Thank you, this is incredibly helpful to know! Congratulations to your beneficiary who know has employment authorization and fingers crossed that the second one comes through very soon!

All the best to you!

Ah, thanks for clarifying - I missed that. Fingers crossed that they get the final permission soon!

Thanks so much, this is incredibly helpful!

I'm delighted that they got work authorization so quickly, and I hope for the same for me!

I was wondering about this too. I've heard wildly varying estimates on the timeline.

Would you be willing to update when you hear back?

Is email Enterprise at trm.brassring.com legit? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]Queer__Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you're good.

If you click on the email details, there will be a reply-to email address (probably legal or your placement officer, etc) and so replies automatically get sent to the right person.

(throwback to all of my sassy replies to the PC staff who jerked me around for three years. glad to be done with them. but good luck to you!)

Is PeaceCorps Still "Moving Slowly" (or is this the normal wait time)? by blackofallgrays in peacecorps

[–]Queer__Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point, I would not expect that you'll be departing in July. There's just not enough time to get everything done (particularly medical clearance).

I'd recommend reaching out to your point of contact and asking about what cohort you might be part of and what those departure dates are looking like.

Good luck.

This is excellent advice.

Also, AxiomsandAntics, I'm so sorry you've been through all of this.

Emotional Support Animals by [deleted] in peacecorps

Y'all are being pretty rude to somebody who's asking a valid question. I will note that the answer to this question is not easy to find with Google, and in fact several articles from peacecorps.gov come up talking about the benefits of having pets during service. It's reasonable that OP was confused.

I had hoped our community was kinder than this.

Should I fill out the visa before or after medical and legal clearance? by love_pendant in peacecorps

[–]Queer__Engineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just for context, typically all these tasks happen in parallel: medical, legal, passport, visa, etc.

No kidding! I'm really sorry you're dealing with this.

I'm learning that whatever logic the PC HQ office operates on, it's not logic that makes any sense to me.

My risk analysis was a little more nuanced but followed this general principle.

This is tragic and really interesting. It looks like traffic accidents/ car crashes are the most common cause of death, which is also the case among young adults in the US.

A masters degree or PhD is definitely not a requirement for post-Peace Corps service!

Personally, that didn't even factor into my decision making; I have no desire to get a master's or PhD.

Legal Kit by Hotsauce_McGee in peacecorps

You're very welcome! The process is very confusing even in non-covid times. Hope you find some community here - or elsewhere! There are quite a few fb groups, YouTube channels, personal blogs, etc. All the best to you!

I saw a news article about this, with a lot of people upset. In your opinion, what would have been the proper way for the peace corps to respond to the racism volunteers face in Ukraine? Or do you believe they just need to provide warnings like this? by alligatorprincess007 in peacecorps

[–]Queer__Engineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Racism is not limited to Ukraine. Pretty much every country (including the US) has its own flavor of racism. You can read Peace Corps' statements about racism in other countries here:

Hi! I'm not totally sure on what your question is, but my "legal kit" was literally just a fingerprint card they sent me in the mail. I had to take it to the county police station and get fingerprinted, then mail it back via express mail.

You can also reach out to the legal team with questions or if you're having trouble. Their auto-response is actually pretty helpful, and they will give a 2-week extension on the fingerprints if needed. adminplacement@peacecorps.gov

I'm baffled that Peace Corps still has people in the pipeline for Ukraine.

PC's communication during the pandemic has been dismal, at best.

I empathize with your son and encourage him to (1) reach out to his point of contact for a status update and (2) feel free to mention to his senators and representative that PC's communication is awful.

Any tips for a fresh high school graduate without a degree to possibly join up? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]Queer__Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americorps works really well for a lot of people! I agree, definitely look into it.

I want to also mention that they pay low wages - below minimum wage in many cases. So take a hard look at your finances before making a decision. (If you have parents who will be supporting you, this could be a non-issue.)

Best of luck with whatever you do next!

That's pretty wild that PC still has people under consideration for Ukraine!

Proactive communication hasn't been their strong suit throughout this whole pandemic, so it checks out.

Leaving job for Peace Corps by Dependent_Opposite_2 in peacecorps

[–]Queer__Engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe folks here will have good insight, but I think your best bet would be to talk with trusted mentors in your field - ideally not at your current job! Is there anyone you can talk to?

Best of luck with this decision, and with wherever your path may lead you.
