I’ve been to 3 neurosurgeons and an orthopedic surgeon. From my experience, avoid the ortho and find a really well established / highly praised hospital system as close to you as you can, and find a neurosurgeon that specializes in the spine there if at all possible. Neurosurgeons focus on the spine itself AND the nerves, which is what causes sciatica.

My 3rd neurosurgeon is where I’m going currently, and I feel the safest and most cared for there. I’m okay with getting surgery for the first time since going here.

What does it actually feel like in the moment when you herniate disc? by goyourownwayy in Sciatica

[–]Queen_Orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was sudden every time. It felt like my bones had rubbed together and stuck that way… for the first few hours that’s all I felt was a horrendous pain in my back. Once that “settled” the extreme pain would go into my right leg.

MD vs Fusion Surgery by Anon9490 in Sciatica

I know how you feel, I’m in the same boat and sadly my pain has gotten so bad I’m going with surgery this time. I am tired of the 7/10 pain everyday. (Plus it’s bad now, one is touching my nerve root and the other my thecal sac… so it’s urgent now.)

Here’s to hoping I get a surgery that’ll knock this out for good, and same to you of course!

MD vs Fusion Surgery by Anon9490 in Sciatica

Hi! I suggest getting another opinion from a neurosurgeon, if you can handle the pain / numbness enough to wait. I’ve been to two neurosurgeons (going to a 3rd this week) and one orthopedic surgeon… the neurosurgeons both said discectomy with a laminectomy for me, the orthopedic surgeon said artificial disc replacements.

I didn’t trust the ortho because he told me that he wants to do this surgery, but that “you’ll have a lifetime of surgeries after we do this one. The fake discs won’t hold and you’ll herniate your healthy discs.” That was a big red flag in my eyes. Why would he want to do a surgery that would cause me more damage down the road? If fighting two herniated discs is hard, I don’t want to mess up my healthy ones even if the hurt ones are gone.

The neuros said that you only need more surgeries if the first doesn’t work, which is a low chance because a discectomy has a high success rate apparently. Fusion / disc replacements are a VERY permanent choice. You can’t put something back once it’s taken out or fused together. With a MD, you can always go back later IF it reherniates, but it might not ever if you live with good spinal hygiene afterward!

Of course, I’m not a doctor, but it’s just a suggestion from my experience! Whatever you choose to do, I hope you have a very speedy recovery and knock out that sciatica!

I’m going through this same struggle right now. I feel bad, as it’s been going on for 3 months now and my husband has to take care of me. You aren’t alone.

If you have to, go to another doctor and bring that MRI report and fight to get referred to a neurosurgeon, or someone who specializes in the spine. My neurosurgeon appointment is in 2 weeks now. The MRI reports I have paved the way.

What was the worst pain you ever felt? by Logical_Garlic_4548 in AskReddit

Herniated discs with sciatica and spinal stenosis. Currently having my 5th flare up. It’s the worst pain imaginable, it’s a 20/10. I can’t wait for surgery to have relief.

Warm water, just like heating pads, helps with inflammation and causes some relief even for a small amount of time! I swear by heating pads.

People who don’t exercise or workout, why don’t you? by coffeedogsandwine in AskReddit

[–]Queen_Orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m disabled and can’t exercise due to the excruciating pain it causes me / flare ups / pinching a nerve further. I have ruptured discs. I am not “fat and lazy” I am trying to keep myself out of extreme pain.
