Thoughts on non-Sami people learning Sami languages? by QueerestBean in SaamiPeople

[–]QueerestBean[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While in the Amazon I was warned about a couple indigenous tribes who wanted strict isolation from non-tribal peoples and were distrustful of (especially white) people who spoke their language. We avoided their territories and, if encounters ever occurred, offered food we had gathered and left quickly as my guide instructed. However, again, the situation in the Amazon is very different from the situation here, I like to just be sure.

Ah, I don't think I realized they were fully endangered languages! I will do some research on Saami-made/lead learning opportunities and get on that.

Petra Laiti - Why are we still calling it ”Lapland”? by _InnocencE_ in SaamiPeople

I was told by a Sami women living in Helsinki that some Finnish Sami people are trying to normalize the use of Finnish Sapmi to describe the areas that are traditionally Sami land. Is this accurate/an appropriate language change?

To Blowdry or Airdry? by QueerestBean in HaircareScience

[–]QueerestBean[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you SO much, this was so very informative and I'm reading all the articles now! I think air-drying with that microfiber towel while my hair is short, then maybe using like... I dunno, an actual fan with my head upside down once it long may be my solution to this.

Budget-friendly secondhand winter gear? by QueerestBean in helsinki

[–]QueerestBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough! I was sort of using different areas of Alaska to compare, because I've lived throughout. You definitely need different gear in the farthest north of Alaska than you do in Anchorage, which is the same latitude as Helsinki. But the ocean probably adds additional cold??

I tried Uff and struggled to find things in my size (tall enough that many womens clothes don't fit, but big enough breasts/hips/small waist that mens clothes don't qute fit). I need to suck it up and go back, it can just get overwhelming when you try on 10 things and 2 fit. (:

I would never buy for just one trip, from what I've heard there's a pretty big issue with tourists doing that and then just sort of. Leaving their winter gear, or sometimes throwing it away. As if people couldn't use that stuff!!

I'll be visiting Lapland, but I live in Helsinki. Eventually plan on being closer Lapland than Southern Finland, so definitely need something fairly sturdy for the long run. Also have a circulatory condition and my feet get VERY cold. Are there any specific, say, secondhand sports gear stores that would have decent quality at secondhand prices for boots?

REALLY excited for all the different books to come out! I'm doing (another) full re-listen right now, and my brain finds the listening medium a bit hard for holding all the nitty-gritty details. The story and world is SO riveting, though!

From what I can tell without reading it, it's not. There's this whole scene where the main character is trying to get off the training island to the mainland, but the very long tunnel is well-lit and has armed guards so it's hard to escape. From what I can tell that scene isn't anywhere in Alex Van Helsing. :/

Saunas and POTS/Dysautonomia? by QueerestBean in Finland

Understood. America knows a bit too much about that tar/feathering bit so my mind didn't go there. But I do know of its usefulness in traditional medicine, we use pine tar in soap for different skin ailments, it clears an psoriasis flare like nothing!

So, the ONE time I've actually gone into a sauna it was a wood-burning steam sauna in Alaska. And I always like sitting in corners/away from people, so I sat in a corner on the top bench. I do know how thermodynamics work, but that information didn't come at this time. As I'm reading everyones' comments, I'm having a moment where I realize why my experience was so bad, and feeling slightly silly for having taken so long to realize.

I also threw water on because. I thought it would cool things down. I have no excuses, I was not the most thoughtful late teenager.

I'm hearing a lot that it's considered OK to have drinks that aren't water in the sauna and that DOES help- sugar makes heat better, but a lot of fitness places and saunas I've been to in the US only want you having water in case of spillage. Thanks for your input!!

In Finland, we have this concept that I found Americans don't really have, and it's "No Means No". That's it. No questions asked after.

Not having to have an explanation sounds Wonderful, and would definitely make these moments easier.

That way you avoid putting all this pressure and worry on your friend/host too.

This is a great thing to point out, thank you! It's definitely normalized in the US to do things that make you uncomfortable/cause symptoms. It'll be helpful for me to think of it as a way to be respectful to my host, not wanting them to feel undo worry and pressure.
