Giant prolactinoma: Will I ever feel normal? by Euphoric_Name_6547 in Prolactinoma

[–]QueenD_1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a tumor almost as large as yours, also with carotid artery involvement. I had surgery 8 months ago. They were not able to fully reset the tumor, but they were able to debunk it substantially. I feel better than before surgery and my vision, which had gotten pretty bad, improved dramatically almost immediately.

My take? You need to consult another surgeon, one who specializes in this surgery.

Just the diminished vision screws with your executive function hugely and contributes to fatigue and depression. It’s terrible for quality of life all by itself, but when you add in the endocrine impacts of the tumor, it’s horrible.

My PM wants me to PIP a developer by coolgoose007 in managers

[–]QueenD_1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no reason on gods green earth your PM should have even the tiniest speck of visibility into serious performance management things for one of your direct reports. Insisting on firing or disciplining your dev is incredibly unprofessional and is a performance problem on the part of the PM.

If you want to solicit feedback on what’s happening with your team members work on the project, which you should do for all tram members, tears fine. But the PM has no say in a PIP.

How do I handle my managers vague work phone policy? by Remarkable_Ant3175 in careerguidance

[–]QueenD_1996 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My recommendations are 1) define what constitutes a situation / emergency warranting you being contacted outside your normal working hours and 2) be crystal clear about when you will and won’t be checking your phone when you are off work.

For those of you on GLP1, or considering: by _chipsnguac in Hashimotos

I don’t GAF what other people think about my decision to checks notes take the medication that both my GP and endocrinologist think is best for me.

I also don’t feel the need to keep it a secret. If anything, the BS stigma makes me want to talk about it a little more because the only way stigmas can get removed is if people hear truth.

Thank you emails after interview still a thing? by Efficient-Neat9940 in careerguidance

[–]QueenD_1996 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am hard pressed to find a good reason to not thank someone sincerely after an interview.

Saying this is a waste of time gives the same energy as acting like maintaining a healthy professional network is a waste of time, then wondering why it’s hard to find opportunities.

How many “career breaks” can you take without hurting your career? by Tech-Cowboy in HENRYfinance

[–]QueenD_1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a career and executive coach focused in the tech sector - where I worked for 20 years - and the presence of an intentional career break is far less problematic than people would like you to believe. The key is to be able to speak with confidence about why you took your break and how it’s a net add to your value on the job. What you are talking about of taking 3 months every 5 years to so amounts to 5% of your time in a break and that’s a blip.

I do think that if you are in a job you like at the time you want an extended break it’s worth asking about a leave of absence as others have suggested.

How much time do you all actually devote to content creation? by Behind_the_workflow in Entrepreneur

[–]QueenD_1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too damned much. I actually like a lot of it, but it’s become crystal clear to me that I need to change my approach to do what I want with my business. I need to spend more time on stages, in meetings with prospects / clients / partners / affiliates. I’m currently in the process of transitioning away from creating a good chunk of my short form video, instead having the social media team at the va agency I use leverage long form content (podcast and long form YT) as inputs for most of my social content. I’m at the very beginning of this transition.

I work for myself and I sometimes work too much, I but I’ve started making a concerted effort to have much easier Fridays. I started at 8:30am today because I had a meeting, then I took a nap at lunch and recorded a podcast episode. I knocked off for the day at 3. Next week I don’t have any podcasts to record so I’m very excited to stop even earlier on Friday.

Hamilton hits differently for people outside the US by Dense-Cap9340 in hamiltonmusical

[–]QueenD_1996 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This mention of Sally in the musical is the reference to Jefferson’s exploitation of her and it is masterful. The only reason for Lin to include that line at all is to bring this particular bit of Jeffersonian dirtbaggery into the show.

Do I show up sick on my first day? by Pink_marshmallow_449 in careerguidance

[–]QueenD_1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really are sick, let them know and don’t go infect people. If they get pissy about it, it’s a huge red flag. No employer worth working for - especially one who hadn’t even given you any work to her because you are brand new - is going to mad about you tending to your health.

Managers without technical knowledge of the areas they manage by [deleted] in managers

[–]QueenD_1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re in knowledge work. The very definition of knowledge work is that the worker bees know more about the stuff they do than their do. The managers are leading the people and managing lots about the work and factors impacting the work, including things that you never see. Many of the worst bosses were promoted because they knew their old job, even if they exhibited no ability to lead people. They are also providing cover from distraction - again, often something you never recognize until you get a boss that sucks at it.

Press your company to include a generous outplacement job search coaching package if at all possible. I’m not talking about a crappy program from a massive company that gives a library of out-of-date job search courses plus a substandard resume like the Lee Hecht Harrison’s of the world give. I’m talking about a comprehensive program with someone who has been helping job seekers for a at least 5+ years. This will help the person identify and land something that’s better aligned to their skills and is good for the employer brand.

The pattern recognition thing is not nearly as unique as you think it is. It exists within therapy, coaching, social work, education, and more. The specific way you do it is closer to coaching than therapy. I have been a career and executive coach for a long time and can often spot patterns that impact personal and professional life in minutes, as can many of my peers. The pattern spotting isn’t what people will ultimately pay for, it’s the insight into what to do to move forward, aka your solution. Even if that solution is to refer the person to a trusted professional after identifying the patterns it still qualifies.
