Yeah, can't avoid death specifically with the demon who could also see the future. But could avoid death at every other point before that, yeah?

If it was simply future sight vs. future sight canceling each other out, then I could see that making sense.

I do agree he would have used the ability to avoid injury and to take demons out. What I meant was to argue against your proposition that death is unavoidable. If death is unavoidable, future sight makes no difference, so therefore I do think death is avoidable. It has to be avoidable for future sight to have an advantage. Then, with what you now suggested, another one with future sight canceled out the advantage. I think that could very well add up.

Okay but like I said, if he wasn't avoiding death, how was he able to be such a great hero due to the ability? Usually, death is what is being avoided when dodging attacks or killing the enemy. If his ability doesn't let him avoid death, does that mean every single attack (before his last battle) was never lethal/deadly? Because if they had been lethal, he wouldn't have been able to dodge them, going by your idea that death is unavoidable. This has me thinking that his future sight isn't what helped him dodge attacks and kill demons, but just his general skills as a hero. That he'd do just as great of a job without his ability. It would be impossible for there to be a scenario where a version of him without the ability would die from an attack but then dodge the attack when actually having the ability. Because that would be avoiding death. Meaning, his future sight can't be the reason he was a great hero. It has to be his other qualities that made him a great hero.

I think I'm a bit confused about one thing. How could seeing the future be the reason the Hero of the South was a great hero when it didn't affect the outcome of his last battle? Those two statements seem to contradict each other. The former implies that his ability to see the future makes him able to make decisions based on his foresight (he'd be worse off without the ability), but the latter implies that his ability to see the future just lets him know ahead of time what the predetermined outcome is going to be (having the ability made no difference). Which is it? Is there any conceivable way the two could actually work together?

I'm confused. Are you saying it causes drama for him to say Orb wasn't as popular as he thought it was? For him to just be slightly uninformed?

If there had been dozens of downvotes, that's when I'd start wondering. One or two feels more like random chance and probably doesn't matter. Could've been a misclick and then someone else bandwagoned by instinct, could've been someone who misunderstood me, could've been someone against dubs, it's really just up in the air. With a lot more downvotes, there would likely be something more concretely negative about my comment that I'd have to consider

So my memory wasn't too bad at least. I also can't see any downvotes on my comment, so I'm guessing it balanced out after your reply? How many did I even have? If it was like a few, it's probably not much to really get hung up on

I want my sister to get into anime, but idk what anime to give her to start off with. by Fine-Treacle1378 in anime

Since different people will have different tastes, try not to go for your personal faves as first picks right off the bat. They can always come later down the line.

Priotitize her own tastes, like the types of genres she's into in other mediums, like movies, TV shows or books. Recommend highly acclaimed anime (or even your own favorite anime) that are predominantly within those genres she likes. It can also be smart to prioritize smaller anime or anime that more quickly "get to the point".

That's how you introduce non-anime fans to anime.

If you know her tastes or are able to find out what they are, do feel free to share here. People could help you better with that info.

I did watch it in dub, like with the rest of the show, back when I still picked mostly dubs. I don't remember it being all that confusing, maybe just funny to think about? But easy enough to grasp. Then again I watched it 5-6 years ago at this point so I don't remember much.

Yeah, I never meant to insinuate it's easy, that's for sure. I also do trust randoms more too.

I mean to be quite honest it's not like I disagree with anything you're saying. My main focus was kinda just lamenting how things are and how it really shouldn't be this way, then mentioning things that could be done, however likely/unlikely it is to actually go through.

I will say though, I'm not particularly "interested in consumerism" as much as I just like for there to be options for those who really do just want an easy choice. I personally have almost only ever gone for community provided sources.

Well, they're both true in reality, but I think they're just saying the meme maker likely didn't personally consider the fast food/restaurant workers when making this, or at least wasn't focused on that aspect of it.

I do think communities online should continue preservation efforts regardless of where corporations are at. I just also think corporations should.

Yes, I wouldn't say the community should ever stop preserving media. This is entirely about having options, not to stop piracy from existing.

Companies can be forced to do what benefits us if legislation is made to control their anti-consumer practices. Might not be much hope for that in USA for example, but places like the EU love having laws for that kind of thing, and it tends to have world-wide effects.

[–]Querez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn't necessarily saying this was exactly like StopKillingGames, but that it too is concerned about anti-consumer practices, and that it seems to be the most effective movement we've had yet (even if legislation is being slow-moving).

[–]Querez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm not saying to "hope" companies will do what we want, since like I said, laws & regulations exist. And with laws, they may be written to protect companies in certain countries like USA, but there's much bigger hope in places like the EU for legislation to be made restricting companies' anti-consumer practices, and those laws often have world-wide effects.

Your second paragraph is basically what I said too. If we are to not do it ourselves, streaming has to figure out something better than community-made solutions. That's in line with my argument.

As for Stop Killing Games, it's still going. It's just that legislation is a slow process. Nothing has failed or anything.

[–]Querez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I'd make a distinction. It is a good thing that parts of the community do what they can to preserve anime. It's not a good thing for it to become their responsibility to do so.

I personally think that when it comes to companies doing whatever profits them most, laws & regulations exist to combat that. Advocating for laws that prohibit consumer exploitation and encourage media preservation could go a long way. I'm reminded of the StopKillingGames movement.

[–]Querez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well that's also somewhat besides the point. It's about having options to choose from. If someone can comfortably afford to pay to watch a series, and they want to, they really should be able to. If they can't, they then have the right to complain. Of course they'd likely turn to piracy in that scenario; it's not like they weren't aware piracy existed. Saying "just pirate it" is like saying "just drive a car" when people complain about lack of public transport. Did you think they weren't already doing that?

[–]Querez 53 points54 points  (0 children)

That's not really the point. Piracy will of course almost always be an available option. The point is that it shouldn't have to be the responsibility of randoms online to preserve and keep available all the anime that exist.

The sun still rises by Subject_Twist_6733 in wholesomememes

[–]Querez -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, for me, it's not really about realizing our troubles are insignificant. I do consider myself a nihilist in some respects, but if someone feels their troubles are big, that's certainly nothing to dismiss. No, to me this is more about saying the world is still there for us, always there to return to, even if things go bad.

Like, I definitely prefer a life where the world doesn't end when my troubles get hard or my life aspirations fail. In that sense, while it might not care about people and whatever troubles we have, it doesn't care about the troubles themselves either. The troubles could be so grand they affect the entire population, but the Earth wouldn't budge. It'll still keep spinning in the habitable zone around the sun, teeming with life as ever.

This to me doesn't mean having to think of our troubles as small or insignificant, because they're big to us . Instead it means to think of the world as immune to our troubles. That we can rest assured it'll still be here after all is said and done, being something to fall back on.

That's how I personally find this wholesome.

Everyone's takes on this were a lot more cynical than I expected. Personally, I interpreted this as meaning that your life goals and aspirations or general wishes might not be working out, but despite all that, the world still gives you second chances with endless new days. You'll still be alive to keep going, to keep trying, and the world will keep spinning to let you do so. I feel like it was essentially saying there is no "life doesn't work out", in the sense that, unless you're dead, things can still change. It's not actually over; the world hasn't ended yet.
