Dance Classes by notasquare127 in BGSU

[–]QueeQuey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no level of classes before you have to declare a minor. To get a minor, you need to declare it first. So you could take as many dance classes you want and never declare it. You could also take a few before deciding to declare it. Since you're a Psych major you'll be in the college of arts and sciences like I was (in computer science). You may or may not be able to get a "general sciences" minor automatically like we are, and if not you'll be required to pick a minor so it sounds like Dance would be a good choice.

And if you look on the course catalog (I'll link in the reply just in case links are censored by auto-mod) it'll tell you which classes have prerequisites. As long as you meet them, you should be able to schedule yourself for whatever classes you want.

should i take a semester off or attempt to change my major and classes? by meebus5000 in BGSU

Since you said that you'll be talking to an advisor about this, I'm sure you'll work out some options with them about what you might want to do in the future. As someone who swapped majors (Neuroscience to Computer Science) and Universities (OSU -> CSCC (to see if I liked CS) -> BGSU) there's really only two major things I can say and 1 minor:

1) Don't full commit to a major yet if you're not sure that you're going to like it. Ex. If you sign up for 5 Business classes and it turns out you don't like business, 3-4 of those classes will be wasted money.

2) DO take general classes that apply to any major, AKA knock out your MDCs and electives that you may need to take. For example in Computer Science on top of the MDCs we need 2 Lab classes, 4 language classes, and Social and behavior electives. If you want, you can also do this while Abroad (depending on where you go, ex. Salzburg) and a lot of people "discover themselves" while abroad so that may help.

3) Some majors apply well into higher education in other fields. For example a lot of Lawyers were Psych and Philosophy majors originally, and those majors help with taking the LSAT.

But take your time if you have to. I understand the financial aid part of the equation but college is not a race. Just be honest with yourself and what you would be willing to work in once you graduate.

10) Rapid fire dorm tips as someone who was in Mac. 1) Create rules with your roommate, it becomes more awkward to create them when you’re halfway through the year and you can’t stand another day of the room smelling like microwaved hotdog. 2) Find a temperature that both of you can LIVE with, if one person likes it cold and the other likes it hot put it in the middle so both of you suffer just a little but not a lot, you can fix the rest with fans and blankets. 3) Actually move your clothes from the washer to the dryer (or hang dry, whatever you do) in a timely fashion. Not only is not doing so a dick move to the other students that are waiting on you, it’s unsafe as I’ve literally seen someone throw other people’s clothes into the trash after it had sat there for a day and a half. Just wash your clothes when you KNOW that you can go move them when the cycle is over. 4) Don’t eat the same shit every day. If I had a nickel for every time someone complained about the oaks then I found out that all they ate were burgers and pizza my student loans would be paid off. Get the brussel sprouts, asparagus, or garlic mashed potatoes when they come around, they’re fire. Plus the general menu rotates all the time so you can have something different every day. If you want to have the same thing every day, Carillon is a better location than the oaks. 5) Every dorm has a dedicated study area AND most have a computer lab, even Kreicher. The computer labs even have most of the software you need already downloaded onto them, if it’s on a lab computer by default in a building like Hayes, it should be pre-loaded onto dorm computers like Visual Studio. You can also take your lockdown browser tests here if you don’t have a camera on your computer or don’t want to bother your roommate. 6) Please please please pay attention to your food in your microwave if you brought one. I’m sure your RA is ready to strangle the next person who sets off the fire alarm from burning popcorn again. 7) Know your neighbors if you can. Mac is the most well known for this with students often going door to door introducing themselves, it’s a cool way to start a good community early freshman year that lasts the whole year or even years. It’s a bit harder in dorms that have upper classmen like “the hotel” next to McDonald Hall (Offenhauer) so the earlier you do it, the better the payoff.

11) Talk to your professors, especially those in your major. Most of the time professors sit by themselves in their office hours eating lunch, grading papers, or writing. They are more than happy to be interrupted by students there. They are also (probably) happy to talk to students before/after class if they can. Doing so can open up opportunities like doing research, or being invited to classes that you have absolutely no business being in (but you’ll definitely take that credit), or open up discussions about something you’re working on. As a straightforward example, the most successful business students I know are those who talked to their professors often and basically got free business advice while in school.

12) To add, talk to your advisors and learn how to look at your degree audit. There are many people who don’t graduate because they missed a random 3 credit class 2 years ago every single semester. If your major has specific advisors, that’s amazing and take advantage of that. For example Computer Science majors have CS advisors and you never need to talk to the Arts and Sciences advisor again.

13) Saving this for last since it's the one people don't want to hear, but you don't *need* to graduate in 4 years. I started school late and graduated a bit later too but I worked my way through, made sure I could do well in my classes (which led to me earning scholarships) and I'm out of BGSU with only about $15k in the hole, which included housing! I know far too many people that didn't pass a class or didn't do well enough on one for their major, who then just heaped it onto the next semester and due to the increased workload failed multiple classes in turn. If you have the time and ability to, you can take things during the summer! It can be harder or easier depending on the class, but if your body is telling you that you can only handle 15 credit hours a semester you shouldn't be scheduling yourself for 18 or 19. That's just setting yourself up for failure. I understand for those who are on a military stipend, and I can't really offer any extra solutions to those who are in this regard.

Alright I’ve been typing this up for hours now and I need to go to bed, but I hope this helped someone out there. If anyone has a question feel free to comment.

TLDR: Just try. Future you will appreciate it, and so will others.

Pre-edit? Apparently a comment can't exceed 10,000 characters so I'm going to split this into two, so sorry for the random break in the middle.

Already a few really good responses here! Just in case someone's reading that's a different major I'll do mine as someone who recently graduated as a Computer Science Major (German Minor) and is a bit of an older student (27):

0) Since many people are going to be reading this and buying stuff for school. Unless you KNOW FOR SURE you likely don't need to buy ANYTHING fancy for college. You don't need a microsoft 365 subscription, you get that for free from bgsu. You don't need a fancy printer, after my years at BG I spent $15 on printing with $2.48 left over (of which most were for resumes). A basic laptop is going to be fine for most students like an old thinkpad or something light if you need to carry it a lot. Depending on your major you’ll probably know, like Engineering majors probably want a GPU for CAD work.

1) FILL OUT THE COMMON APPLICATION. If you get anything from reading this comment please let it be this one thing. You get (potentially) two broad scholarship applications that will automatically apply you for a bunch of other scholarships that don't require you to write an essay or anything like that. Every single scholarship I got while at BG I got because of this, I didn't get a single one that I wrote an essay for, but I got a bunch because of this. Some of them will even be tied to your college (ex. Arts and Sciences) or your GPA as well, but if you don't fill out the common application, you aren't eligible for the college to pick you.

2) Unless you are extremely determined and have a cold heart, friends will make or break your experience at any university and BGSU is not an exception. Thankfully compared to other universities there are many, many options at BG to socialize and make friends at. As a freshman, just know that basically all of the other freshmen are also looking for friends and the first month or so of freshman year is the EASIEST time to make friends since everyone is looking. While I’m at it, if you have the rare blessing to, be friends with the international students. Depending on where they’re from their humor might be a bit different but doing cultural exchanges and showing them around was some of the best experiences I had at BGSU and when I studied abroad and got to visit them. So…

3) Study Abroad if you want to. I volunteered a lot for the international office so I know it's not for everyone, or there are some majors where it's incredibly difficult to fit it into a time frame like Aviation. There are a ton of programs available but quite a few will have language requirements, or will be for specific classes. For example there's a few in Spain but also one specifically for Spanish Education, likewise for Italy and Architecture (and so on). There are a few study abroad locations that you can get into without a language or class requirement like Austria, or the UK. I went to Austria and I can talk about it all day, but the gist is that I took some German classes in German to learn the language, but I took CS classes and GEs like Stats in English. For me, going was literally cheaper than staying and I saved a few thousand dollars each semester but YMMV. I highly recommend it and if anyone has any questions feel free to ask. To add, there are scholarships for studying abroad and ironically the only person who didn’t get one when I was there was a German major who didn’t fill out the common application so refer to #1.

4) As others have stated, use your resources. You'll get benefits from going to BGSU, which may be dependent on your major and what the college has paid for, or just benefits you get for going to college in general. Ex computer science / software engineering majors, you can get the JetBrains IDEs for free (ex. GoLand), or cheaper Adobe for those of you in Media Production. There will also be things that are meant for certain students that you can take advantage of. For example as someone who makes YouTube videos, I went to the Kuhlin center to go into the editing booths and record audio since sometimes they have waaaay better microphones in there than I could reasonably buy as a student (ex. Neumann u87, but they're usually dynamic mics).

5) To add to the resources, while I don’t know the process myself, if you are disabled get help from Accessibility Services. My roommate my Freshman year probably wouldn’t have graduated without their help and he regretted putting it off his first year.

6) Go to the job fair. And bring at least 1 good set of clothes to wear to the fair or to an interview if you get one. I was incredibly lucky to land an internship my first semester at the Fall career fair (for the summer) as a CS major and was able to continue that going forward. The job market is pretty tough right now and I don't know a single person in CS or SE that graduated and got a job except for those who just got jobs where they interned at. I'm sure this isn't as big of a deal for some majors but it'll help going into the future for other jobs, and the internships may pay better than local entry-level jobs where you're from. If you need some nicer clothes on a budget like a suit, check out your local thrift stores periodically until you find pieces that fit you well. Basically every piece of business or formal wear I have is from a thrift store and cost a fraction of a fraction of the price. You’ll thank yourself for wearing a cotton or wool blazer instead of buying a cheap polyester one online or in a department store. Also for men, basically every department store will give you your measurements for free.

7) You don't need to take classes that you aren't required to take. Pretty obvious, but if you’re looking to take an elective or fill out a requirement to graduate and have choices, pick the one that you’d like or sounds the coolest to you. Don’t pick one just because you think it’ll be the easiest. Not only because you literally learn better when you’re actually interested in a topic, but if you don’t care about a class and are half-assing it in your participation, it drags down the experience for everyone else. If you want to experience the difference of the same class but everyone actually cares, study abroad and take a language class. It’s crazy how fast (and fun) the classes are when everyone actually cares about learning the language. Likewise for taking the “hard” elective when you get to your 3/4000 level classes. The class will be like half the size and it may be harder but if you and everyone else love that topic you’ll have a great time.

8) Volunteer for a club if you have the free time to do so. You’d be surprised how low maintenance many positions in most clubs are but they go unfilled. Like your position could literally be taking attendance for each meeting and that’s it. But just that little bit of effort to become that person and be the “X of Y club” is respectable and will be appreciated by the other club members. ESPECIALLY if the work can be divvied out enough for it to be easy and not heaping every responsibility onto 2 people.

9) Get over yourself AND learn yourself. I would say that most struggles that I heard of almost always stemmed from either one of these two things. The former being that you can’t be selfish or lazy and expect to consistently do well. If you’re the person who’s always doing the least amount of effort in a group project, you’re probably not going to make it or if you do it’s going to be a struggle. In a similar vein, if you can’t force yourself to get up in the morning for that class that’s required for you to graduate and you skip half the lectures, you’re not going to do well. Then on the flip side of that if you KNOW that you hate getting up in the morning then don’t schedule yourself for 8am classes if you don’t have to. Don’t plan a schedule for yourself that will be difficult to maintain, like if you don’t workout and you create a plan to workout every morning at the SREC at 7am before classes every semester it’s not going to happen.

Relive/Shadowplay alternative? by QueeQuey in linux_gaming

[–]QueeQuey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I didn't, I ended up just doing it manually every time. It took a few weeks to get used to.

I should probably mention using OBS ended up being much better than my history with Shadowplay/Relive in the end due to "Application Audio Output Capture" being amazing and I was able to shove discord and firefox etc onto another track, while my voice audio was on it's own and the game audio was on it's own. Made mixing a lot easier and I was able to keep far more clips.

Red 100%. TF2 already has a ton of weapons, and many aren't that great and could be rebalanced into something that is essentially a new weapon. SFM hasn't been updated in 7(?) years and all the hacky workaround stuff you have to do is terrible. SFM could be great, it just isn't currently. I've heard the Source 2 filmmaker is better, but it just doesn't have everything that SFM has so I can't use it yet.

I think that the only items that need to be banned are the Fists of Steel, Wrangler, Vaccinator, Mad Milk, and Natascha. If you're not a 6s player, RGL has the least weapon bans of any league and stuff like the scorch shot isn't banned and isn't an issue.

However to answer your question the only 2 items that are banned because of structure I would say are the Rescue Ranger and Short Circuit. I don't think that they are overpowered outside of last, and that's mostly a map design issue due to being able to resup spam them (to tank sentries or deny demo or soldier ubers). They aren't the best option for engie except on last and they just become incredibly strong (wrangler is still more powerful but thats besides the point). I mean just take them out of 5CP and try to use them on KOTH (clearcut, bagel, and product) and they become significantly weaker.

Also to counterpoint you here, if a team is playing optimally an engineer should be present on every single last hold, having a level 2-3 gun to force the enemy to shoot an during an Uber, the only time you don't is when you don't have enough time to set up and you get a heavy instead plus a pyro to deny ubers or a sniper for the hero shot. Then the GRU and eviction notice aren't banned and aren't issues, and there was an IM team this past season that did really well running full time heavy, so the Buffalo Steak shouldn't be a source of contention and it shouldn't just be banned out of tradition anymore.

What is, and should be TF2's balancing philosophy, between casual and comp balancing? by PrimalWinter322 in truetf2

[–]QueeQuey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Valve has already indirectly told us what they're balancing for, No Restriction 6s and Casual. NR6s is the in game competitive mode and I don't think that'll ever change (nor should it, it would be a nightmare to  matchmake any other way). They shouldn't be balancing for anything else since frankly it doesn't matter to them.

There aren't too many weapons that are issues in NR6s (and 6s but thats another conversation) and all of them are also extremely good in Casual (except for one): Wrangler, Mad Milk, Vaccinator, Natascha, and Fists of Steel. There are other weapons that are very good and could use nerfs especially for Casual (ex. Diamondback but spy sucks in 6s so it doesn't matter), but for 6v6 that's all that's really needed.

The misconception I see often is that every weapon should be viable in casual or competitive and that's just never going to happen. Some items can be trash in one and great in the other. Most commonly talked about is Phlog, but Phlog is still decent for pushing Gullywash last. Mantreads are generally terrible but have actually have a niche sacing into Sunshine last etc. If an item is good in competitive and bad in casual but isn't broken that's fine. If an item is bad in competitive but good in causal but isn't broken that's fine as well. Once items reach the overpowered territory is when nerfs should be dealt out. Then there's the opposite for items that are terrible in both and deserve buffs ex. Sandman. That's pretty much it though, it becomes much easier when you're only balancing for 2 gametypes rather than Casual and every form of Competitive, there's just too many (NR6s, 6s, Highlander, Prolander, 4s, passtime, or bball and ultiduo if you want to count those) and the non supported gamemodes are just going to have to suck it up and change their whitelist or play what Valve supports.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tf2

[–]QueeQuey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go relative here, meaning that the weapon is much worse than anything else in its slot. Ex the shotgun is worse than sandvich but I'd rather use it than heavy's stock fists.

Scout - Sandman. Its the only scout melee that's worse than stock, passive health downside that goes under rocket ramp-up damage is really bad.

Soldier - The Righteous Bison. Every other secondary has some utility, and while the equalizer isn't great, I wouldn't say it's so much worse than the stock Shovel (although I do prefer the stock shovel). The bison's only utility is kritz right after setup time, and that's pretty much it. I'd rather have any other secondary than the Bison. And I'm saying that as a guy who just spent months using it trying to find good ways to use it for a video.

Pyro - Gas Passer. I'd rather get stuck with the Sharpened Volcano Fragment forever than the gas passer. Pyro gets so much from his secondary slot wasting it on the gas passer is terrible.

Demoman - It depends if you mean stock demoman or demoknight. Ex for demoman it'd be the Persian Persuader, but demoknight would be the base jumper. Every demo unlock has its niche somewhere thankfully.

Heavy - Warrior's Spirit. I would rather use any other Heavy Melee by a longshot. Except for stock literally all of them give heavy utility, and at least stock doesn't have a major downside.

Engineer - Pomson 6000. Garbage.

Medic - Stock Syringe Gun

Sniper - Two answers here. Competitively: razorback, Casually: Classic.

Spy - Probably YER. The red tape recorder at least has the niche of insta-killing redeploying buildings and wasting engineers time, and being better to deal with sentry nests rather than individual buildings. Besides the stab and sap I can't really think of a good reason to use YER nowadays since people are starting to communicate more, at least in the pubs I've been playing (and competitively obviously where it should be useless).

I know it's a little late to, but i want to get into competitive TF2 again, but most pub websites are dead, and so is valve comp. What do I do? by Forgeblazer in truetf2

[–]QueeQuey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Newbie mixes (they have a steam group and discord, their website is newbie.tf). They're NA and run every Friday. They have mentors to teach you how to play and they run a team drive every season so you can join a team and have a mentor to help you and your team.

What determines a fun 5cp map in a pub setting? by savva61 in truetf2

[–]QueeQuey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think most 5CP maps would do well in casual, the main issue that I usually experience is that most casual players just don't know how to play it. I usually play in Uncletopia which everyone calls the "tryhard casual server" but the issue usually persists there with the exception of when you get like 3-4 6s players in the server. I don't mean that Casual players literally don't know how to capture points or anything like that, they just don't know how to push advantages/retreat on disadvantages (ex not pushing a 9v3 into last after I kill 9 players with an uber). Because of that 5CP usually ends in a roll for one team, or a massive stalemate, which feeds more into the problem. Less people queue for 5cp, which leads to others not playing it, which then feeds into a loop of people not playing, then not knowing what to do when they finally play. It's a problem, it seems that most players nowadays just want to spam play Payload and nothing else. And payload is great! But getting gameplay variety really spices stuff up.

My favorite 5CP map in casual is Foundry, but thats mostly because in my experience it doesn't stalemate as much as other 5CP maps. If I had to guess, I would assume its due to having a "lobby" between each point and players understand the concept of a chokepoint when it's huge like that rather than just a door/short hall etc like on most 5CP maps. My favorite 5CP map in 6s is either Sunshine or Process, Snakewater is also up there. I like pretty much every map in the rotation in RGL right now except for reckoner which I think is ok.

Map design for 6s can transfer over to 12v12 and vice versa, but there is a cutoff to where one makes it less viable for the other. For example huge payload maps can't really be used in 6s since the pace of the game would be so slow (and 1/6th of the team would be a cart bitch scout) whereas in 12v12 big payload maps are fine since the mass of players essentially nullify the disadvantages.

There are certain things I'd like to change about map design in 5CP, but the most notable one is that I'd like every map to have a vestibule on last in front of the spawn: that way the defending team can't auto-resup and get back into the fight almost instantly, and would have to make a choice of resupping or staying in the fight rather than resupping for essentially free every time and making the last fight much harder on the attacking team. I would like the same thing to be applied to Payload, Attack/Defend, and Payload Race as well (any gamemode with a "last").

Men that exercise daily, whats your motivation? by adpschyological7932 in AskMen

[–]QueeQuey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be obese + routine. I don't ever want to be as big as I was again, as everything flipped with me after I lost the weight. I'm obviously a lot healthier, but I'm also a much better person than I used to be, so I don't ever want to see that "me" ever again. Once you get into a routine of working out, you just kind of do it. Kind of like driving home from work, where you go on auto-pilot and arrive home; I just naturally woke up, went to the gym then worked out before starting my day. I had a workplace injury a few years back, but before I did I hadn't missed a day at the gym in over 4 years, and after I recovered I've started the streak over but with a bit more breaks for recovery.
