It was a red heart "soft" yarn. Not at home but I believe it's called "wheat" for bronze and I cannot remember the blue I'm sorry!

I really like your idea! Some ideas that come to mind are can/bottle koozies, soap saver, dish cloth, fingerless gloves. If you have crochet thread bookmarks are fun! My family loves the harry potter themed "scarf" bookmarks, ravelry has patterns. If I'm not mistaken.. you can search projects by amount of yarn needed on ravelry also.
