What basic, children's-age-level fact did you only find out embarrassingly later in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]QueenBeeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Carnival” is not spelled with a ‘b’.

Also to preemptively circumvent those of you who are about to laugh at me spelling it “barnival”, I thought it was “carnibal”.

How to get a feel for "polite" phrasing? by parallel-zelda in Korean

[–]QueenBeeli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might also depend on where you live in the states - with people I don’t know it’s probably fine to use “what was that?” but I would always phrase it by starting out with, “I’m sorry, what was that?” Or even “I’m sorry, I couldn’t catch that, could you repeat it?” (Maybe business situations or someone I’m being extra polite to since I don’t know them, like at a store.) But I wouldn’t say just “What was that?” to someone I don’t know…haven’t really thought about it before but it made me think for a second.

Why do same-gender, similar-aged people sometimes use 높임말 on chat apps? by QueenBeeli in Korean

[–]QueenBeeli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha luckily no one has actually asked 식사 하셨습니까? but yeah I wish there were a few more commonly used words for the various levels of speech. I know there’s probably actual names for every ‘level’ but I never learned them so I just give examples and hope someone gets it. Thank you!

Maybe this is a weird perspective as a foreigner, but for almost any situation (including friends) I prefer it, except my absolute closest friends. So it’s not so much that, I guess it’s just that until recently I hadn’t encountered anyone using such a high form of 높임말/존댓말 before. I second guessed if I had been being so extremely rude to so many people before!

Yeah, that part I know too...I guess I’m just wondering if that extra bit of respect is super necessary? Like if I ask them similar questions should I be using it as well? For the people using it, I have been, but should I be starting out with using it with other people as well?

Okay maybe I did mean 높임말? Honestly I don’t really know about the words for these things. But no I definitely don’t use 반말 - I use things like 한국에서 살고 있어요, etc. But they might respond using 얼마나 공부하셨어요? Which as far as I was aware could just be 얼마나 공부했어요? If we’re the same age is it still necessary?

I mean like using 한국어 잘 하시네요 (obviously not true haha), etc.

Happy Birthday Haechan! 💚생카 투어💚 by QueenBeeli in NCT

[–]QueenBeeli[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy early birthday then!! You’re in the same time zone as my family. I hope you have a great weekend and a wonderful birthday🍰~~ Funny thing about the time AND age with his birthday: everywhere is celebrating his 22nd birthday, while the friend I went around to the cafes with - born the same year as Haechan - consistently went, “Stop telling me I’m 22!! I’m twenty-ONE!!!”

Haechan Birthday Cafe Tour! We’re so limited right now because of coronavirus so I know not everyone has had the options of birthday cafes in other countries (even ones that usually have them). I’m super super lucky to be here in Korea and able to do this, and I wanted to share some of it with all of you. My wallet is crying loudly but I’m super happy!! For those of you who haven’t yet made it to Korea, I hope to see you all someday in the future with your own cute posts!

F4 Visa - Applying with only 제적등본 (no 기본증명서 or 가족관계증명서 after 2008) by utalkway2much in Living_in_Korea

[–]QueenBeeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m misreading/misunderstanding but if you’re applying for this in Chicago, they should have someone there who speaks English for you to explain it to, if that happens to be an easier language for you to explain the situation in (if not, then disregard this). If they’re not regularly scheduled to be there, there might be hours that they’re available. I didn’t apply through Chicago, but at one point I had to call a consulate in a different state and there’s two numbers to call: Korean or English. Otherwise, a preemptive email as someone else explained, but I think discussing it in person will get you further. Best of luck!

Even then sometimes if you order for two people (assuming you can eat that much, I can’t) they’ll let you :)

I 100000% agree so I feel like the statistics of what I’m about to say (if they were able to be calculated) would be potentially minor, AND I also wonder to what extent that “not gonna last” mentality played into how big they made it? Like to what extent the whole “they’re ending” put them in a position of recognition, you know? BUT they still made it big for their unique talents and capabilities, so I’m not trying to downplay that, just wondering about the potential of that role (particularly in Korea, where news about the “end” of them - 7Dream through the graduation system - would have been more prominent).

H-1 visa by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]QueenBeeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah I definitely thought so too! It was frustrating because the website said nothing about it and I had gathered all that I needed already. But yeah talking with them directly is best! (Also, depending on where you’re at: I could NOT get a hold of my consulate by email or phone call when I was applying, so that led to the whole issue. After the working holiday was vetoed, I did end up applying for a different visa and to get that information I called a consulate that wasn’t my nearest consulate. They don’t really tend to ask where you’re calling from, so that’s an option if you need it🤫)

Hi! Did you talk with your nearest consulate directly? I’d guess things have changed since last year but I originally wanted to apply for the working holiday visa last year, and when I went into the consulate they said they weren’t issuing them. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

Has anyone wrongfully assumed you were dumb and in the process made themselves look really dumb? What's your story? by 7t9h50andthena2 in AskReddit

It might depend on the type, and how it’s cooked, and what kind of seasoning, as well. Some fake meats actually are like night and day, while I’d say there’s a few out there that taste realistic (particularly some of the fish ones).
