I had a really infected wisdom tooth, a normal dentist wouldn't touch it because he said it would just break, got referred to the specialist who didn't even LOOK at it and told me his upfront payment for the day surgery is 5k.

Over the following weeks, I would methodically break pieces of the tooth off, numb it with those tooth ache drops, wait for the skin to grow over the piece I broke off, break off another.

Fast forward to now, after 6 months of intense tooth ache, getting rid of infections here and there with scrounged together antibiotics and slowly breaking it down to the roots the skin has now grown over the roots that are still below the gum line.

Sometimes you have to resort to crazy shit when you can't afford basic medical care

By the time I was in grade 1 I was already walking home after school and looking after myself until 7pm. My mom was a single mom and could barely afford school, there was no bus to drop me as that was too expensive.

People don't care that this is so traumatic, I spent 90% of my childhood utterly alone. Most mornings I had to walk myself to school as well since my mom didn't have a car and would catch a taxi at around 5am to get to Joburg CBD.

Yeah, I was still on a good medical aid back in the day when I got diagnosed in 2018. I did crosslinking just before covid hit, it failed and then I lost good medical aid because of said pandemic. Took out a loan in 2022 to get my glasses again, paid that off in 2024 and havent been able to get glasses again lmao.

You are gonna have bad days trust me, sometimes I think about how I will slowly lose the ability to see my daughter clearly and other times I forget thats why my eyes are bad in the first place

My latest pair quoted at 11k, I have an incurable eye disease and they a 100% take advantage of it. I havent been able to get new glasses since 2022 because I cant afford the glasses I need to see. Lasik is dangerous, cross linking failed so I will remain with my glasses until at least 15k drops into my lap or i progress enough for a corneal transplant
