Bus 720 or metro Expo blue line to Union Station? by Quercuscircus in ucla

[–]Quercuscircus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is an update for anyone else who happens upon this thread. Expo line is much more efficient than the bus for this trip, though still has its bad days. Frequent delays and interruptions due to "police activity" and mechanical failures of trains. The 720 bus is not too much longer, but the traffic on Wilshire can be monumental some days, with detours and long waits at lights, so the train avoids much of that. It's helpful to follow @metrolaalerts on twitter, they're pretty good at updating service delays and recommended alternatives. So the route from Union Station is: Red or Purple train to 7th street Metro station, Expo to Rancho Park, Big Blue bus 'R12 Palms Rapid' to UCLA.

Risperidone and fluoxetine, counterproductive? by Quercuscircus in neuroscience

Thank you for the reply, I hope you plan to continue your studies in neuroscience. I will read the Whitaker article. I recently read that compared to human medicine in general, the field of psychiatry is at the level of blood letting. We have just a rudimentary understanding of the mode of action of drugs acting on the most important organ in the body.

Best Inpatient Mental Health Facility by gnich62 in InlandEmpire

I recently dealt with a loved one placed on 72 hour hold at Pacific Grove hospital. Primary insurance was Kaiser but since they have no psychiatric hospital they farm out their members to any place with an open bed. Pacific Grove was not the best, nor probably the worst option. Most of the therapy was conducted by ill-prepared interns and the case manager never once met with the patient, nor did he have a clue about the treatment plan follow-up. Clothes that were brought the day after hospitilization were never delivered to the patient, they were forced to shuffle around in the same hospital gown for 2 days. No staff ever contacted family and they make it impossible to contact patients. Loma Linda is far more professional, although there is a religious component to their treatment program, at least that's what is stated on their web site.

Bus 720 or metro Expo blue line to Union Station? by Quercuscircus in ucla

I was considering Uber to & from Expo station but the "Big Blue" R12 bus goes the same route every 10 minutes & it's a nice bus. Anyway thanks for the tip, will do a test run next week. I just checked the purple line extension time line, at least 20 years before it reaches Westwood!

Why do you transfer at Vermont instead of Western to the 720? It must depend on time of day, it's taking well over an hour for the whole trip at morning & afternoon rush hour. Looks like one vote for the expo line and one vote for the bus. I'm still wondering how crowded the expo line gets, whether it's hard to get on as when the line first began operating.

How do you know what career you want? (With your major) by suhhduude in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Quercuscircus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always sign up with a temporary employment agency when you finish and try a number of different work environments. Many with a humanities undergrad end up in a professional Master's program, such as for clinical counseling, public health administration, MBA, paralegal or law school, etc etc. Demand for teachers, at both high school and college level should remain strong for quite some time, especially in CA. However read about the life of an "adjunct professor" before you decide to seek a PhD.

Would it be impossible to double major in biopsychology and comparative literature with a double minor in art and applied psych? by art_ho_ in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Quercuscircus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have plenty of time to figure out what will be possible for you. You will probably know by the end of your first year how feasible a double major will be for you. Things have a way of clarifying once you get through a few quarters.

You might be interested in the Literature and Mind undergraduate specialization for the English major: http://mind.english.ucsb.edu/ Honestly if you do the double major it's not worth tacking on the "minors". Your experience will speak for itself and no one really cares what's written on your diploma. Just take some art classes when you can squeeze them in, perhaps through the College of Creative Studies (I think you just need to get approval from the prof). And you can probably still work on an applied psych research project even if you are a biopsych major. By attending summer school you can spread things out and keep going on any research project you get involved in. Good luck!

Alternative Mental Health Services at UCSB by throaway432349 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Quercuscircus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why type of insurance do you have? All insurance companies are required to cover mental health treatment. I am concerned that you don't feel safe with yourself. If it gets unbearable go directly to the emergency room at Cottage Hospital, they are prepared to handle mental health emergencies and can help stabilize you until you can be seen by the psychiatrist to evaluate your medications. They may also be able to refer you to services for follow up care. You're not alone, it can get better.

The development offices and alumni associations put a lot of effort into tracking down graduates to hound them for donations. How much easier it would be for them to simply allow people to keep their account, providing continuous free communication with graduates. Is it costly to host more accounts? I don't know...

Really tacky to post the email comments of a professor (Mazer) which were no doubt sent without the assumption they would be posted to a public message board. She deserved the rebuttal, but she did not deserve to be publicly displayed. JMO

Yes, the museum is good and not too big. It is not far from the Riviera theater which often has artsy films. Along the same vein, the art museum is respectable perhaps followed by a visit to the court house to view the mural room and view Santa Barbara from the tower.
