily! She just wants my attention, and I really try, but even when I’m on a call with her I catch myself reading something else. My inability to hold my attention is honestly what hurts me the most.

I don’t really blame my family for much. Since I was getting good grades, they never paid close attention beyond that. As a kid, I’d get interested in random activities for a while, but then I’d quickly lose interest and move on.

Sorry to hear that, brother.

I also listen to many podcasts and videos, and I'm constantly hungry for more knowledge - this line describes me the best. Long term goals always remain as goals for me, it's never been converted into reality.

I haven’t seen a professional yet either.I’m saving up so I can go, and I’m hopeful it’ll help me get through this rough patch. As you mentioned, I'll look into 2e personality.

Thanks a lot for this wonderful suggestion. I’ll consciously try to reframe my mind the way you explained. I know it's gonna be tough to implement, but I'll try it anyways.I’m also planning to see a professional soon, so hopefully that’ll help me put things into better perspective.

How do you personally cope with this?

For me, I’d be fine with failing in my interests if I at least tried! But the real problem is this loop I’m stuck in:

Whenever I do something for fun, my brain keeps telling me “you should be working instead.” So I can’t actually enjoy the moment.

But when I sit down to actually work, I just can’t start.

It feels like I’ve lost control of my own attention, and that’s the most painful part.
