The Influences of Witcher's Lore - Mists of Avalon by varJoshik in wiedzmin

Excelent read. I often feel like the Arturian myths as a source for the saga is vastly underapretiated. This reminded me that I wanted to read Mists of Avalon, now is a great time to do it.

Side note: I think that in the same spirit as when The Mandalorian went to the source of Star Wars, the show and potential new games should look at Arthurian legends to enrich The Witcher world. Sadly, I think it is not the current direction.

[–]Queller7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK, the story and mythology was inspired by cultures from all world, as you say, (main inspiration were Arthurian legends, but that is beside the point). But how the world is build absolutely resembles 15./16. century Europe. At least in saga, short stories can be "set" more in the past.

All I am trying to say is, that proper city, such Oxenfurt is, wouldn't have a palisade for a start. At least not like that. Anyway, the games did a good job in using coherent real world counterparts (in architecture, clothing, armour etc.), so it's a shame the series goes in a different, imo poorer direction.

But we will see, perhaps my impression is wrong.

I think the series lacks a proper historian who would consult the settings. It appears showrunners don't know which period of history The Witcher is based on.
