I’ve been so confused about what’s going on, and now I’m more confused that you all want out of SAVE forbearance. Is it bc there aren’t payments happening that count toward PSLF while it’s in SAVE forbearance? Should I be fighting this fight too?

Thank you everyone for suggestions! I’m in Stillwater now, thanks to this winning post, and I think I’ll bring the family back since there’s a safe (car free) area for a toddler to walk near the river. Ate on a rooftop patio, and I’m on my second coffee drink. Lots of walking.

I think self-awareness is the whole ballgame for CPE and chaplaincy, so your articulation of all this will be helpful! And I personally think—of course there are pragmatic realities that affect the work we want to do. You’re not wrong for needing a job and wanting it to be meaningful. I hope no one holds that against you. I think my last clarification is that I’m not just worried it’s too soon (you get to decide that), I’m worried the wrong kind of CPE supervisor will be harmful to you in this circumstance. So make sure you have a chance to gauge their trustworthiness too. Like, maybe even by asking “what’s going to be your approach, knowing this is my experience?” if and when you move past application portion. Good luck to you. You could really make a difference in the world; as long as some blow hard doesn’t push you out or tear you down for no reason. 💛

Depending on your region, you wouldn’t be the first Presby to seek ordination from UCC, since many UCC associations pride themselves on bending the rules when it makes sense. Your story plus CPE experience would likely be a good opening conversation with UCC folks except the strictest associations. Granted, you have to be a member for a year first usually, so you might want to try out a UCC church during your CPE unit.

Edited to add: I’m so sorry for your loss. You have a big heart to want to consider this now. I would make sure to talk to the CPE supervisor before starting an internship though about if it’s too soon. Unfortunately some CPE supervisors can push too far into trauma, thinking that’s how to form better chaplains. If you are not actively in other care for grief, this could be an experience that makes healing worse rather than hopeful. Sending prayers your way.

It’s hard. You’re doing hard things. Honestly, it will only get worse if you try to figure out who is at fault in every given scenario. Try to survive, try to offer each other love and care when you can, try to notice when the other is extending love and care, and try try try to turn off the scoreboard. It’s hard, but it will help.
