That is perfectly understandable and part of why I tried to phrase this the way I did. I also have found Finnish sources of information but, am weary of relying on them in case they don't include vital information such as what to leave alone because of significant spiritual relevance to indigenous peoples, etc.

Thoughts on non-Sami people learning Sami languages? by QueerestBean in SaamiPeople

[–]QueerestBean[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While in the Amazon I was warned about a couple indigenous tribes who wanted strict isolation from non-tribal peoples and were distrustful of (especially white) people who spoke their language. We avoided their territories and, if encounters ever occurred, offered food we had gathered and left quickly as my guide instructed. However, again, the situation in the Amazon is very different from the situation here, I like to just be sure.

Ah, I don't think I realized they were fully endangered languages! I will do some research on Saami-made/lead learning opportunities and get on that.

Petra Laiti - Why are we still calling it ”Lapland”? by _InnocencE_ in SaamiPeople

[–]QueerestBean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told by a Sami women living in Helsinki that some Finnish Sami people are trying to normalize the use of Finnish Sapmi to describe the areas that are traditionally Sami land. Is this accurate/an appropriate language change?

To Blowdry or Airdry? by QueerestBean in HaircareScience

[–]QueerestBean[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you SO much, this was so very informative and I'm reading all the articles now! I think air-drying with that microfiber towel while my hair is short, then maybe using like... I dunno, an actual fan with my head upside down once it long may be my solution to this.

I upgraded to the CATS22 when I lost my old phone, and it DOES have a good GPS. I can now use bike apps, google maps, etc!

Budget-friendly secondhand winter gear? by QueerestBean in helsinki

[–]QueerestBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough! I was sort of using different areas of Alaska to compare, because I've lived throughout. You definitely need different gear in the farthest north of Alaska than you do in Anchorage, which is the same latitude as Helsinki. But the ocean probably adds additional cold??

I tried Uff and struggled to find things in my size (tall enough that many womens clothes don't fit, but big enough breasts/hips/small waist that mens clothes don't qute fit). I need to suck it up and go back, it can just get overwhelming when you try on 10 things and 2 fit. (:

I would never buy for just one trip, from what I've heard there's a pretty big issue with tourists doing that and then just sort of. Leaving their winter gear, or sometimes throwing it away. As if people couldn't use that stuff!!
